Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thanks Cherie. Found him and subscribed.

I did order beekeeping for beginners, beekeeping for dummies and the beekeeper Bible and all 3 books showed up today. Don't quote me on the titles they're definitely close to what I called them. Unfortunately they all have pictures , which I nice except it's hard for me to actually read the book if you distract me with pictures and captions.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments About the only thing I've learned is this time of year everyone bundles the hives for winter and it's into spring before obviously we get warm enough for the bees to get active so I kind of picked a good time of year to educate myself and decide if it's something I want to pursue.

I think there's a bee lady at the local extension office if I recall. I think I tried to get ahold of her once as I'd trapped some form of hornet or something. Was some mutant looking thing. Probably one of those dog gonned murder hornets lol. If I recall she never called me back so my faith in her as a source of knowledge is not real high

message 2153: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments That will give you a chance to read all three books over the winter and be ready to fire up a hive in spring.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So you could get the complete 7 book set on audible for a single credit of the Chronicles of Narnia. I've got an hour left and I don't know if it's the way the narrator says it or what but this sentence about testing the trees up by the roots and crunching them like sticks of rhubarb is cracking me up.
First who even compares something to crunching like a stick of rhubarb. Second. I think it's the way the narrator emphasizes the word rhubarb. I listened to that sentence like 10 times. It's just too funny to me

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments This is just weird! I just tracked books for Beth and Katrisa in the annual challenge. Beth commented that the last 3 books she reported were 288 pages long. I went from Beth's thread to Katrisa's, and her latest book was 288 pages long!

Halloween is coming folks!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments The big thing they teach you here, Travis, is to get a bee buddy. And then see if you can do an inspection or two with them before getting your own hive. My brother's friend for example has had me over to help her with her hives and it gave me the confidence to go "I could do that!". Particularly as she got stung and I didn't lol

Here where I am sometimes you have to put some coreflute in winter in for insulation. But I have no idea what you would need to do with your temperatures and weather! Which is why you want a local buddy. Here I have access to great books and blogs and groups about bees, but they are up north, or on the coast, or other places that don't have our climate. Locals are so much more help.

Good luck!!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here Kristie. Mine is late March, we were 1.5 weeks into lockdown on my birthday this year.

Margo | 11629 comments Travis, I hope all goes well with you. The huge majority of tests are negative but you can't take chances with your health. At the very least it should stop your wife nagging ;-)

I managed to get my flu shot today :-) I was relieved as my uncle got his PET scan appointment through for next week and as it's such a busy hospital - I'm afraid of bringing a little something home!

It's weird but if this is as sick as I get I'd just as soon be popping over to the covid chat saying I'm positive

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I heard the other day if you read literary fiction science now says it can make you a better human being. People who read literary fiction over time feel more connected to people and develop more empathy. No other genres give the effect.

Horror too! LOL! One of my all time favourite quotes about friendship comes from Stephen King's It.

"Maybe there aren't any such things as good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you're hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they're always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that's what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their houses in your heart."

Actually, I think author has just as much effect as genre.

message 2170: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments I thought the science said reading any fiction improves empathy? It has something to do with interactions in the books and being privy to the characters thoughts and emotions.

Don't talk about xmas - we're in lockdown till 1st December 😱 Shops can only sell essential items so no toys, clothes, dvds etc. Santas worst nightmare!

Pete tells me that in Wales, shops weren't allowed to sell sanitary towels or tampons. On what planet are they not essential?

I use cotton pads to do my face cream, so I can wash them, I use blocks of hand soap, for my hear I have a shampoo bar, I go to a zero waste store to buy cookies and stuff...Even my toothpaste tube and tootbrush are not made from plastic.

There was a miscommunication with supermarkets. Toiletry aisles were cordoned off. But that meant you fouldn't buy sanitary products either. Govermment came out and said that wasn't right.

But yeah, we have a tampon tax here I believe. Or at least we used to.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Although Trick or Treating wasn't cancelled in my area, I'm not planning to take my kids. I don't think it's safe and it is an unnecessary risk. They weren't as disappointed as I was expecting (they are getting used to prohibitions I guess :/ ) but still I want to do something special for them. Actually something particularly special for being so good. So I'm planning a spooky scavenger hunt around the house and backyard. The treasure is gonna be the candy, of course, but we'll also have a very black chocolate cake decorated with bats, and green jello (my kids are crazy about Jello). I bought small spiders to put inside the green jello. I'm really excited. My 15 years old son is my accomplice.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Today was an amazing day. My husband and I came into some money, It was expected but we didn't realize how much to expect.

We will pay off our mortgage first. We will donate 50,000 to the theater community. We are donating another 50,000 to a research foundation that looks into Lupus.

We will also renew our vows, Once the world opens up, we will renew our vows in Disney World. Their is a chapel that has windows that look onto Cinderella's Castle. The only thing we cant agree on is where to stay. I want stay at the Grand Floridian, It is beautiful You can get a room with a view of the castle.

My husband wants to stay in the Wilderness lodge, Both are nice. I would prefer the Floridian because of the castle view.

We meet tomorrow with a financial advisor. Our life has just become so much easier

message 2195: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Oct 30, 2020 04:18AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We have a Goods and Services Tax here (GST). It's 10% on all non essential goods and services. Milk is GST free, chocolate has 10% on it. Toilet paper is GST free, air freshener has 10%. Condoms and lube are GST free, tampons and pads have 10% as they are "luxury items".

The GST came in when I was in year 11, and it was the first protest I had ever come across. Women from all over the place came and threw tampons at Parliament House. I didn't know people could do that stuff!! Not that it worked, 20 years later it's still there. They keep trying to over turn it, but too many people voting down party lines, and not enough women in parliament.

Which has lead to a great slogan "A woman's place is in the House... and the Senate."

That's just insane. Not the people protesting, but the fact it was introduced in the first place and hasn't changed after so much time. I'm not even sure what it's like here. I'm going to investigate.

edit: lower category, same as food and some other stuff.

message 2199: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19147 comments Renee - That is excellent!

Sandra - I do like the idea of it being a yearly tradition. I think your kids are going to love it.

Rus - That is so crazy that it is taxed as a luxury item. And so wrong. I can't believe that it can't get overturned. I love the slogan.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I am actually completely wrong.

They apparently finally got rid of it as of Jan 2019. It hasn't changed the price, which is why I thought it had failed.

But still, 19 years of that is still archaic
