Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 1436 comments The first trailer finally dropped and … I'm probably not going to be very popular around here for this … I hated that they used a very crappy version of Pink Floyd's song Eclipse from Dark Side of the Moon as the theme. I basically couldn't watch the trailer it was so off-putting for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love that song. I love old PF. But PF to me is very 1970s British and hearing over top of the visuals for Dune, which is supposed to be "very much not of this world we live in" just broke my immersion.

The visuals looked … pretty?

All the cast looks like (and is) attractive Hollywood actors. Which is part of why I've always distrusted this remake. Well, any film based on a book really. It doesn't feel real to me. It feels like a big budget film trying to impress me with its gorgeousness.

I blame the pandemic for my dour mood. (Though in reality I'm always like this with movies … and books … and music … and [insert whatever].)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1223 comments I liked the trailer. But I'm a little disappointed that the stilsuits still don't have hoods. I suppose it'd cover up everyone's nice hair...

message 53: by Hans (new)

Hans | 189 comments I liked the trailer and after Balde Runner 2049, I trust Denis Villeneuve to deliver an aesthetically pleasing as well as entertaining but not dumbed down SciFi movie. Also, when it comes to SciFi, I kinda want it to look good.
And I like most of the actors, so that's a plus. A series might fit the source material better, but I guess that wouldn't be affordable in that quality.

Michele | 1215 comments Good music is definitely a plus for a big epic like this.

Looking forward to it and if nothing else - I want to reread it. Not so keen on the later books though but Dune was epic

Jacqueline | 2428 comments And it’s just been announced that it will be released in October 2021 now. Apparently cinemas are closing and they won’t make any money.

P.L. Stuart | 82 comments Was really looking forward to this one but guess we all have to wait a bit now. Hadn't seen anything with the young Timothee Chalamet in it, until I watched "The King", on Netflix, which is, for those of you who don't know, about King Henry V of England. Loved Chalamet's performance, so was eagerly anticipating seeing him in "Dune". Oh well, additional patience required due to things being pushed back...like everything else in these uncertain times....hoping it's worth the wait.

Don Dunham PL Stuart, Well Said!

message 59: by Grace (new)

Grace (misadventurous) | 144 comments They announced that Dune will be making the debut in HBO Max instead. Moment of silence for us who don’t have HBO Max available in our region.

message 60: by Alina (last edited Dec 04, 2020 12:45PM) (new)

Alina Leonova (alina_leonova) | 47 comments I didn't know anything about the film, but your discussion inspired me to check out the trailer, and now I want to watch it! :D Weird, but from the trailer alone Paul seemed like a more vulnerable and likeable person than what I perceived him to be from the book.

message 61: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments I have a Roku and HBO Max isn’t available that way. I think I have a work around. YouTube TV *is* on Roku snd one can get HBO Max that way!

Christopher | 981 comments According to CNET: HBO Max exec on Roku deal: 'We'll get it done'

message 63: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6130 comments and according to the latest news the movie won't be released until October 2021, so they have plenty of time to fix it

message 64: by Krysta (new)

Krysta (spicy.spine.breaker) (kchampagne) | 19 comments October is so close, but so far away ! I can't wait to see this remake.

Doing my best to keep my expectations in check so I'm not dissapointed.... but I'm failing there.

message 65: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments Hbo Max is now on Roku! I’ll probably see the film in the theater though

message 66: by Grace (new)

Grace (misadventurous) | 144 comments Just dropping by to say I saw Dune in iMax (fully vaxx cinemas, distancing, and less capacity). It was glorious glorious glorious visual and sound spectacle! Can’t get over it. They did great with what material they had. (Hope i don’t offend hardcore Dune fans!)

message 67: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Not offending anyone in this day and age is quite the trick these days. With Dune I think most will agree after reflection that Dune creates lots of questions. Some will think, maybe that's what all those other series books were about. The Author told a great story but also let the readers share in the heavy lifting.

message 68: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 280 comments I hated the original Dune movie - just dreadful (especially Sting). Mind you I loved the Peter Jackson LOTR movies - even though I hated some inclusions/changes - and how did they leave out the scouring of the Shire FFS? Overall, I thought he did a great job.

I have high hopes of this new Dune. Does anyone know when it starts in Oz? And what channel?

message 69: by Lars (new)

Lars Dradrach (larsdradrach) | 87 comments I could accept dividing LOTR into 3 movies (it's 3 books after all) and accepted waiting a year between each movie. But there's no way I'm going to watch half of Dune and wait for the other half that's not even planned yet.

message 70: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6130 comments I always thought Dune should be three movies

Paul up until he was found and accepted by the Fremen
Paul's life with the Fremen
the battle for Arrakis and deposing the Emperor

1000% Agree! Though.... whether I'll be able to stand the waiting of subsequent movies is a whooooole other question. Ive been anxious waiting for this one as it is!!

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, two movies at the most. I also agree, I am not going to see any part 1 of any movie when the second has no schedule, no announcement, and no interest. What the studio is looking at is to see how many of you people will see the first movie, before the commit to a second. That is BS. They should have used Peter's Jackson's plan and shot the live action for both up front. This tells me the studio has no real confidence in this movie so why should I? This is a pass for me.

message 73: by Lowell (new)

Lowell (schyzm) | 578 comments Watched it last night.

Holy. Forking. Shirtballs.

It is by far one of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen. The pacing is slow, and deliberate. The set design and costuming are phenomenal. The music is perfectly atmospheric. The casting was excellent, and the acting is good. There is almost no trace of the 1984 Lynch debacle.

