SOLVED. A book about a white baby and a black doctor set after the Civil War

I read a book in one of my college classes about a white family who had a baby that swallowed some sort of toy. The baby was having a hard time breathing and only a local black doctor knew how to save him. However, the baby's father was very racist and refused to let the black doctor in his house. During the book, there is a fight between the blacks and whites in the town and the black doctor's son is killed. After the black boy is killed, the white guy realizes he absolutely needs the black doctor to save his son. His baby is saved by the black doctor. The story is set sometime after the Civil War.
