Laura | 2892 comments All right, team. What do you think about a couple kissing on the cover as SUGAR on the cover?

message 402: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Yes that counts to me

message 403: by Chris (last edited Apr 12, 2020 06:50AM) (new)

Chris | 190 comments Right, let me try and get this straight. We can use any of the words in the recipe for any word either inside or on the cover of the book plus any ingredients on the cover or in the book? Is that right?

I don't get the STRAWBERRIES and THE part though.

message 404: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments That’s a spell out, Chris.

Also, cover colors will work. Any one have a lemon yellow cover?

message 405: by Chris (last edited Apr 12, 2020 07:04AM) (new)

Chris | 190 comments I have The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove (Pine Cove, #2) by Christopher Moore for green.

The Last Dog on Earth by Adrian J. Walker for lemon (not sure if it's lemony enough though)

SS-GB by Len Deighton for red.

Plus, I have Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling for No. 7 or blue.

Are any of those any good?

The Lust Lizard book works, for water on the cover (there are several mentions of water in the recipe).

There's not enough Yellow in The Last Dog to be 50%. :(

If you tell me which ones you want to read, I can check Amazon's Look Inside and find the words from the recipe in there. The recipe has lots of As & Thes & Ands, so we're good with anything!

message 407: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK, thank you. I’ll do The Lust Lizard then, please. Should be finished Wolf Hall tomorrow

message 408: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments So for lemon it just has to be lemon on the cover. Not to whole cover the color so I would think Chris yellow book works for lemon?

message 409: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chelsey wrote: "So for lemon it just has to be lemon on the cover. Not to whole cover the color so I would think Chris yellow book works for lemon?"

That's a good point. I was thinking that a color should still be 50%, but a lemon wouldn't necessarily cover 50% of a cover.

message 410: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Finished Wolf Hall. Do you want me to do Lizard or Dog?

message 411: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Lizard!

message 412: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK

message 413: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments So the story is supposed to be about us having a tea party with another team? Does it have to be the team that wrote the recipe we used? And if so, which team wrote it?

message 414: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Yes, it is supposed to be about our tea party with Innovation Jelly.

If it helps you, take a look at my up-next shelf. Any title on there you want to use I’m willing to read. I think there are between 40-50 titles, all next in series I’m enjoying.

message 415: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Strawberry red? Or maybe the rose works for the word Flowers?
What Happens in London (Bevelstoke, #2) by Julia Quinn

message 416: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments I think both Laura.

message 417: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments It’s got Flowers and Butterflies in the text!

message 418: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Hi team! Here's an update on our status heading into the weekend!

Regular Hands:

We had a crazy number of Reverses & 7s (12!). The Reverses are completed, and we only have three 7s left!

Color cards: Of the 15 cards (14 cards & 1 Wild Draw 4), 7 are completed. Of those not yet completed, most are already marked Currently Reading. Ones left:

Jackie - Full Dark House
Laura - Lover Unleashed (need to finish this tomorrow!)
Melissa - The Hunting Party (currently reading)
Eli - Flowers for Algernon (currently reading)
Chelsey - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (currently reading)
Jackie - The Spook's Mistake
Jennifer - Lying Next to Me (2 cards)

Of the 16 hands, we have 5 completed, and 6 more that only need 1 or 2 more cards filled.

For the mini-challenge:
All letters for the spell-out section have been filled. 7 of them are still to be read.
We have 1 more open spot for the cover/text items, and 4 additional still to be read.
Story - we're working on something in the captain's group, but we still need more titles for this!
I've read a book with the name ROSE in the title, and I need to read Lover Unleashed and Save the Date, we're playing something where Rose & her Lover send out Save the Date cards, but end up at a surprise Tea Party instead. :)

message 419: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Okay....I threw something together....

After returning home from our space trip we landed in London and checked our mail. We had a Save the Date card from our friend Rose and her Lover for their summer wedding at their Montana ranch. We decided to host a tea party at Wolf Hall to celebrate their marriage and make our new treats of Innovation Shooting Star Jelly. As we drove the Volkswagen Jetta up to the Dark House we noticed the fire had already been started to cook our treats. It was a wonderful party with music, dancing, and a magic show.

9 of the books have been completed, 2 are marked as currently reading and 4 are from Laura's TBR (Save the Date, Lover Unleashed, On the Way to the Wedding, and Light the Fire). The story is flexible and if a book can't be finished the story can be easily changed.

If we use this story we will need more books for the spell it and recipe sections of the challenge....two R's, a T and an E. And 6 new recipe words.

