I saw that too. It must be another change that Goodreads figures we have to have, that nobody wants.

message 152: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Exactly. Goodreads has so many issues (and the app so many bugs) that I don't understand why they are wasting time with things like this one. All the late changes they have made were really unnecessary, and didn't improve the experience at all.

AND I am incredibly surprised how a site and an application owned by Amazon can have so many issues...

Peggy and Kristie: Ciara is 23. She is on the autistic spectrum (what used to be called Aspergers). She doesn't do make-up and cannot understand why people paint their nails LOL

6 years back there was a shortage of psyc professionals in Ireland. Trans is now a hot topic so there's tons of help. To cut a very long story short, she is now under the care of a Psychiatrist who. At our last family session he advised her to return when she has socially transitioned and then they may commence medical transition. Basically to come back when she was living the life.

That was 2 years of therapy ago, with a phycologist with special interest in the field. Myself an Pete are seeing a different phycologist, also with a special interest in trans issues.

Peggy is right, there is very little talk of de-transitioning. This is in part because it is a new phenomenon and in part because it isn't trendy. Not sure about other countries but demand in UK for gender reassignment treatments has shot through the roof in recent years. Even the surgeons/therapists are questioning it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I noticed the ugly yellow boxes yesterday and wondered “why?”. So it is a site thing.
Maybe they are trying to emphasize what books groups are reading for some purpose.

They are using a lot of ugly yellow lately. I was trying to order the new circuit board for my furnace yesterday. Every other box was yellow or pastel green. If the text was black, at least I could read it, but some boxes had pale green or light blue text. I had to update my info and card and my session timed out twice before I got it all done. They are so big on free shipping but I really need the card sooner than the 16th, but I could not figure out how to get it sooner.

Thanks to all of you for your support - it means a lot.

Rusalka, I know some people online who are trans but none in real life unfortunately. You have a very diverse group of friends and family. You are so right - our job is too give her emotional support :-)

message 157: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I can’t edit my previous post, but the “they” was Amazon.

I order very little on-line via Amazon, but the furnace repair company was going to charge me $460 for the same board (plus labor) that I could order myself for $200. I actually ended up paying $157.00. I’m going to install it myself. I already replaced the thermostat. The repair guy was very honest and showed me the steps. He only changed me $69.00 for the service call.

message 161: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm with all the others who have commented Margo. Ciara is lucky to have you all for support. And the therapists there to help her. Things have improved massively. I can't imagine what it would have been like coming out as trans just 15-20 years (which is when I would have been 23-ish). I do think people are more accepting, people understand it better, and there is more help and support around. Don't get me wrong, it still could be a lot better. I hope her journey gets easier now that she has made the decision.

Sorry I've been awol a bit. I had my operation last week and I've been in that weird state of recovering from general anaesthetic. The operation went well. I'm in some pain which is to be expected but recovering well. I didn't feel great for a few days because of the anaesthetic but I think that's out of my system now. At least I don't have to worry that I might fall over if I stand up, can keep food down and think straight. So now it's just the surgery to get over. Whilst I'm improving, I'm not sure I'll be ready to go back to work on Tuesday as planned.

Thanks Rusalka for all the information on organisations to support. Rob and I are going to donate to one of the wildlife ones.

Sarah | 18549 comments Yup, the yellow boxes are awful. It is probably a glitch in the CSS for the site. No designer can surely think that looks good! Haha!

I'm not going to hold my breath. Remember when they introduced the ugly green button and the uproar it created? They just ignored everyone's comments, and now it's a normal part of the site.

message 175: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments It was a number of years back. I don't remember exactly, but I remember the Feedback group just about lost their minds. There was another fru-ha-ha over changing the wording from "To Read" to "Want to Read".

Glad you and husband getting help too. I really feel for you. Parents are people too, but sometimes we feel we have to be all-wise, all-knowing, and able to cope with everything a child throws at us. This quote from After the Flood by Kassandra Montag resonated with me. “Children think we make them, but we don’t. They exist somewhere else, before us, before time. They come into the world and make us. They make us by breaking us first.”

Wow, you really do have super powers, Cherie. Fix the furnace? Easy! I don’t even know what a furnace looks like. The only furnace I know is a demountable (temporary) classroom in February at noon (actually make that 9:00 am) in Brisbane, before air conditioned classrooms became a “thing”.

There's no point in pushing yourself before you're ready Sarah - it will just result in more time off down the line.

Are you all (in the UK) experiencing the storm? It's been raging over us since 8am and we expect it to pass by about 3pm. A lot of rural home without power. Wish we could send some of this rain to Auss!

message 184: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh, the remainder of your storm must be coming our way tomorrow. They're not predicting a lot of rain, but strong wind.

message 185: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments We have really strong winds here and the odd spell of rain so far. It's supposed to get a lot worse here around 4pm. Heavy rain and stronger winds. Then it looks like it will die down a bit tomorrow and then pick up again, a lot worse tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments So good to hear all went well Sarah. Give yourself time. It takes a lot of time for general amnestic to leave your system. I often have problems for weeks with fatigue. I always have sleep problems after. My dream life becomes very exciting. This makes my sleep less restful. Give yourself time to heal

Those ugly yellow boxes are in my other group. It must be a site change.

Whatever happened to the feedback group? Is it gone now?

Quebec is usually not better. We had such a mild winter here until this weekend. I do not think it went below -20 C yet. The BBQs are still outside. Or were until this weekend. We had a snowstorm yesterday. Storm is gone but it is snowing and they call for another 30 cm of the stuff Wednesday.
I guess when we are truly buried, the world will freeze over. We usually have a few weeks with a maximum of - 25C at the end of January, early Feb.

message 197: by Cherie (last edited Jan 13, 2020 04:38PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Jenn and Janice are sending their cold and snow down to us tonight. We have had a very mild spell of just rain, but tonight is dropping below freezing and we are expecting snow, according to the weather forecast.

My car now has a working heater and instrument cluster and is in the parking lot, waiting for me to get off work this evening. My grandson's car is now at the repair shop to figure out why the battery keeps dying and check the brakes. The guys at Les Schwab fixed the flat tire on Saturday and I got the donut swapped out at 8:00am this morning. The rental car is back at Hertz at the Hillsboro Airport. It was like a Monty Python circus swapping three cars around. I got to sit and read for 20 minutes while I waited for the Intel Air shuttle to land and bus us to our campus. I was at work at my desk at 10:09am.
