message 14: by ChrisP (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus**** was a refreshing change from cookie cutter fantasy. It is an amazing story where words like majestic and terrific falls short. Fans of the fantasy genre looking for something different will be in for a treat.

1/4 Complete

message 15: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Welcome everyone! Chris you already read a book before I had everyone on the list. Way to go.

I read The Night Circus last year and really enjoyed it.

Good luck everyone.

I read that one a few years ago.

message 18: by Kari (new)

Kari Ramírez (kariramirezp) | 65 comments 1/3 complete.
A Christmas Carol.

This is a Christmas story about a Scrooge, this is a man who hates Christmas..

This book makes you appreciate Christmas, friends, family, etc:)

Touch your heart. :)

message 19: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Way to go Kari. I love reading Christmas stories this time of year. It really is a great classic.

Susan C (sacorwin) | 906 comments Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore ****
I suggested this book for one of my book clubs, and the leader didn't think it would be a good 'book club book'. Now that I've read it, I totally disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I can only imagine the discussion that could have taken place.

1/3 complete

message 21: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Way to go Susan. That is one I have wanted to read for some time now.

message 22: by Robin (new)

Robin Helman | 10 comments Made it through Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children, not sure if I will get to number 2

message 23: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Excellent Robin! What did you think of it? I started it before but didn't finish it.

message 24: by ChrisP (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments Robin wrote: "Made it through Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children, not sure if I will get to number 2"

I'm almost finished with it and I doubt it gets a 2 from me.

message 25: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Oh Chris, that doesn't make me want to jump back into it. That sucks because I bought the second book too.

message 26: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Jodi, I liked the beginning of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children much more than I liked the end. I found it to be a fairly quick read, so I may read the second book at some point.

message 27: by ChrisP (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #1) by Ransom Riggs
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children**
This was the most disappointing book I read in 2014. It came with so much promise. Creepy picture and catchy summary took me in. The read was painful but I'm glad I'm through it. With that said, I'm neurotic I will still have to read book two and I'm encouraged by the fact the GR rating is 4.03

3/4 Complete

message 28: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I hope I like it more than you do Chris. After I finish my Twin Read, I am going to start this challenge. I was going to read Miss Peregrine and I still might because I do already have the second book.

message 29: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 500 comments I just finished Life After Life and really loved it (5 stars!). A really interesting idea - what would happen if you got to live your life over and over again? And Kate Atkinson writes so well.
1/2 complete

message 30: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments That is an interesting concept for a book. I didn't realize that was what it was about. Looking forward to seeing what you read next Meg.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt
The Secret History ****
None of the characters were likable, but yet I still wanted to read this book as fast as I could.

2/3 complete

message 33: by ChrisP (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey
Wool Omnibus***
Wool was a solid science fiction from beginning to end. It is full of mystery and intrigue. If post apocalyptic is your thing give it read.

4/4 Complete

Bump me up to 5. I have one more left in me this year.

message 34: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 500 comments Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children finished.
It was a pretty good read (3*). The peculiar children were interesting and a bit creepy and I liked a lot of the elements (time loops, vintage photographs, historic connections). I just don't think the plot was really well planned and there wasn't enough depth in the characters.

2/2 - done!

message 35: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Chris, Wool is on my list! Congratulations on completing your goals Chris and Meg. Chris, I have upped your goal.

message 36: by Susan C (new)

Susan C (sacorwin) | 906 comments The Little Lady Agency (The Little Lady Agency, #1) by Hester Browne
The Little Lady Agency ****
One of the more enjoyable chick-lit books that I've read. I loved seeing the transformation between Melissa and Honey :-)

3/3 - Challenge completed!

message 37: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Congratulations Susan!

I love how people are finished this challenge and I am just going to start tonight!

Cassandra | 5832 comments The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson
4 stars.
Finished December 19

1/5

I was really impressed by this book! I never would have read it if it wasn't a past group read, but it is an incredibly interesting nonfiction book about a period in American history that I knew next to nothing about.

message 39: by Cristal (new)

Cristal Punnett Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, a wonderful story with great characters.

ChrisP Poyner | 387 comments Catch-22 (Catch-22, #1) by Joseph Heller
Catch-22*** Is a dark comedy with a nice mix of Hogan's Hero, M*A*S*H and Doctor Strangelove times 10. It is brilliantly written and just missed a 4 stars because there were times where parts were stale in places. There are plenty of memorable quotes that will make it into my everyday references.

message 42: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I read Catch-22 several years ago. I remember loving it.

message 43: by Robin (new)

Robin Helman | 10 comments Sorry I didn't get back on this, got busy. Like many others, I thought Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children started out so well, but ended poorly. It had so much potential too :(

message 44: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I am halfway through Miss Peregrine's Home and am not in love with it. I thought it would be creepy. It seems very young.

message 45: by Cassandra (last edited Dec 26, 2014 09:02PM) (new)

4 stars.
Finished December 29

4/5

message 49: by Jodi (new)

message 50: by Jodi (new)

Let me know if I have missed any updates. Good luck