If this is acceptable let me know and I will update the spreadsheet.

message 420: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments That looks great on my end Jennifer. I’m almost done with the lover unleashed. And my current audio works for the E.

message 421: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Can you update the main spreadsheet in addition to the tracking spreadsheet? Last month I couldn’t figure out how to build the titles on the main spreadsheet, The way you did on the tracking spreadsheet.

message 422: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Ok...I've updated the spreadsheets. So now we need two R's and a T for the spell-it. And 6 recipe words.

Laura | 2892 comments Jennifer wrote: "Ok...I've updated the spreadsheets. So now we need two R's and a T for the spell-it. And 6 recipe words."

Looks like we're down to one more R and 5 cover/text items!

message 424: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments The last book I finished I think would work for Gold, silver, lemon, sugar, cup, tea, and flowers for the recipe.

message 425: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments Also I will finish the Dutch house by the end of the month and that has flowers on the cover..

message 427: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Going to read The Last Wish next. I think this will be my last book for the challenge! 😢

message 428: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "Finished The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove!"

I didn't even notice when you listed it before, but there's a character named Valerie! Now we only need one more 7!

message 429: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Me neither. Haha. Yes, there’s a Val/Valerie.

message 430: by Jennifer (last edited Apr 20, 2020 07:18PM) (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments I have a V one I'm going to be starting for a different challenge (V for Vendetta) but I just noticed it is tagged as a "graphic novel" and if I remember correctly graphic novels are not acceptable for this challenge. But I have the Audible version and it is 9h22m. I have another book that is 9h29m (The Stranger Within) and the pages are listed as 269. So do you think my V for Vendetta would be acceptable since I'm doing the audiobook and not an actual graphic novel?

message 431: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Jennifer, graphic novels are allowed, as long as you can find something online verifying that it is at least 25,000 words, or more than 3 hours of audio. So you’re good.

message 432: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Good deal! Thank you Laura!!

Laura | 2892 comments We're getting ready to head into the final weekend of the challenge, so I thought I would give us a final update!

Jackie - Full Dark House - completed
Melissa - The Hunting Party
Eli - Flowers For Algernon
Chelsey - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Jennifer - Lying Next to Me

Hands Completed - 10
We only need 9 books to finish all hands!

Mini-Challenge
Spell-out:
4 more books need to be completed

Cover/Text:
3 more books need to be completed

Story:
3 more books need to be completed

message 434: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments I will finish The Hunting Party by Sunday :)

message 435: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments I will definitely have all of my books done by the end of the month but hopefully in the next couple days.

Thanks for the update.

Eli messaged me last week, and she expects to have hers done by the end of the month.

Jackie | 338 comments I'll be done today or tomorrow.

message 438: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments An update for (almost) the end of the weekend!

3 hands left to complete, all just needing color cards. That's it for all of our cards/hands!

Cover/Text portion of mini-challenge is complete.

Story - 1 book left. I'm lacking motivation, and listening to other books, but I should have it done today. I need it for another challenge.

Spell-out - Need 3 more finished.

We're doing great! I've heard that quite a few teams have had their reading negatively impacted last month and this month, but we've done well! Everyone has been within a book or so of their estimates!

message 439: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I should be finished mine today!

message 440: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) I’ll finish my books by the end of the months :)

Chris | 190 comments Finished The Last Wish.

Seeing as it's the 26th now I'm not going to have time to read any more for this challenge but I just want to say I have thoroughly enjoyed it and have made one or two lovely friends along the way whom I hope will stay in touch.

Well done gang for completed the challenge and maybe I will see some or all of you next year!!

Laura | 1144 comments Hello Team Science Brioche! Greetings from Team Satellite Croissant. We chose your recipe, and all its science, for the mini-challenge this month! Here is the story of our tea party! We hope you enjoy it!!

Spring sunlight streamed through windows and delicious smells wafted through the kitchen as Team Satellite Croissant finished baking and putting the finishing touches on tea trays for their guests on Team Science Brioche. They were thankful that an early morning STORM FRONT had passed through, leaving a sparkling spring day in its wake.

Science Brioche had provided not only a recipe for an amazingly rich and buttery bread of their namesake, but a science lesson to boot! Who knew so much science was involved in baking bread? Team Satellite Croissant had learned the importance of kneading the dough, (But not too much! You don’t want to break the long strands of gluten proteins!) and letting the dough rest!

