Scary hero but gentle to heroine

PLOT: Hero is scary to others e.g 'monster' mafia criminal etc but is very gentle with heroine. Bonus points if heroine has experienced abuse.

An example would be Twisted Emotions

I'd also like the book to be a stand alone or the first in a series.