This is not an action movie. It really is only half of the first book, and it is so incredibly well done. I sincerely hope that Villanueve gets to film part 2, because part 1 is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

message 74: by [deleted user] (new)

Like I said before, when they finish the movie, call me. Otherwise I am not interested in seeing a half finished movie where there is no plan to do the second half.

message 75: by Anushree (new)

Anushree | 14 comments I heard it was quite boring, which is not surprising since it is based on first half of the book so probably has a slow built up and the first Dune movie was such a fail. They should have made it a TV series instead, the world building works best in series form specially for books like Dune

Allison Hurd | 14227 comments Mod
Yeah, I wish they'd just made the deal with HBO and done it as a mini series or something. THAT SAID...yeah, really great. I could have done with a biiiit more character building with the family household? But I truly loved the blend of horror cinematography techniques with the SF / colonization aesthetic.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

It was done as a mini series by SciFI channel I think. The original Dune was in two parts and they also did Dune Messiah. All in all I thought they were fairly good. What I always wanted to see was the 1975 planned movie. The idea of Salvador Dali playing the Emperor just made my day.

message 78: by Anna (last edited Oct 24, 2021 12:56PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments When I saw that it's going to be on HBO Max in a couple of weeks (in Finland), it was a 100% killing blow to any lukewarm tentative possibilities of seeing it on the big screen. I'll definitely watch it now though, which I wasn't sure I would before, so I don't know if this is a win or not?

message 79: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments I saw it in the theater today and it was EXCELLENT!

message 80: by Lowell (new)

Lowell (schyzm) | 578 comments Here’s the thing:

For someone who isn’t involved in the artistic factors of visual filmmaking, I can see that it could be considered “Slow” or “Boring.”

For me, because I’ve spent a lot of time doing film studies, I was falling-out-of-my-seat excited by almost EVERY camera shot, all of the compositions. I paused, and backed up to just see exactly what Villanueve had put on the screen because it’s so well done.

I am seriously considering breaking my “no big events” rule just to go see this in theaters a second time - JUST because it’s such a visual feast.

Re: Allison - yes, I really only think that the one person who could have used a few more lines was Shadout Mapes - and very possibly some explanation of Thufir and the reason Mentats exist could be interesting, but I think is hardly necessary for the actual story being told.

I found the acting and choice of lines for Duncan, Gurney, and Jessica to be very very well chosen - they were distilled down to the essence of their characters.

I haven’t read the book in at least 5 or 6 years now and explicitly didn’t re-read it pre-film because I wanted to see how well this could stand on its own. I really feel like it did.

I thought this was really cool to listen to, if you like film theory. https://youtu.be/GoAA0sYkLI0

One of the absolute best scenes in the film, imo.

message 83: by Lowell (new)

Lowell (schyzm) | 578 comments it's a really excellent breakdown of what he did in the scene and why. Thanks for sharing it.

message 84: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (baelnic) | 5 comments I liked the movie, definitely my favorite of the Dune adaptations. My only complaint was the lack of dialogue. There was so much they left out that could have been covered in a few lines of dialogue without adding runtime.

Maybe it’s just my age and preference but I prefer to have way more dialogue between characters, especially for this adaptation. I know that’s a directors preference but I believe it is a trend to make movies more sparse and brooding.

Also, if they don’t make the second part I may just stop going to Warner Brothers movies all together. Extreme? Possibly, but I *need* a completion to this adaptation.

message 85: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2364 comments So I hear that they skipped over the dinner scene. Which seems something of a shame to me. It really makes it clear how things are shaking out and the various political aspects of what is going on.

message 88: by Christopher (new)

Christopher | 981 comments I enjoyed this. Great visuals, haunting music, seemed to do a decent job of sticking to the source material as much as made sense. Not sure I can think about the TV show "The Voice" in the same way ever again. Watched this one on HBO, hopefully could see 2 in theater.

message 89: by Constantina (new)

Constantina Maud (constantinamaud) | 1 comments Loved this adaptation. The superb cinematography and direction, the surreal soundtrack, and the excellent performances of the cast left me in awe. Especially with regards to the cinematography, I found many subtle yet clear references to Greek mythic cycles or Neoclassical paintings, even! I haven't read the books yet, but I really liked how the screenwriters approached the story. Most certainly looking forward to the next installment!

message 91: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments That is great news!

I went with my 12 y o last week. He found it confusing. Possibly because of the lack of dialogue. You really are left to your own devices to follow the story. It’s been, I don’t know 18 years since I read the books? Like someone above, I’m glad I didn’t reread previous to watching it so I could see it on its own terms. The more I consider it the more I find I really like it a lot. Can’t wait to watch it again and for the 2nd installment too!

message 92: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6130 comments I just watched the DVD - amazing. Loved the fleshing out (compared to the Lynch movie) of Duncan & Gurney. Stilgar also. I do believe the two parts will work.

It did start out slow and Mr CBR kept nodding off in the scenese before the Gom Jabbar.

message 93: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronb626) | 156 comments Was going to see the movie, but, due to wife's illness, I missed it. Then, my library had a copy of the DVD in the Lucky Day display. Grabbed it right away as I knew that the hold list is very long on that movie.

Loved it. Have loved the story since I first read in in 1970. Have read 5 books of the Dune Chronicles. Dune itself I've read 3 or 4 times. Never got through Chapterhouse: Dune, though. But, it's still on my TBR list. Since I found an audiobook of it, it'll bubble up to the top of that list very quickly.
