Kristie | 5928 comments As the end of the year draws near, many of us will start thinking of resolutions to improve ourselves or our lives in the new year. I often think of thinks I will do differently or goals I'd like to achieve with my reading. Do any of you have any "book resolutions" for next year?

message 2: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments My resolution is that I'm going to try to wrap up some challenges that I've joined and not join so many in 2015, giving me more time to read some books that I really want to read. I have books that I've wanted to get to for years, but they often get overlooked. I love doing challenges, so I won't give them up completely, but just not so many where it takes me 1/2 an hour to update my challenges after reading a book! I have a bad habit of over-obligating myself.

Madhuri_v (ninemuses) | 5 comments Hey Kristie,

This is indeed a good topic. I have a collection of Tales of Gautam Buddha's life as Bodhisattva. They are seven volumes. I am planning to finish reading them in 2015. This is apart from all the reading I do on regular basis.

Mads

Pepperpots I've read the first GoT book - I'd like to read the others.

Katie | 31 comments Just to read whenever possible and enjoy.

Ash (morethanfairytales) | 115 comments I'm rubbish at sticking to resolutions, but if I can accomplish half of these, I think I'll be satisfied.

1. Read 150 books.
2. Re-read 10 of my favorite books.
3. Participate in and successfully complete several readathons.
4. Expand my library to include more LGBTQ-positive, feminist, political, and diverse (from authors outside the U.S.) literature.
5. Kick my addiction to Amazon and support local independent bookstores as much as possible.
6. Write timely book reviews!

message 7: by Madhuri_v (new)

Madhuri_v (ninemuses) | 5 comments Ashley!

Fantastic resolutions! I am stealing a few of them! Especially 4 and 6. I do the 5th as a practice!

Madhuri

message 8: by J (new)

J Mine is simple: to read more genres. I stick with YA and a lot of fantasy and paranormal. I want to read more romance and chick lit in particular, and I'm also going to read more adult literature.

message 9: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Dec 06, 2014 07:29AM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Thanks, Mads.

Ashley - I have the same problem with Amazon! It is just so convenient.

J - Have you read Me Before You? It was really good. I'm nut much of a romance person, but I liked this one a lot.

message 10: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 20 comments I love this idea!
I completely agree with Ashley on her #5 resolution. It's hard to find local bookstores where I'm from (a super small town in nowhere Arkansas), but I'm gonna try.
I think my biggest resolution will be to try and read most of the books I already own, instead of constantly buying books and adding them to my pile. I've got about 300 in my bedroom that need some TLC.
And I've always wanted to do the 1000 books you need to read before you die, so I think I'll try to knock some off that list!

I've added it to my want to read shelf! Thanks!

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments My resolutions are
1. Finish all the series/trilogies I have started.
2. Read 100 books
3. Read at least 4 books a month.

message 13: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 90 comments My resolutions are:

1. Finish the challenges I've started and not have so many open challenges at once.
2. Read 15 Boxall books
3. Get War & Peace off my shelf by reading it (No large books until that one is done!)

message 14: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 20 comments Chase- War and Peace has been on my bookshelf for years. I'm slightly intimidated by it!

message 15: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments Side note: I almost bought war and peace. But I chickened out.
I think my book resolution will be to read Les Miserables. I have been wanting to reread it since the film came out in 2012 so it's time. So 2015 might be the year.
I also hope to maybe beat my reading challenge. I set my goal at 35 and I have read I believe 42. So I'm hoping to beat that, but I don't want to pressure myself and resent an activity that is meant to be fun.
Lastly, I want to read everything on my tbr. Luckily it's not that out of control I think I have 8-9 books. Totally manageable. I hope to end 2015 with a tbr of 0.
That's it. So yeah- maybe war and peace will be my 2016 resolution. Haha.

message 16: by Paul (last edited Dec 09, 2014 11:59AM) (new)

Paul Cookson | 7 comments Well for me I've set myself a target of 40 books to read hopefully including Catch 22 (I've tried this book at least 6 times and I just can't get through it). I'm also hoping to find something completely new to try whether that is a brand new author or genre I really don't know. (suggestions more than welcome but no horror or sloppy romance please!)

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

What a great idea! Resolutions are always inspiring. :) Here are mine for 2015:

1) Read 75 books (up from my goal of 50 this year)
2) Read at least five books that are considered "Classics"
3) Finish one of these series: "Women of the Otherworld," "Stephanie Plum," or "Redwall." I have read quite a few of the books, but would like to complete the list!

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) Hi all! I came across a neat challenge recommendation for 2015 on Pinterest. Here's the link:

http://www.popsugar.com/love/Reading-...

I plan to do it but was wondering if anyone else is interested in doing it as a group? If so, let me know and I'll be glad to type it up. :)

message 19: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments Jessica that's a cool list I'm interested in doing that too. I

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) Awesome! Do you want me to type it up and send it to you as a message so when you create a discussion for it you can just copy/paste?

message 21: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments I copied it and pasted it for my own reference so no need to type it. The link you gave works great. Just however you want to do it let me know. It looks so fun!

