Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments That's too bad about your neighbor. And the truck driver. Is there any way you can find out if the truck driver has Covid? Do they do any kind of tracing? Maybe the trucking firm would know.

message 2102: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I was thinking about that Janice and I don't know when he went in hospital but I'm thinking maybe they don't have the test results yet. He'd have receipts from everywhere he was so they have a record and someone should contact me if he is positive

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Whatever the case is sad to see such a nice guy in that shape. No matter when you call him he's a guy who is always how are you doing today. What can I do for you. That is no problem. Have a wonderful and blessed day.
Or similar to that is what you get every time you call him no matter what

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Did someone from this group ever start their own beehive. Wondering what resources you used to learn how to set one up

message 2105: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments I have a friend who is an avid beekeeper. She's actually a member of this group, but I don't think she's even lurking. Perhaps there's a beekeeping club in your area that could help you. Even a farmer who has bees would be a good starting place. The beekeepers here are pretty concerned about the challenges to the bee population and are thrilled to help anyone interested in starting up. I'm sure that would be the case in your area as well.

message 2106: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We have a local beekeeper with hives all over yes. I do use chemicals. Which of them if any hurt bees I don't know. I did do some strips of pollinator attractors. I plan to get a few spots where I'll plant pollinator mixes. It's tough when there are some very bad bugs that really do a number on my crops but I need the bees too. We still seem to have a lot of bees around though. I would like to make some buffer strips safe for bees though

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I'm trying to!! I was supposed to have bees this month but the guy isn't returning my calls. I have a very happy, jaunty but incredibly empty beehive at the bottom of the garden.

I did a course with the local beekeeping club, and belong to a Facebook group for help. What info you after?

We've had single use plastic bag banned here for a long time (exceptions for certain businesses i.e. bakeries. It's second nature at this stage. We have a ban on almost all single use plastic packaging coming in a few years and I can't wait. It is soul destroying to see mountains of OUR waste building up in poorer countries.

Travis that is very unfortunate. I hope the trucker will survive but, as you say, his quality of life is bound to go down. I am very happy that my back surgeon was extremely cautious but the risk is there with any surgical procedure and when they go near the spinal cord, all bets are off.

message 2111: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Same here. No plastic bags for years, except for shops like butchers or fishmongers. We were supposed to have a plastic takeaway container, cutlery, straws etc ban here this year. But you know, Covid.

Keep Cups were a massive push here, and were the norm as well. There were libraries set up in cafes that you could check one out and check it in at other places. But then again, covid and only disposables were allowed for 3 months or so.

message 2112: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11629 comments Yeah, they introduced a 25c surcharge here is you don't bring your own cup. It worked very well.

I went to get my flu shot this morning but they'd run out! They also had my appointment down for tomorrow hence no phone call. I a call just now to say they have a shipment coming in on thursday. It is in pretty short supply here.

Quite a few are in my library wish list or are already on my hold list. At least 3 of the links are not bringing me to the right page.

The is only one book that I might vote for.

LOL Renee there was no panic here this time but there is a lot of fraustration. Shops that have mixed product range e.g. they sell grogeries, toys, books, DVD's ect, they have been forced to block off isles of these kind of things and only sell essentials. I couldn't believe my eyes today! I can't make out if it is imposed by the government or is just an agreement between retailers. The government just keep talking about "a level playing field". I bet Amazon is rubbing it's hands together with glee. There is no way people are going to wait 6 weeks to buy pressies - especially Santy stuff. We are all p&%£ed off with them.

I guess I'm going to have to decide now whether to keep on reading them as they come out, or wait until they're all published.

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Today would have been my ex-husband's 70th birthday. I was texting with my son this evening, asking him how he was coping. There was a long pause in the texts. The next text was a picture of Jerry & me together on the ski slopes years ago.

Apparently, my son has a "memory album" widget for iPhone and it randomly sends pictures throughout the day. It acts like a screensaver. He said that he'll be thinking of his dad, and a picture of him would come up. That picture of Jerry and me came up while we were texting about him.

He said it does the same when he's thinking of his uncle Ron who died a couple of years ago. I said, "Wow! I wonder if you'll get a picture of Uncle Ron after these texts." Bang, a few minutes later, there's a picture of Ron.

My son said, "Remind me and I'll help you set up the widget on your phone." Ahhh - no thanks.

message 2124: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11629 comments No, I don't think I'd fancy a magic widget either. Anniversaries are tough enough without that *hugs*

message 2125: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I was thinking you were trying with the bees Rusalka. We're you the one who got the bee hive looking beehive. Lol. Like that makes sense. The conical kind of bee hive that looks more like a bee made it rather than a box style hive?

Woke up feeling a bit meh.had to make a phone call. The sound that came out me was more troll than human. Apparently I done got myself a chest cold

My trucker was positive but they only recommend me getting tested if you've been in contact for 15 minutes or more. I had maybe 5 minutes

I was supposed to go to the Dr on Friday but probably end up cancelling it now due to this cold

message 2126: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

message 2128: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've been trying to get a refund from Air Canada since May, but no luck. They cancelled a flight and refused to give us a refund, only a voucher, even though legally I'm entitled to at least a partial cash refund. I've been very willing to accept vouchers and even made donations for example for concert tickets I couldn't use, but that was for smaller amounts of money, or the companies would still give a refund if you do not use the voucher within a year. Air Canada however is almost €3000 worth of tickets. That's a lot to have in vouchers that will never turn into cash, especially when I have no idea when we'll next have an opportunity to go to Canada.

