LOL! I'll ask in the captain's group. If the answer is no, we'll probably need a yellow cover or a star shape on the cover. Unless someone finds the word in their book!

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Yeah i I don't know how lenient they are letting us be with the mini challenge..starfruit is the hardest one imo.

Chris | 190 comments Carambola
Carambola, also known as starfruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The fruit is popular throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and parts of East Asia. The tree is also cultivated throughout non-indigenous tropical areas, such as in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the southern United States. The fruit has distinctive ridges running down its sides; in cross-section, it resembles a star, hence its name. The entire fruit is edible and is usually eaten out of hand. They may also be used in cooking, and can be made into relishes, preserves, and juice drinks.

I don't know if any of that will help, if they don't accept it.

By the by, I've finished JODTAA and on to The Sisters Brothers.

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Maybe scope out other boards and see what any of them are filling it with.

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Ok team, after much research I have found a 7 hour audiobook with the word starfruit in the text. The Cat's Table according to google should have it in the text. I have downloaded it from the library and since I listen on 1.75 to 2x speed depending on the narrator will knock it. Hopefully it isn't terrible :)

Good luck. The reviews on that one are all over the place. :)

Laura | 2892 comments Okay, team! Uno Pixie liked the idea of Pi in our recipe, but wants to see some more Science involved. So we need to creatively throw some elements in there. Any ideas?

message 158: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments So I don't bake and am not very creative. I don't think I'm much help on this one but I'll think on it.

message 159: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Right, so we know Brioche is French and it has eggs, salt, sugar, plain flour, caster sugar, butter, milk (warm) and yeast in it. It is actually a bread and not a pie but if they accept that we’ll go for that. Obviously, those ingredients are British. I don’t know what the equivalents, like caster sugar, are in the States but I’m sure you can figure it out.

What sort of thing are they looking for and I’ll have a think about it?

message 160: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments Such as using the chemical notation for salt, NaCl?

message 161: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK. How about NaCl + 3.14 (Pi) = Brioche?

message 162: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments Hey team!
If bringing the equation into it doesn't work. I found a different recipe that also talks about the science behind making a good bread. The bread is baked in a circle dish so our Pi. This recipe also calls for salt so the chemical notation. Then the way the balls of dough are arranged could be like molecular bonding? cell division? maybe someone see's another science link.

Laura | 2892 comments Great ideas, you guys! I’m out all day. We’re having a make-up birthday party for my daughter who turned 12 while we were in the hotel. But I’ll pull all your ideas together and message Uno Pixie this evening!

Congrats on your recipe!

Great work. 30 points has been added to your spreadsheet!

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments YAY !!!!

message 166: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Yeehaw! Thank you.

What did we put in for the formula? 😂

message 167: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I actually copied large parts of what Melissa posted. It goes in depth on the science involved in bread baking.

message 168: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Nice! That’s another 30 points in the bag!

message 169: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments Great job!

message 170: by Laura (last edited Feb 18, 2020 12:36AM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I found Kiwi! It's not Kiwifruit, but since in the United States we just call it Kiwi, as opposed to Starfruit or Passionfruit which would use the whole thing, it should work.

The funny thing is, in the next sentence the book also has the word star fruit! :)

So it looks like we have found books for all the tasks in the mini challenge. Now we just have to read them! :)

message 171: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Haha! How ironic and typical. We also just call it Kiwi.

message 172: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Can you believe we're about 2/3 of the way through the month? It has just flown by!

Here's a little update for us:

We've completed 8 hands! We only need 15 more books to complete all our hands!

We've completed just over 1/2 of the mini-challenge tasks, with all remaining tasks claimed!

We are currently in 5th place, only 40 points behind 3rd place!

For the color cards:
Red 9 - Eli
✔ Yellow 6 - Chelsea
✔ Yellow 2 - Jennifer
Green 7 - Egle
✔ Green 0 - Melissa
Blue 2 - Tatiana
✔ Blue 1 - Chelsey

If you think you might not finish your color card book before the end of the month, please speak up now, while we have time to find something else!

Great! And I heard from Eli. She has about 50 pages left in her book. I've got a Green 7 being shipped to my library for me right now just in case we need it.

message 175: by Laura (last edited Feb 20, 2020 01:25PM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments After much debate in the Captain's Group, Uno Pixie stepped in and posted this picture of Cornflour:

She also said that the White could be stretched to beige to account for some countries having more starch than flour in the product.

So my yellow book doesn't work. I have Protecting What's Mine by Lucy Score already checked out from Kindle Unlimited. Does it look like it works for white/beige?

message 176: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments It looks like white/beige to me, Laura.

I'm a bit behind with my book at the minute, I'm afraid. I've had more drama than an episode of Dallas so trying to catch up a bit. Sorry.

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Ugh! 2020 has been that way for me too! Normally my life is very calm but this year has been the exact opposite!

message 179: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Hey Team! Great job for the month, we have finished the main challenge except for one color card that Laura is working on. If you signed up for mini challenge books we have a few days left to get those and shoot for the completion bonus. We are in fourth place but very close to third.

Way to go team! I should have mine for the Green 7 completed today!

message 181: by Laura (last edited Feb 24, 2020 11:36AM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Just a quick check on your books for the mini-challenge. The following are still being read:

Moon - The Sister's Brothers - Chris (substitute available)
Orange - I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Tatiana (substitute available)
Pen - Pride & Prejudice - Chelsey (substitute available)

If you think you might not finish in time, speak up! We have several completed books that have not been used in the mini challenge, and we may be able to cover a few of these if needed! :)

message 182: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments If needed Cilka's Journey has "pen" in the text.

message 183: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Laura, I finished One Damned Thing After Another about 8 days ago. I did say. Have probably another three days before I finish The Sisters Brothers.

I missed that, sorry. I saw when you said you were almost done, but then forgot to check your shelves. I was depending too much on the spreadsheet. :)

If you don't get The Sisters Brothers done, there's a moon on the one I'm reading for the Green 7.

message 191: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Yes, I will be finished.

message 192: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) Do I have to finish all the books by the end of the month? Or can I start on a book in February and finish it in March (and still get points)?

message 193: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Eli wrote: "Do I have to finish all the books by the end of the month? Or can I start on a book in February and finish it in March (and still get points)?"

As long as it was started after the first of February, we can count your book in the month you finish it. So anything you start now can be counted in our March hands.

message 194: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I finished the Green 7, so our Uno hands are completed for the month! New hands should go up in the next few days. Here's hoping for fewer Draw 2s, since we've shown we can read more books (we've got enough extra for at least one more hand!) Those pesky Draw 2s, while convenient, cause us to lose out on potential points.

message 195: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments It looks like we need a new book for 24, because 224 pages doesn’t work. That one has to be 24th in series or published on the 24th of a month.

If no one else has anything, I can read one tomorrow that fits in with my other challenges.

message 196: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments I've got a short one published on the 24th. I should be able to fit it in over the next couple of days.

message 197: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Oh well that sucks. I misunderstood the rule on page numbers! Glad we got some. I'm gonna finish pride and prejudice tonight and tomorrow but feel free to plug in the substitute so the points are already on our board.. i have a few books in progress that i should finish in the first few days of march. One is The Illness Lesson by Clare Beams I think its over 50 percent blue but i know some others like this have been close. If we draw a blue card that fits it would be done early.

message 198: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Jackie, if you want to go ahead. But mine fits a Zombie Short Order cook task, so I’ll be reading it anyway.

message 199: by Jackie (new)

We're waiting on a few others, so I'll leave yours. Unless Chris & I finish and I get super antsy! :)