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) I know! I like that they're fairly basic and simple..I get frustrated with impossible challenges! We could plan to start January 1st, and we could have a discussion thread so people can start their signups if you want? :D I'm excited!

message 23: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments Sounds like a plan!

message 24: by Pepperpots (new)

Pepperpots Another resolution: reduce my shelf "owned-tbr" by 50%

message 25: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments I was looking over the list. I started looking at banned books. There's so many that sound good. Sadly the year of my birth did not bring many good books. Haha.

message 26: by Beth (new)

Beth | 8 comments I guess My Book Resoulution is to finish reading all the books in each of the series on my bookshelf, or at least up to the last book thats out. to be able to read more books in 2015, since this year was not too successful. & to buy & read books from off my wishlist, Not adding to the already Big TBR list! & to maybe complete a few challenges, but not so many or too much that it becomes a chore, reading is meant to be fun & relaxing, not a chore that is boring & no fun!

message 27: by Angel (new)

Angel I love this topic! I think in 2015 I'm going to goal myself higher on my reading challenge (I've done 50 for 2 years now) and I want to read more books with substance. I read a lot of 'fluff' books this year. I BUY books with substance and enjoy them most times I just don't choose them first to read.

message 28: by Ahmya (new)

Ahmya (ahmyasan) My Book Resolution would be to decrease the amount of books in my TBR list

message 29: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Jessica - If you'd like to start a challenge thread, feel free to do it in the individual challenges folder. That way other people will see it and may sign up to do it with you. If you'd prefer, I can set the thread up for you.

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) For anyone interested in the challenge I suggested above, I created a discussion board, so feel free to go ahead and sign up and reserve your post! :D Here's the link:

message 31: by Rua (new)

Rua Ibrahim (ruaibrahim) | 10 comments I plan on reading Ken Follett's The Century Trilogy, as well as reading 175 books. I would like to try reading nonfiction.

message 32: by Morgan (new)

Morgan I noticed that I had only read 13 books this year! I was alarmed at how low that number is. I'm going to try for 18 this year.

message 33: by Allison (new)

Allison | 269 comments I'm going to lower my reading challenge goal a bit as I know I will fall far short this year (12 books behind!), so hopefully I'll be able to succeed in 2015 :D

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) My main goal is to read ALL of the books I own and staying away from the library until I do!

I also plan to read at least one book in French (with lots of help from a dictionary). :D

message 35: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennifer2025) You all have such great ideas! I love this group. I'm trying to decide how many books I'd like to read this year. I increase it every year. What is the maximum you have read in any year, and were they short books, books of substance, or both?

message 36: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 3 comments My goal is to read a majority of my books on my to-read book list

message 37: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Jessica - Great goals. I have so many books that I own and haven't read yet. It's so hard to read them when I'm so tempted by other books on Goodreads! Also, I'd love to read a book in another language, but I'm not even close to being able to do that. Let us know how you do with that.

Jennifer - This year I have read more books I have ever read in a year. I am currently at 78 and will probably end the year at 80 or 81. My goal was 50, so I'm quite shocked! I started on Goodreads a couple of years ago when I was in a reading slump. I think my goal my first year started out at 6 or 8 books for the year, so it's changed a lot. I read a few short books and a few longer chunksters, but most were (I'm guessing) 300-500 pages.

Cassandra - I don't think I can read all the books on my TBR before I'm 90. lol

message 38: by Angel (new)

Angel I *MIGHT* be able to get through a big chunk of my TBR list if I stopped adding all year long! ;)

message 39: by M (new)

M I am German and my goal this year was to read at least 20 books in English and two in French.
Now I read more than 30 books in English and three in French. I am so happy that I more than reached my goal!:)
Next year my goal will probably be to read more than 60 books. But I am not sure now.

message 40: by Angel (new)

Angel That's awesome Marikka!

message 41: by M (new)

M Thanks:)

message 42: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Wow, Marikka! That's great. I'm always so impressed when people can do that. I wish I could read in another language.

message 43: by Katie.g (new)

Katie.g | 129 comments Well done Marikka.
My goals for next year are;
1. Finish as many series as possible.
2. Buy more physical copies and less ereader copies.
3. Explore other genres such as sci-fi and thriller/mystery.

Kristie, you've really jumped out of your slump...congrats! :) Thanks for so much detail. I've been trying to decide how much may be too much for me to handle in one year. I was thinking of trying for 84 books next year, but I'm not sure yet.

I wish I could read in multiple languages like Marikka does! Wow! That's awesome.

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Jennifer - You can always edit your goal. The first year I started reading a lot again, I increased my goal 3 or 4 times.

message 46: by Eunice (new)

Eunice Batobatan (yuriko18eunice) | 5 comments 2015 resolution: Buy physical copies of all the the ereader copies that i have.

Thanks! I didn't think that was allowed. That was very helpful. :)

message 48: by Donna (new)

Donna Nowosielski | 143 comments My 2015 Resolution:

1) read more classic including Pride and Prejudice
2) read 100 books
3) read books already in my library
4) read more books off my TBR list

I need to do this too! My husband calls my TBR bookcase (yes bookcase!) my pile of shame!

So true. It is trying to find the balance between 'just reading' and reading for challenges to get you through those tricky books you wouldn't have read otherwise. I think I need to have a read through everyone else's resolutions before deciding on my own for next year ;)
