On a library display for “2020: Year of the Nurse and Midwife” I picked this up because I thought it was a new series from an author I enjoyed. That author of British period mysteries was Charles Finch, not Charles Todd. I imagine there’s a few more Chlarleses writing in the same genre as well:) This one is fairly typical, nothing special but not objectively bad. Good on a cold winter afternoon with some cups of tea.

Bess Crawford grew up in India, daughter of a colonel, so at the start of WWI she volunteered with the nursing corps near the front lines. One patient, Arthur Graham, was a favorite. As he lay dying he asks Beth to deliver an urgent but cryptic message to his brother. Months later, when Beth inures her arm and is sent home to recuperate, she decides it’s time to deliver the message. Upon meeting the Graham family Beth is unsure whether Arthur’s wishes will be carried out. Beth begins to investigate what Arthur may have been trying to say, and through her medical skills, is caught up in some other local mysteries.