Carlie had graciously invited to host everyone at her waterfront home, and Team Satellite Croissant began to carry the tea trays down to the DOCK. Mary, Nikk, and Laura arranged the Brioche, BLUEBERRY PIE, DRAGONFRUIT, CHOCOLATES, MACADAMIA nuts, and HAZELNUTs on the beautifully set table, complete with silver cake plates of differing heights. Tefek carried two jugs of PINK LEMONADE to the waterside and joined them. As Tina, Vanessa, and Carlie set up the tea, all remarked how today’s unseasonably warm weather could have felt like AUGUST HEAT anywhere else, but the cool bay breezes made the dock the perfect setting for their tea party.

Team members from Science Brioche began to arrive. Laura, Chelsey, and Jennifer arrived first, commenting on how many of the women wore their up in FRENCH TWISTs, it seemed to be the hairstyle of the day to help beat the heat! Laughter and introductions continued as Tatiana’s boat cruised through water. Chris, Eli, Jackie, Melissa, and Savir all appeared on the bow waving their greetings to the rest of the group. Once the boat had docked and was tied up, the teams began their lovely tea party remarking on the TWISTED FATE that had brought them all together. They discussed books all afternoon, their current reads as well as old favorites. They found they had much in common and passed the time easily. As cocktails began to be introduced, the afternoon stretched out, and a few of the group even swore they saw MERMAIDS playfully swimming in the water.

The sun began to set, and the night sky and her beautiful display took over. The teams could see the jewels of STARs, constellations, and a gorgeously, almost full moon. They took turns pointing out their favorites like Cassiopeia, Pegasus, and the nearby ANDROMEDA. As the hour grew late, the teams began their goodbyes, and wished each other another year of health and good reading. It was a party they would ALWAYS remember.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Tea Time Story - from Galactic Crème Brûlée for Science Brioche

This month, Team Galactic Crème Brûlée have not actually participated in a quest but they have been told the most marvellous story at an afternoon tea the team had been attending.

Wanting to share this story, we have decided to try out a new recipe for tea time snacks, created by Team Science Brioche, and we therefore invite all the members of Team Science Brioche to attend our lovely afternoon tea so that we can tell you this wonderful story.

While the Duke was sleeping, the Duchess - a good friend of the team and the one who told us this story - decided she was no longer tired and certainly not up or lying in bed doing nothing. She therefore decided to venture out into their very large gardens, despite their sometimes somewhat threatening shadows in her eyes, to go for a bit of a stroll. And maybe a little adventure, who knows?

What she did not know however was that her wish was going to come true because on this very night, their gardens had become the grounds of an incredible test of wills. Or was that more a ridiculous feat of strength?

Several people were gathered in what seemed to be an area cleared of benches and potted plants to create free space to conduct nothing less than a duel! Now, the Duchess was usually a very dignified person but she was now intrigued and wondered what kind of rich people problems these guys all had - because they had to be rich, judging from that clothes they wore.

Edging closer, she unobtrusively settled herself on one of the benches the nightly visitors had considerately moved into her path, and began to observe the proceedings. Their words weren't very clear but when one of them suddenly started shouting and the Duchess heard something along the lines of: "If I had your face, I would exile myself so as not to subject others to it!" she figured it just had to be a dramatic development between suitors - probably of one of the lovely young women standing on the sidelines, oohing and gasping when appropriate.

It brought back memories of her own, of times before her engagement to her husband, the Duke. It had not always been smooth sailing. Rather, his courting had more resembled chaos than anything else but it had made him extremely endearing to her, even if her mother had certainly not thought so. There was this one memory in particular when they had been unchaperoned and.... well this is not the time for such stories and in all honesty, it was a story she had never told anyone. It was too precious and certainly not one for afternoon tea... There would be far too much gasping and clutching of pearls involved if she did.

All the while the drama in the garden had been unfolding and her heart was beating fast by the time the men were done hurling insults and were actually proceeding to do the deed. They drew pistols from their waistbands.

And just as it was about to get interesting, the Duke stepped onto the lawn. Everyone froze as he looked them over and then turned his head to raise an eyebrow at the Duchess who was merely shrugging and grinning at him.

"What a coincidence..." he muttered though there was an amused glint in his eye. Turning to the uninvited guests, he sighed: "What did you think this was going to achieve? Have you any idea of the consequences this would ensue? The potential casualties?" Shaking his head at the sheepish looking young men who were putting away their pistols much to the relief of their female companions, he told them to go home.

"So it wasn't a lover's splat or a suitor trying to take out the other?" the Duchess asked her husband as they supervised the young men putting everything back into place before disappearing out of their vast gardens with their retinue.
"You read too many romance novels," he accused her with a laugh.
