ABANDONED. 20th century novel about two parallel timelines coexisting simultaneously

I have been racking my brain for a long time now but I can’t remember the name of the book that I read in the summer of 1987. It was about two sets of characters from different time periods, different centuries in fact, coexisting in the same house simultaneously without coming into contact with each other. They just catch glimpses of each other sometimes and think it is their imagination. The idea was that past and present exist simultaneously in the universe but we are confined in our own experiences and bounded in our own timeline. I also remember that the house was a mansion and the 18th century characters were lords or something and used to wear powder in their hair. Can any one please help?
