Do you think the origins of the Fae people are as evil or good beings?

Raymond E Feist seems to think they lean towards the 'evil' and I am inclined to believe this as the modern versions of fairies are over styalised in my opinion but on closer inspection does make one think twice taking into account facial and body structure, expressions etc. What do you think?

I think the fae (or whatever you want to call them) are a different species and therefore have a different perspective, lifestyle, needs and anatomy etc. They don't necessarily have to be evil, just different. E.g. Wolves are just wolves and do wolf things. People think wolves are evil because the eat animals/livestock and have big teeth. (we are not going to mention Hollywood).

Also you can have "indifferent" fae, "helpful" fae, "good" fae and "bad" fae, just like human people.

PS. Feist was writing a book which he hoped people would buy. This required (this was the days before twilight) a decent plot and characters and characterization etc. I'm sure he wrote whatever he thought would work for the story, as opposed to what he actually things fairies would look like (assuming he thinks they exist)?

I think that the Fae are just creatures of the earth, neither good or evil, they just are what they are.......chaotic neutral maybe. They have their own agendas. They co-exist with humans and animals and interact when they have to. I just doubt that they would find us as interesting as most people seem to think; they would probably avoid us as much as possible.

The Faerie have lots of different backstories of one that has them as a conquered people living in hiding. As such, much of their storeis have to do with protecting yourself from them for various reasons. the idea being that when given a chance, they will attack a lone conquerer (person), so it make them look evil (tricksters). Part of the warnings is to leave the Faeries areas to them, So when you enter their realm, you pay the price. So you can think of it like going into a gang infested area that is "theirs". I think this is the area the Feist based his book on. He borrows much from the English version of the Faerie folklore. Great read.

I don't really think of them as good or evil. They exist outside of human mores, so you can't really assign human morality to them. Different writers describe them in different ways, but I like Holly's description, chaotic neutral. If you come at it from that perspective, any story you read about them will make sense and fit their mythology.
