This is a quick and delightful comedic take on a memoir by Mindy Kaling, the TV writer, actor and producer. After a slow-ish start, the meat of the book centres around Kaling’s time making ‘The Mindy Project’ for she was both the show-runner and lead actor. These parts were my favorite and did indeed make me laugh out loud at times. Towards the end of the book, Kaling gives advice to young women on confidence and also talks about body image. I was pleasantly surprised by her ability to write with such nuance on these topics, being at once wryly humorous, outrageously funny and extremely insightful. The only quibble I have is the chapter where Kaling’s address to Harvard Law School graduates is included; this section did not fit in with the rest of the essays and stood out clearly as padding to make the book longer. Overall, I’d recommend this book, especially to anyone who has seen one of her shows!
