I decided to open a thread solely for NetGalley reviewers to let others know when one of our favourites might be up! I noticed posts advising were being missed, and put in different threads, so here we are!


Posted 21/1/20 - Letting you all know that Gulliver's Wife (love the cover!) by AA Lauren Chater (author of The Lace Weaver) is on NetGalley, as is A Conspiracy of Bones by Kathy Reichs (in the pipeline since 2018) both on S&S AU. I have them both!!

I finished one this morning that is still available for request - Amnesty by Award-winning Indian author Aravind Adiga. I really enjoyed it but am in a bit of a review slump at the moment so it might take me a couple of days to put something together.

Essentially, it’s set in Sydney and the whole story takes place over the course of one day. The MC is an illegal immigrant from Sri Lanka who has to wrestle his conscience to make a life-changing decision.

When I get accepted to read books my feedback ration takes a dive because they immediately count those books as ones I haven't given feedback on...

What do you do to get around this? Or what am I doing wrong?

Don't pay any attention to the ratio - and as Phrynne says, read them. It changes as you request and read, so it isn't really important (unless you have a VERY large number you haven't read!)

Em Jay Reads, I’m having to guess at the answer you’re expecting. Is it ‘I don’t know’?

I didn’t really have any ideas on how it should work but was surprised when books that aren’t published for a couple of months cause my % to drop when the publishers generally don’t want the reviews published until the couple of weeks before publishing.

Phrynne, I think I will take that advice and cut back on requests from NetGalley since it seems a bit harder to plan than I had thought originally. TBC I read them all (except for one non-netgalley dnf), I just thought I had until the weeks prior to publish date to do so and place my review.

You do have until the week prior M, or even a few days after. I don't read and review until a week or so prior to the publication date. I never look at the ratio either :) You'll be fine once you relax into it - they won't do anything (except possibly restrict your requests) but you don't have anything to worry about :)

Once you get a lot of reviews done - e.g. you've read and reviewed 50 then 100, the ratio would probably stabilize. Don't stress though :)

Because NG counts the books on your shelf as unread, it does take a while to get your ratio to sit over the required 80%.

For example, if you have read and reviewed 20 books you can only have up to 4 on your shelf waiting to be read (to stay at 80%). Once you have reviewed 50 you can have up to 10 on the shelf and so on. As Brenda said it will eventually stabilise.

So as Phrynne said, just read them and don't ask for too many at once and your feedback ratio will soon start to climb. (If you have trouble getting approvals initially review some 'Read Now' books to give your stats a boost).

Great insight re the numbers (which Brenda also touched on), Carolyn. It was something I hadn’t thought of at all and it matters because, by memory, I’ve only read half a dozen or perhaps just over.

So I will def keep going, but also keep a lid on it so as not to spiral. :P

I was curious as I haven't looked at my ratio for a very long time (that's how I found those new releases!) I'm at 96% so I'm pretty chuffed with that. But I also have reviewed well over 500 too...

You could always review on NG asap and review elsewhere closer/on the publication date. You can go in and add links to reviews at a later date.

Em_Jay I think that's more good advice for me to integrate. I've been planning my reading in relation to publication dates but that doesn't seem to work as well for Net Galley.

If you read Net Galley books early, can you do the review on their website but not publish your reviews on blogs and websites until the week or so prior to publication date?

Hehe, yeah. I think some books are muuuuch easier to get, too. I know when I first joined I didn't have much to show for myself but I still managed to get certain books from certain publishers.

In a way it's been good for me because I might not have tried some of those novels, lesser known stories and authors, but I've enjoyed some of them immensely.

Good luck! It definitely gets easier the more books you've read and in the meantime don't sweat if your feedback does plummet because you've just been approved for a heap of books - just enjoy the ride! As you've said you can discover some great books you wouldn't have tried otherwise.

Yes - a lot of people do that (review on NG and wait until a week before publication to post on GR). A lot of people post early of GR as well. I usually post in the month before publication unless asked otherwise by the publisher.

I review before the release date if I can - truth is a lot of times it is after.

A few publishers ask to not review until release date and I make a note of this so I don’t forget.

I have one now that is not a Netgalley book but is being released on 18th February and there is complete silence - no promotion at all until release day. All very secretive and such fun as there is a large group of authors all doing this - 13 books all being released on the same day!

My Netgalley percentage is 96% - they like you to be at least 80%
