The story follows a gay man, Arthur Less, around the world as he runs away from having to confront the marriage of his boyfriend of the past 9 years, and his quickly approaching 50th birthday. He fears aging and being alone. As you can imagine, all his adventures in Paris, India, Germany, Morocco, etc only force him to confront these realities in ways that are sometimes humorous and sometimes sad. There are moments where I totally understood Arthur and his fears, which have nothing to do with being gay. There were moments that forced me to think about how his being gay made everything different, like the fact that he had few role models for aging because many of his peers had died from AIDS. The book has some very funny moments, and that probably saved the book for me. Then the ending killed it. It did not work for me at all. Pulitzer? Really?
