#135 has been in so many acclaimed pics I almost don't know where to find a clue which wouldnt give him away.

He's Irish; often plays cops, motorcycle cops, bartenders, guards.
Appearances in 1930s screwball comedies; one Marx Bros film. Two big Cooper hits. One Hitchcock flick. A big Judy Garland movie. A huge John Ford movie. A huge George Stevens movie.

no score on Verdon or Lansbury

Betsy | 3471 comments Could be. I'll guess Jack Mower, just in case for #135.

message 1657: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
Nope. #135 is another workhorse like we saw earlier in this quizzo. Upwards of 200 film credits. His last listed role was in '55.

Yes, a winnah! #135 is Pat Flaherty! Jill your streak continues

Lookit all the juicy credits that guy has to his name. Like, every acclaimed film over a 15 yr span.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
Flaherty was in 'Grapes of Wrath', 'A Day at the Races', 'The Thin Man', 'A Star is Born', 'Treasure of Sierra Madre', 'Best Years of Our Lives', 'Saboteur', 'Meet John Doe', 'Sgt York', 'My Man Godfrey' and everything else under the sun

message 1661: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments Way to go, Jill. Now the pesky #137.

message 1662: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments I got him from A Day at the Races but he was a face that was everywhere.

I can't figure out #137....have gone through the Tony winners and she doesn't seem to fit any of them but I am obviously missing something. She doesn't look familiar at all.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
Learned a lot during this quizzo so far and its also a good way to keep these classic titles fresh on one's mind.

Re: #137 let's hear from Betsy once more and then maybe start a fresh round.

message 1664: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments Don't give us the answer yet.....I am taking another direction in my search for this mystery woman and I am sure that Betsy is also searching as well.

But you could put up some pictures of new quizzo people.

message 1665: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments I'm with Jill about not giving up on #137, but my kindle is not cooperating so am not sure about my contribution. Am hoping for the new one this weekend.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments #139....I know him. Dwight Frye in his role as Renfield in Dracula

#138 came with the dreaded message "no image"

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
A Winnah! #139. Score for Jill.

Yep. Dwight Frye, a name well-known to horror aficionados.

The madman 'Renfield' ...in one of the very very early 'Dracula' flicks.

And also the 'gunsel' 'Wilmer' in the pre-Huston 'Maltese Falcon'

...among many others! Intense performer!

message 1671: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments Yo, Jlll, for #139.

message 1672: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments ooh, #138 is now up there and altho' he looks a bit familiar, he may be a toughie. And we still have to get that mystery woman who looks like a guy in a wig.

message 1673: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
Okay so #138 is the heavyset English fellow ...#139 was 'Renfield' ...

I think I will give Betsy one more full evening (using her new device) to come up with something. Agreed?

message 1688: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments Here I am! I finally got on. As I mentioned, I am so inept at this. My sister has been helping me. Please don't shut down #137 for at least one more night so I have time to look one more time. Thanks.

message 1689: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments Hooray!!! I think I have run out of guesses for #137, so see what you can do.

message 1690: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments Unhappily, I have gone over EVERYTHING I could think of for #137, but have had no luck.

message 1691: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments We may have to give up on #137.........she doesn't even look slightly familiar to me and I have also gone over everything I can think of.

message 1692: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (last edited Sep 28, 2020 10:45AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
I don't think you will recriminate yourselves over missing #137 but I think you might laugh aloud, or groan, or shriek (in Liza Doolittle - fashion). But it's no shame to occasionally miss one. Also, I did play this card rather close-to-the-vest.

Ready? Alright, its time for the big reveal. Jill, at several points you actually came mighty close to solving it. I was certainly nervous.

This famous star really is a "household name" and really does have two Tony Awards but also (something I deigned not to mention) ...also has an Oscar. An Oscar from the year 1956.

One of the Tony Awards they possess is an honorary Tony for a long-running play on Broadway. They spearheaded a rousing musical in which they appeared almost 5,000 performances.

Is light starting to dawn?

The wacky-looking "chanteuse" in the photo above is taken from a 1969 English 'black comedy' starring Peter Sellers, Ringo Starr, and some Monty Pythons. It's "The Magic Christian" and was a bomb that year. But the movie has all sorts of interesting 'star cameos'. Friends and acquaintances of Ringo Star and Peter Sellers.

Mystery actress #137 is not an actress at all, not even a woman at all. He's an actor.

You'll wail at me ...but it's YUL

That's right.

Yul ....B-R-Y-N-N-E-R, born 1920, star of Rogers' & Hammerstein's 'The King and I'.

Can you stand it? Isn't it a scream? Yul Brynner in DRAG!! lulz

bwaha aha aha aha aha. Look it up on IMdb yourself! Famous macho man Yul Brynner, cross-dressing on screen! lol lol lol lol

message 1693: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3471 comments So Jill was right all along, and that's why you never referred to 'her' as an American! All those wasted hours in research!

message 1694: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
bhahaha aha

Yep I had to toss some red-herrings at Jill to get her to stop thinking about the singer's manliness. I didn't want her to get you on that track.

And no, I never called her by feminine pronouns like 'she' or 'her'. I was careful about that! Fair play was observed.

Yul was born on the other side of the globe. Therefore I didn't make his birthplace explicit, nor did I even say 'European'. I simply mentioned he has been in both US / UK movies, which he has.

Like I said, the payoff here is in wisdom. Now we all know a little more about Tony Award winners.

message 1695: by Jill (last edited Sep 28, 2020 01:54PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments I am not going to say "you are kidding?" since you aren't. I didn't pick up on the lack of a pronoun. I think that is two we had to give up on.

message 1696: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3635 comments Mod
Just two out of 140 total. Not bad at all. The other was ...Zachary Scott, I believe.

Anyway nope didn't make it up; no idea why Yul accepted that strange cameo but I guess he had unexpectedly quirky depths to his sense of humor.

message 1697: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3888 comments That was without a doubt the most difficult quizzo of all time!!! I don't think we would ever had guessed it. I guess Brynner was just having a good time in that short little appearance..

Now, on to #138 (who looks familiar) and #140 who does look a bit like Gilbert Roland that Betsy guessed. but was incorrect.
