SOLVED. Mystery thriller: looking for a trail of tattoos. [s]

I read this book about 3-4 years ago. I had found it in the “new arrivals” section then so it must’ve been published around then. It was a story about a man and a woman that uncovered a crime plot from a map tattooed on many different people.

A detail that stood out to me was that to gain trust and get information, the woman got a tattoo of a compass or the NSWE arrows on her feet, since it was one of the most painful places for a tattoo. The north arrow pointed ahead from her toes. That chapter also talked extensively about hand tattoos and how they fade away quickly.

The language and writing style wasn’t very flowery, and it was contemporary writing. I miss it, and I’d love to revisit it.

The cover might have changed, but I seem to remember that the cover had a bright orange.
