Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Why I'm not surprised it didn't change the price... :/

message 2202: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments Glad they finally got rid of it, but really... That is less than two years ago and 19 years is too long to consider it a luxury. Let any man have a period and then tell us anything having to do with it is a luxury. (They should be giving us that stuff for free!! lol)

message 2203: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just looked at UK and the tampon tax was scrapped in the latest budget in 2020!!! It had 5% VAT on them.

Crazily, I noticed that VAT was going to be added to PPE soon.

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Peggy wrote: "Lol, must have been men who thought of that in Wales.. isn't it the same with taxes in some countries, that those items fall in the highest category as if they're luxury products?"

Yes, in Belgium...Sanitary towels and tampons were seen as 'luxury' and we've paid higher taxes for it, but I think it changed this year.

That makes no sense. How could that possibly be a luxury item?

message 2207: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments What's PPE?

message 2208: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments Saar The Book owl wrote: "What's PPE?"

I think it stands for "personal protective equipment" or something along those lines. So, masks, gloves, etc. Things we all need during a pandemic.

message 2209: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Oct 30, 2020 10:26AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Ah, that' can't be seen as a luxury. It's a necesity. I think the governement needs to take money for somewhere for all the money they lost during the pandemic.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments This has been a a very lucky week for me. I feel very blessed. Yesterday my niece told me she is pregnant again. She has had infertility problems. She thought she would never have any children. Now she will have 2

I also found my Nona's broach. It is a flower shaped piece. It is worth nothing to anyone but her family. I got out my scarves and hats to get ready for winter. It had gotten pushed to the back of the coat closet shelf. It has been lost at least 3 years. It reminds me so much of her. I am going to make a memory box featuring it. This way it won't get lost again

Margo | 11636 comments Congrats to your Renee, that's wonderful news! It's great that you found such a special broach too :-)

message 2213: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Congrats on the new baby, Renee!

Great you found the broach. When my grandma passed a year ago my mom, aunt ant uncle decided her ring (the one she had been using everyday for more than 30 years) would go to me. I loved it. I use it from time to time. I would use it more if it weren't a little big for me. I don't want to lose it. I have thought in making it smaller but I decided not to. I want it the way she used it. I'll just wait until I get more chubby. :)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife's grandmother gave my daughter a creepy ass doll she had since she was 5. Thing is over 90 years old. It resides in the spare bedroom because it's a creepy the eyes always follow you doll.
Walked in and now it's a creepy headless doll. Somehow it fell over or something and the head broke off. I was like well clearly we won't share with the family about this but what shall we do with it

My wife says it's fine we just have to glue it's head back on and put clothes on it that cover up the broke part

Great. Because it was grandma's prized doll now we have to have the creepy ass won't stop looking at me doll with the broken head laying around

The creepy factor is even higher. I didn't think I could be more scared of a doll. Wrong
I've hated those type of Dolls since I was 3 years old and saw the one at my grandma's house

message 2215: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments Sandra, I've seen little plastic bits you can buy and put on your ring like a sleeve to make it a little smaller. Maybe you could try something like that? Just google "ring size adjuster." There are a few different types.

message 2216: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments lol, Travis! My mom had this thing about buying my daughters porcelain dolls for their birthdays every year and my girls hated them. We had to put them out for when my mom visited, but my older daughter would turn hers to face the wall. They freaked her out. Eventually, they slowly got put away and I don't know where any of them are now.

Roz | 4532 comments I'm ready for any trick or treaters that may show up today. We'll wear masks and gloves.
My husband decided that we had to go to the supermarket today and stock up. It's like he's getting ready for the apocalypse, post election rioting in the streets or a second wave of covid. We won't have to go shopping for a while.
When things quiet down a bit in Texas, we'll have to go out there to see my son and check out condos in Austin. We're still planning on moving but the process hit a covid snag.

I've decided not to hand out halloween candies this year, and it saddens me. I've never turned out my lights and hidden in the basement before on halloween. But our numbers are up, and I'm fighting a head cold. The only symptom I have is sinus headache. There's no congestion, just an inflamed feeling. The only 2 people I've come in contact who were sick were both tested for covid and their tests came back negative. The other consideration is I have an MRI booked in Edmonton on the 10th, and I'm doing everything I can to not jeopardize that appointment. Crazy times.

message 2228: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Janice, I think it is the smartest decision if you are not feeling well. I know here many neighbors have decided not to hand out candy. There isn't even a 20% of the Halloween decorations we usually see around. Our neighbor brought homemade cookies yesterday, for example, because she is not planning to hand out candy.
Trick or treating was moved to Nov 1st here due to bad weather. I was thinking that I might put out of my door 10 or 15 closed paper bags with some candy inside for kids to pick up. I felt bad thinking the little ones might be upset if nobody is handing out candy. O guess if they are out anyway it is better that they get something and come back home instead of keep going around to find something. This amount should be enough since we don't usually get many trick or treaters in our block.