A few weeks ago after I tried everything I could think of, I asked for legal help, as I'm insured for that. The legal person responded very quickly, and basically sent the same kind of email as my latest one, except with more legal talk in it. And guess what? Only 2 weeks later now, and Air Canada has replied that we will get a full refund. That's even more than we're entitled to. It's not in my bank account yet, but yay!

message 2129: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments Anniversaries and holidays are definitely stressful. So many memories pop up, some good, some not so. I don't think I'd want a widget like that on my phone either.
I've been reading some of the other threads today. I have to shake my head. There must be something toxic in the air. Know that I've always appreciated you and your efforts/guidance. This may be a spa day or at least a "tippler".

message 2130: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Congrats on the job and passing your test Sandra.

Sorry to hear about the trucker Travis. I hope it is just a chest cold you have. If I were you, I'd be pushing for a test.

I hope you and your son are ok today Janice. I can't believe it has already been a year. Anniversaries are hard and I'd definitely be skipping that app.

It was my birthday on Friday. It was a bit boring really with not being able to do much. I did have an Indian takeaway on the towpath with some friends around a fire which was nice. I boight some new waterproof boots, thermals and ski trousers with my birthday so I can spend more time outside, especially if lockdown happens again soon.

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh yeah, goodreads choice awards. Might be worth diggingg out last year's dedicated thread so we can discuss it more there?!

message 2133: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments I voted in one category (historical fiction) because I’ve read some of the nominees. Bu I’ve got lots on my the and there's no chance I’ll have any more read by the end of the year, especially since so many haven’t even been officially published. That shouldn’t really be allowed. Maybe they should change the awards date of the voting to March of the following year to give people the opportunity to read the books.

I had read somewhere that they were supposed to be giving full refunds. I know WestJet will be complying. But I'm not sure about Air Canada. I'm glad that you were finally able to get satisfaction, even though it took legal help.

I was able to get a full refund from Iceland Air for my trip to Norway. As for the cruise, I had only paid my deposit which they've given me a future travel credit for. As far as I'm concerned, I've lost that because it's highly unlikely I'll be going on any cruises in the next year.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I missed you had a cold Travis, after your truckie visit. Hope you're feeling better but just go get tested just in case. You've had contact with a probable case, embrace the nose swab!

message 2137: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Happy birthday Sarah! I love Indian food. The first time I had it was in Scotland. A friend ordered takeaway and I was hooked. :) Sounds like you treated yourself to some lovely prezzies!!

message 2138: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Thanks for the comments. It's much harder for my son. He tried to keep himself busy all day to keep the emotions at bay.

I dreamt about Jerry last night. We were at some family function at his mother's in Calgary. He moved my car and I when I went out, I couldn't find it. For the first time ever, I used the panic button on the fob. LOL! Funny the things we dream.

@Roz - thanks. :) I might just take you up on the idea of having a lazy day. I have some payroll to do, but I might just play after that.

message 2139: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Happy birthday Sarah.

I'm not a fan of memories period lol. I have no disks albums or anything. I have what's in my phone and when I get a new phone all the photos stay with the old phone and go in trash.

Takeaway. I was trying to think the other day what you guys called takeout lol. Pretty sure I came up with every possible option except takeaway

message 2140: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments And since my first post my wife has told me it's usually 8 days from exposure before you'll test positive so since I woke up with a cold on day 9 I'm to get tested. So it looks like you all also agree with her

message 2141: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Travis, I'm glad your wife has you under control already :D but still I want to add my vote. Get tested. If I remember right you often have lung problems in winter, so you might be kind of on the risky side. If you got it you want to know it as soon as possible. I hope it's nothing though.

message 2142: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Happy birthday, Sarah! It is insane that at this point it looks like all of us will have a pandemic birthday after all. This year shouldn't count. We should stay the same age for one more year. It is not like we really "lived" this one.

message 2143: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Peggy, great you are getting a refund! My father also had a ticket to come visit us, but so far they have given him the option of keeping rescheduling it for the future. I works for him because he wants to come as soon as it is possible, although I'm not sure it is a good idea with his underlying health conditions to be around. I guess that spending all the pandemic all by himself at his home is making him eager to come. We agreed we should wait until spring. Let's see how things go. I'm not letting him travel if things are not way better than now.

message 2144: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Wow, happy birthday Sarah 🎉 I knew we were kindred spirits lol mine was on Thursday - and I bought waterproof boots too lol

And, I couldn’t agree more Sandra, this year should not count at all! But, with all of the stress and such, it is more likely to count as two 😞

Travis, I am really glad that you are getting tested. With him testing positive, and the timeline of your symptoms, even if it is “just a cold” the peace of mind will be totally worth it. My best wishes are with you 😊

I completely agree Sandra. It has been one hell of a year and it sshould be written off.

Haha, snap Jenn! I'm looking forward to mine arriving as the towpath is extremely muddy. Happy birthday for Thursday gone.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Travis - nice to hear from you and I am sorry you are sick, but I also agree that you should get tested too.

As for the bees. If you can find a local bee club or group, their advice would be the best for your conditions in your area in NY. I like to watch some You Tube videos by a guy named "Scotty". He and his wife own a nursery, but he is also a bee keeper. His name is Scott Hendriks. I see that his latest was posted two months ago about his new bee yard. I think he is an interesting guy. He also has a wood shop and makes his own hives, etc. His last video is 1 month ago called "Splitting Hive 19". I have not watched him much since last year, so I have some catching up to do. I just watch for fun. I think he lives in Canada, but I cannot figure out how to find out where.
