Carolyn | 9838 comments The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix was not quite what I was expecting, but was fun nevertheless, as a group of Southern housewives take on a vampire.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments From the back-cover blurb and the first few chapters, I thought The Safe Place, the debut novel by Aussie author, Anna Downes, was going another direction entirely. Brilliantly plotted!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Anne Tyler’s latest novel Redhead by the Side of the Road, presents fans with a dilemma: read it slowly to prolong the pleasure; or give in and devour it quickly. I have no will-power with this author’s work so I read it in a day and my only complaint is that I would have dearly loved more of Micah Mortimer, her quirky protagonist.

My review for The Pearl Diver can be found here.

Flawed, but still quite an interesting read. 4 plunges into crystal blue waters.

Note: S. Elliot Brandis is an Australian author

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Brave Girl, Quiet Girl is another brilliant read by American author, Catherine Ryan Hyde. Enormously moving and thought-provoking. I had tears streaming down my face several times, so have the tissues ready and maybe don't read it in public? This one is out 19th May.

I love her books Marianne. She's so good at writing about people and relationships.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Having not read Helen Garner's controversial book, The First Stone: Some Questions of Sex and Power when it was first published, I took the opportunity to read it with some added extras in this 25th Anniversary edition offered by NetGalley and Pan Macmillan. (I also listened to Garner narrating the audio version via Wollongong City Library and Borrowbox. Still much of relevance a quarter of a century on.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I've had a couple of political reads recently. Colombiano is about the terrifying situation of kidnappings, guerrillas, and drug wars in Colombia.

Aussie-born author Rusty Young spent a lot of time there and wrote this compelling, fictionalised, first-hand account of a child soldier.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments On an entirely different political note, I just enjoyed this children's biography Work It, Girl: Michelle Obama by Caroline Moss. Written to inspire girls to become leaders, it has lots of details and includes more resources at the end.

Great review, Marianne - looking forward to this one as I love her writing, even though a male reader. What you said about her main protagonist is what I think about Olive Kitteridge in the two books by Elizabeth Strout - only two books, give me more!!
