Altered Carbon
question
Gritty but philosophical sci fi?

I realise this is a long shot but can someone recommend a modern sci fi novel that combines the gritty realism and mercenary attitudes of Richard Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs books with an element of grand, speculative philosophy of the kind you'd find in Frank Herbert's Dune books? Thanks for any ideas.
