Dune Remake (2020)

And I like most of the actors, so that's a plus. A series might fit the source material better, but I guess that wouldn't be affordable in that quality.

Theres very little info out so far with a planned Dec 2020 release date, but its getting a big..."
Looking forward to it and if nothing else - I want to reread it. Not so keen on the later books though but Dune was epic

Doing my best to keep my expectations in check so I'm not dissapointed.... but I'm failing there.

I have high hopes of this new Dune. Does anyone know when it starts in Oz? And what channel?

1000% Agree! Though.... whether I'll be able to stand the waiting of subsequent movies is a whooooole other question. Ive been anxious waiting for this one as it is!!
Sorry, two movies at the most. I also agree, I am not going to see any part 1 of any movie when the second has no schedule, no announcement, and no interest. What the studio is looking at is to see how many of you people will see the first movie, before the commit to a second. That is BS. They should have used Peter's Jackson's plan and shot the live action for both up front. This tells me the studio has no real confidence in this movie so why should I? This is a pass for me.

Holy. Forking. Shirtballs.
It is by far one of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen. The pacing is slow, and deliberate. The set design and costuming are phenomenal. The music is perfectly atmospheric. The casting was excellent, and the acting is good. There is almost no trace of the 1984 Lynch debacle.
This is not an action movie. It really is only half of the first book, and it is so incredibly well done. I sincerely hope that Villanueve gets to film part 2, because part 1 is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
Like I said before, when they finish the movie, call me. Otherwise I am not interested in seeing a half finished movie where there is no plan to do the second half.

Yeah, I wish they'd just made the deal with HBO and done it as a mini series or something. THAT SAID...yeah, really great. I could have done with a biiiit more character building with the family household? But I truly loved the blend of horror cinematography techniques with the SF / colonization aesthetic.
It was done as a mini series by SciFI channel I think. The original Dune was in two parts and they also did Dune Messiah. All in all I thought they were fairly good. What I always wanted to see was the 1975 planned movie. The idea of Salvador Dali playing the Emperor just made my day.

For someone who isn’t involved in the artistic factors of visual filmmaking, I can see that it could be considered “Slow” or “Boring.”
For me, because I’ve spent a lot of time doing film studies, I was falling-out-of-my-seat excited by almost EVERY camera shot, all of the compositions. I paused, and backed up to just see exactly what Villanueve had put on the screen because it’s so well done.
I am seriously considering breaking my “no big events” rule just to go see this in theaters a second time - JUST because it’s such a visual feast.
Re: Allison - yes, I really only think that the one person who could have used a few more lines was Shadout Mapes - and very possibly some explanation of Thufir and the reason Mentats exist could be interesting, but I think is hardly necessary for the actual story being told.
I found the acting and choice of lines for Duncan, Gurney, and Jessica to be very very well chosen - they were distilled down to the essence of their characters.
I haven’t read the book in at least 5 or 6 years now and explicitly didn’t re-read it pre-film because I wanted to see how well this could stand on its own. I really feel like it did.

One of the absolute best scenes in the film, imo.

Maybe it’s just my age and preference but I prefer to have way more dialogue between characters, especially for this adaptation. I know that’s a directors preference but I believe it is a trend to make movies more sparse and brooding.
Also, if they don’t make the second part I may just stop going to Warner Brothers movies all together. Extreme? Possibly, but I *need* a completion to this adaptation.

I went with my 12 y o last week. He found it confusing. Possibly because of the lack of dialogue. You really are left to your own devices to follow the story. It’s been, I don’t know 18 years since I read the books? Like someone above, I’m glad I didn’t reread previous to watching it so I could see it on its own terms. The more I consider it the more I find I really like it a lot. Can’t wait to watch it again and for the 2nd installment too!

It did start out slow and Mr CBR kept nodding off in the scenese before the Gom Jabbar.

Loved it. Have loved the story since I first read in in 1970. Have read 5 books of the Dune Chronicles. Dune itself I've read 3 or 4 times. Never got through Chapterhouse: Dune, though. But, it's still on my TBR list. Since I found an audiobook of it, it'll bubble up to the top of that list very quickly.
Don't get me wrong, I love that song. I love old PF. But PF to me is very 1970s British and hearing over top of the visuals for Dune, which is supposed to be "very much not of this world we live in" just broke my immersion.
The visuals looked … pretty?
All the cast looks like (and is) attractive Hollywood actors. Which is part of why I've always distrusted this remake. Well, any film based on a book really. It doesn't feel real to me. It feels like a big budget film trying to impress me with its gorgeousness.
I blame the pandemic for my dour mood. (Though in reality I'm always like this with movies … and books … and music … and [insert whatever].)
