The Paragraph Ranch

THE PARAGRAPH RANCH
The Paragraph Ranch by Kay Ellington and Barbara Brannon, published by Booktrope, is a fast-paced novel set in the Caprock area of the Texas High Plains near Lubbock. Dee Bennett-Kaufmann’s acerbic mother, Mama Alice Bennett, survives a mysterious accident sustaining injuries including two broken wrists that leave her needing long-term help.
Dee’s brother coaches a winning high school football team, and her sister sells real estate in the Dallas Metropolis, while Dee is finishing a term teaching creative writing at a North Carolina university.
PH Dee, as Dee is referred to by her sister, is looking forward to a summer of finishing and finding a publisher for her book through a prestigious and highly sought-after summer fellowship the East Coast and secure and advance her academic career.
The opening paragraph declares: “There’s not a soul in eleven hundred square miles willing to take on the care Mary Alice Bennett for love or money. Of course, who in their right mind could blame them?”
Returning to Texas with so much at stake, Dee engineers a series of unorthodox strategies and creative tradeoffs to keep her options in play –and despite herself finds friendship, love and the power of words in this unlikeliest place.
This book is for everyone who likes a good read, likes unusual settings, family drama, or who has ever thought, or said, “I could write a book.”
Mama Alice’s caustic comments DO grate, reminding me of Elizabeth’s Stouts, Olive Kitterage, another great read.
The Paragraph Ranch plot unfolds with strong twists and turns that zap you with a surprising, but cleverly planned ending.
In addition to the general public, every creative writer and writing group should add this novel to their must have list with more concrete guides than most books on writing, including Steven King’s popular On Writing. Friendship, love, and the power of words are found in this unlikeliest place.
Follow the rules that head every chapter, and solve the whys of the mysterious accident. Who knows what lurks in the hearts and minds of men? The Shadow and The Paragraph Ranch know.
