This article and interview made it sound to me like she was born and raised in the US (Massachusetts) and now lived in London. It doesn't say anything about Hawaii. Elizabeth would like you to decide whether she qualifies. The book will still work, so no worries if she doesn't fit this one.

Claire, I don't think she works, as her parents were French and living as French colonists in Vietnam. I am pretty sure she would have a French citizenship, even though she was born in Vietnam.

Tobey, I am not sure about Paula Hawkins. I think at one point Doris Lessing was mentionned as not working, since she grew up in Rhodesia as a colonial Brit. I can't find enough info on Paula Hawkins to tell what her citizenship would have been growing up. I think to be consistent we should go with no, unless you can find more info to suggest otherwise.
