Were you aware that Gavin St. James was Liam’s half brother before he was identified as such? Given his history with Colleen, Liam’s deceased wife, why do you think he actively pursued Mena when he knew Liam was interested in her?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments Jealousy that his half-brother (?) got all the good things he thought he should have been entitled to -- is my guess.

He seemed to have conflicting emotions when it came to his brother. He admired him for his leadership but questioned whether some of the things he’d done, or rumored to have done, in his life crossed moral lines. I wish I knew more about his relationship with Colleen.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments I didn't catch that Gavin was Liam's half-brother until it was reveled. Gavin knew that Liam had a nasty reputation and had not been a great husband to Colleen, Colleen's version, and he wanted to make sure that Mena had a option if she wanted it. I came to that conclusion toward the end of the book. When Gavin first appeared, it thought he was a jerk.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I agree, Charlene. I think it was mostly jealousy. He felt that Liam had everything.

I also didn’t suspect he was Liam’s brother until it was revealed.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1812 comments Yes, I figured out he was Liam's half-brother immediately. He was known as "Thorne" in the prologue and as soon as he said he lived at Inverthorne, I realized.

As to why he pursued Mena, it seems like something an annoying younger brother would do. He may also have been trying to protect Mena from Liam in his own way although he went about it the wrong way.

Much of the discord between the brothers seems to stem from guilt - Liam for marrying the woman is brother loved (albeit unknowingly) and Gavin for betraying Liam with Colleen.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments When Gaven was introduced into the story, I wondered what his relationship was to Liam. Was he just the neighbor or were they related? I wasn't surprised when we were told that they were half-brothers. I agree with Lauren. Pursuing Mena seemed like something a younger brother would do to annoy his older brother. I think he enjoyed annoying Liam.
