Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments 25.8 -- Hana C's task: Merry Saturnalia!

Saturnalia is the Roman festival celebrating Saturn which runs from approximately December 17th to the 23rd. It was once the most popular celebration throughout the ancient Roman Empire, and many of it’s customs are still observed during the modern holidays that surround the Winter Solstice.

This is a TWO book task. Books with the genre childrens, kids, manga, comics, or graphic novel on their main page are welcome as long as they meet all other SRC rules.

Book One

Giving family and friends gifts during Saturnalia was common. My gift to you is that your first book for this task can be any book of your choice, as long as it meets general SRC requirements. Have fun!

Book Two

Pick from one of the following options, remember to state which option you’ve picked when you post.

1. Saturnalia is a winter holiday, so read a book that shows an outside winter landscape complete with snow. Required: Include the cover in your post.

Examples: Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey Snow by Orhan Pamuk Winter Study (Anna Pigeon, #14) by Nevada Barr

2. The feast was an important part of the festivities. Read a book found on the Food Related Non Fiction list. Required: State which the number the book is at on the list and what page it is on when you post.

3.Now when we hear Saturn, we think of the planet and not the God. Crisp winter nights can be a good time take a telescope out and dream of being among the stars. Read a book with the genre Science Fiction on it’s main page (may be embedded), with a setting that is primarily extra-terrestrial. (i.e. does not take place on Earth of the past/present/future or in an alternate dimension/timeline). If the setting is not clear from the GR description please state how your book fits the task.

Examples: Decision at Doona, Foreigner, City of Pearl

There appears to be snow on the Christmas tree and to the lower left- so yes, you're good to go.

You could have last read the book 11/30/2014- as long as you spend the time to re-read this challenge it's a non-issue to me :-)

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Whoopie! A FREE READ! I've had so much trouble shoving a "really want to read this" book into a slot anywhere this time. YOU are now my new BFF.

Gonna try ONE more time to read The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker and use it for option 2. I've started it the last three seasons, gotten about 100 pages in and given up for one reason or another, so once more into the breach!

Unfortunanly since it has "children's" on it's main page but is not in either the AR or AR UK databases it does not meet SRC rules and is not eligable for any task excepting (possibly) 5.10.

message 43: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Will Battle Angel Alita, Volume 01: Rusty Angel work for Option C? I just read it (it was AWESOME) and it's definitely Sci-Fi but doesn't explicitly state it's on an alien world. Nothing is "earthly" though (ie, floating cities) and there's at least one discussion of finding crashed spaceships to loot for parts so I'm guessing this is on another planet thousands of years in the future.

Mrs.soule wrote: "Will Battle Angel Alita, Volume 01: Rusty Angel work for Option C? I just read it (it was AWESOME) and it's definitely Sci-Fi but doesn't explicitly state it's on an alien world. Not..."

Unfortunantly the wikipedia article for the series says the following about setting:

"The story takes place in the former United States. According to a map, printed in the eighth volume, Scrapyard/Tiphares is near Kansas City, Missouri, and the Necropolis is Colorado Springs, Colorado. Radio KAOS is at Dallas. Figure's coastal hometown is Alhambra. Desty Nova's Granite Inn is built out of a military base – NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado."

So this book will not work for option 3.
