Eeep! It all depends if my hold comes through - Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart should be at least 29 points. Hmmm, but if it arrives in January I can use it in the series challenge. Maybe I'll just chalk it up to fate either way. -_^

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I read The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu by Mathias Malzieu

TITLE:
7 words (including subtitle) - 7 points
If the main title without a subtitle is 7 words - 7 points

AUTHOR:
If the author's last name is 7 letters long - 7 points

PAGES: 0 points (176pp)

BONUS:
If someone has a bath - 3 points

TOTAL - 24 points

Janice, in this book a character tells another character "I got married" but the wedding is not shown at all. Does that count as 3 bonus points for a wedding taking place?

message 54: by Rebecca (last edited Dec 30, 2014 07:49AM) (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I read The Florabama Ladies' Auxiliary and Sewing Circle

7 words - add 7 pts

- In honour of Christmas, count 3 points if the book has a Christmas theme.
On page 234 it mentions a Christmas tree
- Sachertorte is one of my favourite desserts, and it has it's own day - December 5th. Count 3 pts if there is a cake in the story. P. 192 mentions a birthday cake

Lori Z | 2086 comments I read The Cat Who Could Read Backwards. It was a good little cozy, but added a 30 book series to my tbr pile. 1 down, 29 to go. Thank goodness for next years challenge, lol.

Title (including subtitle) - 8 points
Bonus points for title - 6 points
216 pages - 2 points

Need a ruling on if a character said she took a bath and changed clothes is enough for bonus, or if a cat bathing itself at different times throughout the book would count as a bath.
Yes from Janice - 3 bonus points.

Total points - 19 points.

Possible bonus points if approved by Janice. :)

-Cakes: There is a mention of selling cakes at an annual festival, does that count? approved
-Bath: There are several instances of "bathing" blood and/or dirt from faces and bodies but no one actually gets into a bathtub. There is a scene in which the two main characters wash each others hair in a fountain. rejected

Would you mind taking another look at the title/subtitle thing Janice - it seems to me that "A Mystery" is part of the title and the Mysteries#1 is part of the subtitle like others have listed theirs? But mods reign supreme and I will go with your ruling if you think so :-). I enjoyed it - love Oscar Wilde's character, although I think I liked #5 a bit better than #1. I'm reading them out of order and #6 will be my next one. Hope you enjoy #1 when you read it - I think Gyles Brandreth has done a nice job - they're fun.

message 74: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Sorry, Lilisa, but anything after a colon is a subtitle. It's giving additional information. If you look at the cover, the title is listed "Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance". Then dropped down a couple of lines lower it reads, "A Mystery".

From Dictionary.com: "a secondary or explanatory title. Such titles can explain the form of the work, as in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Remorse: A Tragedy, in Five Acts; they can give an idea of the theme or contents of the book, as in George Eliot's Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life; or they can simply be an alternate title, which may or may not be a comment on the work, such as Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded by Samuel Richardson and Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. "

How are there no pages? When I do a search, it says 213 pages. If you are reading an audiobook or ebook, you count the pages as reported on the first book that comes up on the search page.

Phew! That was like pulling teeth, Mariab. The rules clearly state: "6. The book must be 150 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading eBook or audiobook page numbers will be determined by the issue that comes up on a Goodreads search." You may as well take all the points you are entitled to.

message 96: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I have been reading books with long titles all month, partly because I discovered an entertaining series that starts with How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf. I've read three or four books by that author that would qualify, but now I have confused myself as to which books have cakes (nearly all of them), baths (only one of them), and weddings (at least one, maybe two). None of them are going to get a winning level of points, however, so I am just going with the one I remember best, How to Run with a Naked Werewolf.

Title (with subtitle) 9 points
main title, 7 words 7 points
author's name, Harper 6 points
352 pages 3 points
cake, yes 3 points
bath, yes 3 points
wedding, no
Total points: 31.

Now, I am off to finish reading 2 A.M. at The Cat's Pajamas.
