They don't speak to each other. The grandfather has a strong relationship with the boy.

(view spoiler)[The father's brother (boy's uncle) went off to war after an argument with their dad(boy's grandfather) and was killed. The grandfather didn't go to the funeral or accept the body when it was shipped home. The boy's father never forgave his own father (boy's grandfather) and they didn't speak to each other. After the grandfather dies at the end of the book, the boy demands to know what happened and his parents tell him the story. (hide spoiler)]
