I read this book around the mid 90's. The plot revolved around the emergence of these dark/ black shapeshifting creatures that begin to emerge from holes in the earth and the three people who had encountered them who work together to try and stop them. They find each other as they are some of the only people who believe in them and have been able to notice them. The creatures start pursuing them because they don't like to be noticed.

These are the scenes I remember.

The description of large void like holes opening around Earth which the creatures came out of. They were usually in remote areas that weren't noticed.

The man in Africa, older, wakes up one day and just knows that they are coming, or some sort of prophetic signs, I think he lived in a very rural village, maybe had a wife. He slept on a mat on the floor and later complains about mattresses being too soft, "turning your spine to butter".

A woman in USA who works at a call center, I want to say it was midwest, but could be any remote area, she is driving home one night, on cruise control and suddenly hits a dog in the road. She feels bad and when she rolls down her window the wounded creature trys to attack her, it looked like a dog on one side but where it was wounded she sees it's true monster like form.

I can not remember much about the protagonist.

The creatures can be anywhere as they can shapeshift, although it seems you can learn to spot them.

I remember a scene where they are driving together down a highway, the African man points out a piece of tire debris on the road as one of the creatures, it then chases them.

They go to the white house at one point to try and warn people.

There is a scene in a store that sells small black creatures carved out of wood that look like them or are based on the mythology. One of them is actually a creature.

A scene in a restaurant where they try to leave when they realize the creatures are closing in, the creatures are somehow able to warp space/time or your perception of it and they notice they have been running towards the restaurants exit for too long without getting closer.

I can't remember much else.
Although I think the author may have written another similar book about an archaeologist makes a potion from some Aztec or Mayan heiroglyphs and suddenly can see invisible creatures that reside inside natural things.

I don't think that's it, the description sounds too vague.

I mean to say, it isn't Nightworld, but it very well could be the same book that the poster was talking about.
