Briar struggles with her need for privacy and help with the baby when she returns home with Rosie. Were her strong feelings of self sufficiency typical for a new mother or was she overcompensating?

I think because she was so self sufficient for so long, she really didn't know how to accept help when offered. I think most new mothers want to do things themselves.
