Recently finished "Six Frigates" by Ian Toll. Excellent history of the founding of the US Navy. I thought I knew rigging....yikes!

Debbie Zapata Maybe everyone is cruising....=))

But since I am a curious kitty, I would like to ask a general question and see what happens.

How did you all discover your love for the ocean, for sailing, for ships and for books about them?

I was a desert rat in Arizona and have only seen the ocean once in a childhood family trip up the California coast and have never been to sea. But I used to listen to my Dad reading Treasure Island aloud to my brother, who was sick at the time. Loved the story and the way my Dad read it. For years after that I wanted to be a lady pirate....drove my Mother nuts. Ever since then I have enjoyed reading all types of sea tales.

Hi Debbie. For me it started when my Dad told me stories about his experiences in the Navy, which led to my joining the Navy as well. While in the Navy I saw sailboats at sea and deserted islands and thought, "Hey, I could do that too." And so I did. Circumnavigated the Pacifc and now I live in Arizona.

message 21: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Wow, that's cool, Steve!

message 22: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Good question Debbie. I was entrenched in the corporate world, I didn't know the sailing world existed. Then I lost someone very close to me, they were young and I realised the same could happen to me and why was I giving all my time to someone else? So I ran away - literally . . . it's all in Of Foreign Build, out November-ish time!

message 23: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Sometimes the traumatic events in our lives push us to where we are supposed to be, don't they. I admire you and Steve both for daring to do what it was time for you to do. I think a lot of people ignore those types of signals....and look what they miss. I will be sure to watch for your book!!

message 24: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Thanks Debbie and fair winds in all you do!

message 25: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Hi, how is everyone? I've been busy reading and writing and eating chocolate myself.

I don't have too many of my 'sea stories' books here in Mexico with me but I hope to bring a few down when I visit my mom in November. Meanwhile I looked here for possibilities to read online:

http://www.readanybook.com/ebooks/lis...

There are three pages there! Just a quick glance they seem to be mostly charts or instructions for various areas....I thought all you real sailors might get a kick out of them.
I do think they need to tidy up their lists though...The Smooth Sailing Cookbook turned out to be for beginning cooks, not for ship's cooks....oh well....=))

Enjoy your weekend!!

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Hi Debbie, I've been busy painting and sanding the boat, and of course, eating chocolate! I had a quick look - thanks for the link - they all seems a bit dated - mind you Pilots can be used for many years, not much changes (but they have to be kept up to day) - interesting stuff - such BORING covers! :-)

Debbie Zapata Hi Jackie and all....Have switched my online reading site to Project Gutenberg since ReadAny seems to have changed to downloading only....don't like to be forced into that.

I've been in a poetry mood lately and just found this volume at Gutenberg....http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1...
I can't help it...I love to read anything about the old sailing ships and adventures of those days! Looking forward to this one and thought I would share if anyone else has the same quirky taste...=))

Jackie, are you getting ready for another journey? Have a lovely weekend!

message 28: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Hi Debbie and all.... we are having a break from sailing but still on a boat - we have just bought a Dutch Barge in France - and THAT is an interesting exercise. While it doesn't "sail" we are still on the water - and are finally leaving port tomorrow to head south - to the Canal du Midi for winter, tomorrow. I saw someone talking about uploading some pictures to share - I'd like to do that - but can't see how we do it here... any one know (if not, I am creating a photo album on our nine year sail around the world (to compliment the book) once that is done - I will let you know!

message 29: by Debbie (last edited Sep 14, 2014 06:14AM) (new)

Debbie Zapata Wow, Jackie...what an exciting adventure! I hope you write a book about the barge too!
I've seen pictures in the various groups but I have no clue how they get posted. As you can see, I don't even have a picture of myself....I'm lucky to get from page to page and send e-mails....anything more complicated and I'm lost. =)) Maybe Steve would know....it would be cool to see your pictures!
Enjoy your trip south!

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Thanks! heading off today - on a VERY foggy morning! So excited to get going - if I can't paste pics here - I will on www.jackieparry.com please stop by and say HI - and Debbie, previous, previous owners of our boat (now called Rouge Corsair) did write a book about their trip - it is called on a small barge in France - Lionel - or something similar - about to receive my copy to read and find out the history - it may inspire a sequel! lol :-)

message 31: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata I just did my morning check of my favorite online newspaper and look what I found this time....a picture article about bookshops...I want to go to Greece so I can rent a cat while I read! =))

message 32: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Love it Debbie! Love them all - especially the church! And "they" reckon paper books are a thing of the past! :-) Thanks for sharing!

message 33: by Tarquilla (new)

Tarquilla | 2 comments Thanks for sharing that link - some great places there. I love the idea of the book barge.

Jackie Parry | 17 comments Hi all, I have some links to some great sailing pics (below), but first I just wanted to let you know that my book Of Foreign Build (from corporate girl to sea-gypsy woman)has been launched on Amazon (ebook and paperback) and is already a No.1 bestseller in its category. Cruisers' AA (accumulated acumen) is now available on Kindle too, for an incredibly cheap price, also on Amazon (No.5 in its category) - if you are not interested in the books, you can still see our pictures of our nine year circumnavigation here: http://jackieparry.com/of-foreign-bui... and for Cruisers' AA all the really neat navigation diagrams (and more pics: here: http://jackieparry.com/pics/ I also do a fortnightly article on cruising/sailing/living on board on my blog.... :-)

Emmanuelle | 3 comments Hi all,
I am new to Goodreads, to this group and to so many things as I self-published a children book which is now available on Amazon https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8....
If you are dreaming about sailing off with your family or want to introduce the idea to your kids, if you want to dream about exotic islands, if you want to sail away few minutes, Merlin's Voyage might be your book or a great Christmas present for a little sailor around you! Fair winds
Merlin's Voyage
Le Voyage de Merlin

Debbie Zapata Hi everyone ~~

I've been doing some shuffling of various things here on GR and have decided to leave this group. I wish you all smooth sailing (and happy trails when on land!) and the best of luck in all you do.

Take care ~~

Debbie
