Greetings Lovers of Paranormal!

Your Fab-5 MODS have consulted about what book we want to recommend and decided we would like to dive into the Heir Chronicles over the next few months, starting with The Warrior Heir by Cinda Williams Chima.

The Warrior Heir (The Heir Chronicles, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima Cinda Williams Chima

"Sixteen-year-old Jack forgets to take his medicine one morning, and by afternoon is filled with such strength he sends his rival, Garrett Lobeck, sailing into the net at soccer tryouts--without even touching him. Jack soon discovers he is no ordinary teen and his medicine is not what he thought it was. Since the secret insertion of a warrior stone in his chest at infancy, Jack has been dosed with a suppressant designed to hold his powers as a Warrior Heir in check until his wizard sponsor can retrieve him and prepare him to fight in a death tournament for supremacy. With the aid of an aunt, old and new friends, and a magical sword, Jack fights to retain his identity and choose his own path. The magical elements of the story aren't adequately set up, and some necessary details seem hastily inserted, while others are left hanging. Together with loose, occasionally redundant plotting, this is a book for avid, forgiving fantasy readers--particularly those for whom an intriguing premise is enough to keep them involved..."

I just ordered the first four books in the series from Amazon. The fifth one ... oof! Still in hardcover only. I'm hoping the price will drop between now and when we get to it :-)

Oooh! Amazon is letting me read the first 20% of the kindle book online while I wait :-)

Jessica (jessical1961) Book 5 is available from Amazon on the kindle for $9.99. I have all 5 books on my wish list and will buy book one, The Warrior Heir, tomorrow. It is only $2.24 + tax.

I can't wait to start reading the series

I just got mine in the mail today, too! Yea! Read the Prologue ... so far I'm not entranced. I'm hoping it picks up in the first real chapter.

"Come on, Jack. That way lies morbidity and mortality. You gotta pick your battles..."

Okay, so through the first chapter and around page 24 the 'too much telling' awkwardness goes away and the story starts to pick up. :-)

Okay ... I tried ... and tried ... to get into this book and it feels too much like being thrown back into high school with all of its awkwardness ... and not in that good way like Harry Potter or Vampire Academy did. I'm at about 45% and going to have to call this a DNF. :-(

I never like Vampire Academy.

I just felt this whole adventure was geared towards middle grade boys. Since I bought the entire book series (all five of them) for this challenge, now I'm stuck with them. I will pass them along to my son who will be old enough to read them in another 2-3 years. I think he'll enjoy them as a middle schooler. I just ... I tried. I just couldn't get into it.

There are some parts of Vampire Academy I like, and others I could do without. I love the Rose and Dimitri story arc, especially Blood Promise when Rose goes to Russia to find him. Having been to some of those parts of Russia and spent time amongst the 'ordinary' Russian people, I thought Richelle Mead did a masterful job of bringing that to life. [*that ... and Dimitri ... I always liked him*] Couldn't stand Lissa (Vasilisa) though.

Jessica (jessical1961) I read all of the Vampire Academy books and loved them all. I have the last book (which my daughter bought me for Christmas the year it came out) and I plan on buying the entire series on my Kindle so I can reread it.

Orion (twilightambition) | 26 comments Okay, I managed to finish this book!

I didn't really care much for it, I felt like I made myself finish it. It really didn't seem well-written. This seemed more like a draft than a finished book. It even had quite a few errors compared to what I'm used to reading.

Did anyone else make it all the way through?

I only made it through 45% before marking it DNF, so it wasn't you. It's marketed as Young Adult, but I think it's more Middle Grade.

At least I only borrowed it from the library. Hopefully your son enjoys them. It looks like an interesting series, we're just not the target audience.
