I had only read one of the books which was All the Light We Cannot See. I rarely read the current ones, for some reason.
The only two of the many lists I'd read (I believe) were The Martian and I Am Pilgrim. Martian certainly deserved to win. It was innovative and moved like lightening. Pilgrim was also excellent, combining a good mystery/detective story with a spy story. What I found so interesting about it, aside from a cracking good story, was the combination....with a detective story the detective has to trace back from the crime to find the culprit and the spy, if all goes well, has to find the culprit before the crime/attack takes place. Great juxtaposition. I don't remember that particular combination done so well before.
I never even heard of the fiction winner (I never heard of some others either...like romance for example, but those are expected)
What made me "frown and scratch my head" was that I hadn't heard of many of the books that were listed in the fiction category and that the ones I have heard of received so few votes.
I always wonder how objective these surveys are. This one provides great publicity so there's a lot at stake. I read reviews, listen to book podcasts, etc. and I have never heard of the book that won for fiction.
I hadn't either, Barbara. Had to click back to find which one it was in fact. I can't believe some of the others that it won against!
In fact, that reminds me...when I'll click on the genre "literary fiction", some of the names that come up....er...literary, they ain't! yikes.
The winner is a Goodreads Author. At the very least, she/ her agent/friends conducted an excellent campaign. My familiarity with the other books/authors starts with the third runner-up, Jojo Moyes. I read Me Before You with an online group and it made my teeth hurt. Books that have been mentioned positively on Constant Reader begin with the fifth runner-up, David Mitchell.

Thanks for posting the list, Tonya. I believe I've read some of those authors :) I have not read any of Rainbow Rowell's works.
Great list. I always trust the NYTimes even when I don't agree with them. This is also a good source for Christmas present ideas.
Some of them are already on my wish list. :) Just added more...../sigh/

Good blog post, Portia. It made me remember that I have a hard time even picking my favorites from the books that I've read each year.
