ABANDONED. A book like the movie Contagion about a virus spreading across the world

I read a book, not a series, about 4 years ago about an archaeologist dig in Mexico,
I think, uncovering an ancient virus that is then spread through the US. They try to find how it is spreading and where it originated from. I cannot remember the name or author. I am getting old and forgetful but wanted to read this again. It was a good book. Thank you for your help.

The plot of this book sounds very similar but I don't remember the govt trying to get the virus to use as a weapon. I might have to read this and see. Thank you.
