I agree with your comment wrt Jez. (view spoiler)[I also felt that her "motivation" to stay with the crew was a bit forced by the author. Yeah, eventually her role is so that Frey could learn to trust other people, but considering her skills and circumstances, she could easily have jumped ship at any time, except after they attacked the Ace of Skulls. Im at ch 17 and WOW, Frey is a dick.

Im up to Ch 23 and finding that the author’s chapters run by a specific formula. Im not good with writing “words”, but his last lines when the chapter is over are meant to be like a surprise! Mini-plot twist.

But instead of feeling surprised, Im just recognizing what he is trying to do. Bummed that Im not liking this more, but the further I read, the more I feel it is not the most original AND I dont feel much STEAmPUNK. Every time the talk about the airships, I just picture planes. Anyone else?

I finished. It's an entertaining read.

@Jess, it didn't feel very steampunk to me either. Nothing was steam powered, there wasn't a focus on technology and I never really got a sense of it being based on Victorian styles. Retro-futurism was my take. Pirates of the Carribean with airships.

It's a decent intro to the characters more than the world. I'm in for the next book. I figure there are enough friends that loved the series that it's worth a little more effort. I thought it was entertaining in parts but not amazing as a whole.

I am little over half way right now. It's pretty decent so far for me. I am not overly excited to get back to my kindle when I stop but it's ok. I usually love a book with a band of misfits so hoping the story grips me by the end. I thought the beginning was interesting but middle has gotten a little bland for me.

I finished my reread and I enjoyed it as much as the first time. This is a crew that shouldn't be likable and yet they somehow are. And Frey is definitely a character I should loathe and yet I don't. That's not to say that I don't sometimes smile when life knocks him hard on his ass, lol. (view spoiler)[ Like the ending...LOVE that Trinica steals the chest of ducats from him!