message 2229: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Turns out my favorite Sean Connery movie is an Anthony Hopkins movie lol. I always get them mixed up

message 2230: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments The movie is The Edge. No one ever wanted to watch it with me because it was too boring. At that time early 2000's I always wanted to watch The Edge or Stephen Kings Rose Red. And everyone thought they were both boring. Idk. To each their own I guess

message 2231: by Roz (last edited Oct 31, 2020 11:11AM) (new)

Roz | 4532 comments Totally understandable, Janice. The numbers in my area (Nassau County Long Island) are okay. We (hubby and I) were tested last week and we're both negative. Yay! I had an appointment with an ENT for a clogged salivary gland and he required the test before he'd see me. I don't know how may kids will come. Probably not that many. We don't come in contact with anyone, really. Don't allow anyone to come over, stay clear of people on the street when we go for walks (sometimes we don't see a soul). It's almost like we've become recluses. Crazy times indeed.

message 2232: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments My husband made a shoot that we can send candy through. He is more optimistic then I. I feel that we wont get any kids. I know if I had kids I would not let them trick or treat. I bought gifts for the neighbor kids. They will come by in an hour to pick them up. I think they will be the only we see.

message 2233: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments We don't usually have many kids trick-or-treating here so we have decided not to give out candy with the expectation that there probably won't be any kids anyway. I have a couple of Hershey bars in my cabinet in case my neighbor's kids come by. Otherwise, our light will be off. I do still feel bad about it though...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments I'm in buying a kindle but I can't decide if going with a 300 PPI of 167 PPI. Is the different in quality notorious?

message 2235: by Roz (last edited Oct 31, 2020 02:42PM) (new)

Roz | 4532 comments I think it depends on what's important to you. I started out with a regular kindle (2nd generation). No backlight, 167 ppi. I progressed to a Paperwhite when I started having trouble with it. (kept the original as a backup). I like the Paperwhite much better. It's backlit so I can read at night in bed without disturbing my husband, I can adjust the amount of light. Loved it for years. It's 300 ppi and to me it's better than the basic Kindle. On prime day I was able to get a really good deal by trading in my original (basic) Kindle along with the day's deal. Basically, I'd say if it isn't the price that's driving your decision, go for the higher ppi. The quality is better.

message 2236: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Ok. I understand. Thank you, Roz.

message 2237: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Can you go to a store and try both, Sandra?

I don't know anything about PPI, but backlight is one thing I wouldn't want to miss and which is going to be a must have on any ereader I buy. I never read in bed in the dark, but I use the backlight often anyway.

message 2238: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments My best friend said the same thing. I think I'm going with the paperwhite

message 2239: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments My first kindle didn't have back light. I loved it for that reason as I didn't get glare. Then I got a kindle fire. At first, i only used it for internet stuff and used my old kindle for books but then graduqlly started reading books on there. And now i love it. I'm on my second one now. And i would say that backlighting is essential now. Haha.

message 2240: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just googled the Paperwhite and it looks very similar to my Kobo Glo (just based on pictures, didn't compare specifications). I've had it for about 7 years now, one of the best electronic devices I ever bought!

message 2241: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments 7 years! That's good going Peggy.

message 2242: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Yes, my Kindle is from 2012. It still work pretty well, but overdrive announced that it would support that device any more starting October 30, and it actually stopped working. Overdrive is essential to me because it is what I use to check out ebooks from the library. I found a way around (using overdrive in the browser) but I don't know for how long this system will work. It is a potty. I really love my Kindle. Still I have many kindle books there that I can read.

message 2243: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19169 comments Oh no, Sandra. I have an old Kindle too. I think it's the original Fire from Christmas 2011 maybe. I hope Overdrive continues to work on mine. I have my real life book club book on there now and I'm planning to start it in a couple of days. I didn't check to make sure it was still available. I love my old Kindle.

message 2244: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments I got a notification when using the app around 2 weeks before que actual date. I hope you are luckier, Kristie.

message 2245: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Halloween at home was a success. The kids loved it. Completely loved.

My daughter in college and the 6 friends she lives with can't celebrate of course, so they bought some chocolate and since they don't have nothing to use as costumes they are dressing like each other, borrowing their clothes. I love the pandemic creativity. I think it's the only thing I love about all of this.

message 2246: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I turned out the lights except for my desk light in the basement. The doorbell rang twice but I didn't answer. I just checked my Ring history. Both were little girls around 3 years old with their dads. One was my client who lives the next block over. Now I feel really bad.

message 2247: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments We had six kids. They loved the candy shoot. But now we have all left over candy. I want drop it off somewhere. My husband has other plans for it.

message 2248: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad to hear your scavengerr hunt was a success Sandra. Sounds like your daughter and her friends had a good time too.

As we're in the middle of nowhere, we had no one come for trick or treat. I think people were discouraged from going though here.

uncomfytomato | 265 comments Sandra wrote: "My best friend said the same thing. I think I'm going with the paperwhite"

Thats a good decision, I tried the regular kindle (which happens to be the cheapest) it was laggy, terrible quality (in my opinion), I had it exchanged since I originally ordered paperwhite, I think the 300 ppi is important since I've seen both.

Buying kindle was the best decision I've ever made. I don't have to buy physical copies online and pay expensive shipping to middle east. Just buy it on kindle and we are done! Yay~
