One Hundred Years of Solitude
question
Are there any other authors out there who write as well as he does?

I discovered Gabriel Garcia Marquez fairly late in my life. I find I'm spellbound by this writing, and I've read most of his books. In my life, I have only rarely read authors for whom English was not their primary language. Growing up in the 50's and 60's in rural NY, it's the way life was. But now I'm wondering who else I have missed?? Any recommendations for an author who writes as well as Gabriel Garcia Marquez? I'm not looking for similar subject matter. I'm just looking for suggestions of authors who write that beautifully.
Hello Ginia,
I would highly recommend you to try "The Blue Mountain" and/or "Fontanelle" by the Israeli author Meir Shalev.
I have actually read almost all of Shalev's books before reading OHYS and didn't know that their writing styles are so similar.
I'm not sure about the translation quality, hope it won't be a problem.
P.S
Also, you could try "Esau" and "Two She-Bears". Great works by Meir Shalev.

You might like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, beautiful descriptive writing also
Try any book from Ivo Andric or Mesa Selimovic. All their books are "happening" in Balkan countries and are full of history, passion emotions and philosophy.
Some similar writers would be Elena Garro (Los Recuerdos del Porvenir), Juan Rulfo (Pedro Páramo), and the above mentioned Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist). Gabriel Garcia Marquez claimed that he was only inspired to write Cien años de soledad after reading Pedro Páramo. I still think Marquez might be a better writer than Rulfo, but Pedro Páramo is a much much shorter book than Cien años de soledad, so might as well give it a try. I would recommend Elena Garro, a unique writer among others in Latin America.
