If we all had the exact same taste in books, there would be nothing to talk about.

I agree with your thoughts about the good parts of the book. Don’t forget about the Alone in the Wild BR. That should be a good read. I have the book now. Just waiting for you to tell me you have the book.

Laura | 9707 comments When I checked yesterday it was still on order. I'm first in queue.

Stacey | 897 comments Yeah, I'm done!

Ok, I really hated that they found Matt alive. I felt like this was so far fetched. After that point though, I like it so much more. The last chapters were crazy and out there but more interesting and believable, assuming that the family ended up together after Matt's ordeal. It was definitely a slow beginning and Yasmin's crazy was too much but the end was somewhat redeeming.

Ok, your thoughts....

Jenny | 8054 comments I was reminded of a 6th grade writing class I had. We had a Nancy Drew / Agatha Christie Mysteries unit, in which we learned of the way a lot of mystery and suspense books are plotted and written. The Nancy Drew portion dealt in the art of coincidence, and how far-fetched some events are in a mystery book. (I still have the story we had to write from that class in a closet somewhere. My hero was named Eddie Summers, and the baddie was Prudence Skaglop. Of course.)

There was almost nothing believable about the circumstances in this book. The fact that Yasmin had no problems driving that truck, and that they found Matt at all. The fact that the CEO of the fracking company drove a big rig. The fact that Yasmin took her child with her, etc. etc.

I did like Ruby, and I also liked some of the science and the back story of how the couple met and fell in love. Other than that...meh.

Stacey | 897 comments Yes and no problems with a Brit driving an American rig, which has to be a bigger deal then just driving the truck in Alaska.

I do want to thank you guys for helping me read it! I need to set aside more time for reading and hopefully this was a start.

Laura | 9707 comments My thoughts are under spoiler tags on the previous page.

Jenny- tomorrow I can pick up The Other People by C.J. Tudor When We Were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald & Light from Other Stars by Erika Swyler . Fancy reading any of them soon? Monday start, perhaps on one of them?

I wouldn't have gotten through this book without the buddy read. I would have abandoned it even though it was badly needed for a challenge. Thanks!

How about The Other People? Although, I have all three, so I am ok with any of them. Monday would be fine.

Laura | 9707 comments Stacey, do you want to read it with us? ( Geri, I see you already it) If Stacey wants to read it with us then I don't mind waiting until she gets her copy otherwise Monday works for me.

Geri Yes, I just read The Other People. It was better than this book. I won’t say more so I don’t give any spoilers away. I’ll see you on the Alone in the Wild thread.

Stacey | 897 comments I would love to read it but I'm not sure about timing. Go ahead and start Monday either way. I won't be able to get a print copy in time and I need to finish 2 audio books first.

Stacey | 897 comments Geri and Laura, Alone in the Wild is the 5th in a series. Does it read as stand alone or should I have read the other 4 first? It sounds like something I'd like but I usually start with a first.

Rockton is a great series. To really enjoy it, you probably do need to start at the beginning.

Oh, definitely read the other books first. It's a tangled, complicated weave that makes more sense read in order. Definitely a series worth reading. Kelley Armstrong is one of my favorite authors. Her writing has definitely improved and matured over the years.

Laura | 9707 comments Shall I ask /make us a thread for The Other People for Monday?

Jenny | 8054 comments Laura wrote: "Shall I ask /make us a thread for The Other People for Monday?"

Yes please.

Laura | 9707 comments Hi ladies,
How is everyone?
my copy of The Grace Year finally came in. When can everyone start?

Jenny | 8054 comments Hello!
I can start whenever you like. I have the book just sitting on a pile of other books that I haven't read yet. I think they are all talking to me in my sleep...

"read me...read me now...do it...read me..."

Does that happen to. you too?

Laura | 9707 comments Lol, yes! I think we may both have a problem.:-)
Okay, let's wait and see if Stacey wants to join us ( Geri too if she'd like) and then go from there.
How was Starless Sea?

Jenny | 8054 comments Don't bother. It was so disappointing. A story in search of a plot and better writing.

Stacey | 897 comments I can start whenever you want.

Jenny, right now I think some of my books have given up.

Laura | 9707 comments That is disappointing about The Starless Sea. Do we want to start right away or wait until Monday? (or another day that works better?)

Jenny | 8054 comments Should we ask for a thread in case anyone else wants to join? If so, it may take a day or so for the mods to set one up.

Stacey, just give the despondent books a little pat, perhaps read a flyleaf or two- they will feel better. teehee

Laura | 9707 comments Sure, that sounds good.

What's everyone reading right now? I 'm reading American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins and starting The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor today.

Jenny | 8054 comments Ohh, I just got a personal recommendation for American Dirt. Let me know what you think please. I think the hoopla about it was ridiculous.

I am finishing up Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey and Journey's Edge (Infinity's End #4) by Eric Warren , and about to start the new Aloysius Pendergast book.. Crooked River (Pendergast, #19) by Douglas Preston .

Stacey | 897 comments I just finished rereading In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1) by Tana French and am listening to The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor .

Stacey, what did you think of In the Woods? Matthew and I are buddy reading The Chalk Man if you want to join us.

Jenny | 8054 comments Unspeakable things is good. It is the kind of book that looms. There are a bunch of things that are vaguely sinister, out of the corner of your eye creepy, and not explained yet. My guess is the end will be interesting.

Laura | 9707 comments Sometimes I like creepy! Sounds intriguing. I suspect I'll try and read it this year.
