Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Rob has to work in a city far far away (lol, not really, but it feels that way to us Dutchies) for 3 weeks. It's about a 2-hour drive in rush hour, so a bit much to do every day, as that means he'd have to leave home very early and be home very late. So he's staying in a hotel from Monday till Friday and comes home for the weekend.

On the plus side, that's lots of undisturbed reading time, and I could find something fun to watch on Netflix. On the down side, with covid I'm already home so much, and now I don't even have someone coming home to talk to in the evenings. And I absolutely hate having to go to bed alone.

After the 3 weeks we have a week off, and we're going to the sea for a couple of days. I'm looking forward to that!

message 1911: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11629 comments Poor you Peggy! I also find it hard to go to sleep on my own, I'm so used to Pete being there. It is a plus side of covid for us that there is virtually no foreign travel allowed these days.

I am oftten a sky widow on a Saturday night as he is a keen amateur astronomer and the skys have just become dark enough at this time of year. He is often out on a Saturday night till 4am which gives me great reading potential.

Re Netflix, we watched Enola Holmes last night and I can recommend it as a lot of fun ;-)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Does Pete usually travel a lot for work?

Thanks for the tip! I saw something about Enola Holmes last week and it seems the perfect fit for an evening by myself.

message 1913: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments That's funny because I was teasing my husband the other day saying I hadn't realized how much of the success of this marriage was based on him going to conferences very often. "I need you to go to a conference right now". Lol
I also don't like to go to bed by myself, but I rarely do it since when my husband is not home one (or more) of my kids like to move (uninvited) to my bed.

message 1914: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Sandra! I suppose it's just what you're used too ;-) Rob used to work on Wednesday evenings pre-corona and I liked that. He came home at 9pm, but I liked the few hours to myself once a week. He also has Monday off once every 3 weeks, and pre-corona I used to be at work so he had the whole day and house to himself. Now I'm home (even though I'm in a seperate room), so he says it's not the same as it was before and he misses that too.

When I was a student I lived on my own and it was fine. But after 9 years of living together, you get used to the other person basically always being there.

It's sweet that your kids move to your bed :)

message 1915: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Yes, completely agree. I miss him when he is gone, tbh, but his last conference was last December and it is definitely weird for us. I think it is a more general situation. Since March I haven't had time for myself at all. I think the only exception were the 6 hour drive home after leaving my daughter at college at the begining of the month. I could use some vacations! :)

message 1916: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments I agree Sandra, you start to almost rely on the sanity break their schedule provides. Sean’s been doing shifts for so long I’m definitely used to it, week of days-week off-week of nights-week off, and it starts again. So, for his nights block I might see him for a minute or two in the morning in my work days, and then on the week end he’ll be up @ 2, I feed him, and he’s gone a bit before 5. And before that he did a year and a half in camp, so he was just gone every other week. We just finished a forced week at home waiting for his results, which just reaffirmed that we can never retire together - somebody would likely die 🙄

Not often, he is a real home bird and has to dragged away but there is the odd conference or site visit that has to be done.

message 1918: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Jenn, I actually think we will do fine when retired. I would say that his stress because of work is what drives me crazy (and the last 2 week have been very stressful with cases spiking at the university and one is his students testing positive), and my husband has the worse stress management I've seen. Other than that we enjoy being together, so I expect retirement to be a good time.

message 1919: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Last night I dreamt about next year's challenge. It was pretty detailed in my dream, and I remember thinking even in my dream that I had to remember it, but of course today I've woken up remembering that I had that dream, but no idea of the details..

message 1920: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have missed my monthly trip down to Bournemouth and Rob has missed me going too. He usually watches all the films I don't want to watch while I'm away and I get to read my book in peace. I get a lot of time to myself at the moment when Rob is at work. Rob goes and plays table tennis some evenings too so I get reading time then, although that stopped during covid. He has been doing it again the last couple weeks, making the most of it before restrictions are reintroduced. We enjoy spending time together but it's definitely nice to have your own space too.

I am laughing about all the challenge dreams and wondering. I am more concerned about finishing this year's right now. I'm so slow at reading at the moment, I think also because I've been distracted by drawing.

Sure! You can help me by telling me what kinds of tasks you like. I realized that I resurrect so many - like shoes on the cover, stormy seas, stormy skies. I'm on the equivalent to Card 5 and have 35 to go. *sigh*

message 1927: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments Would these tasks work?
Set in a city that hosted the winter Olympics (need to indicate the year)
Set in a city that hosted the summer Olympics (need to indicate the year)
A book that has a symbol of the Chinese year on the cover (2021 is Year of the Ox)

message 1928: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Some that come to mind:

-Published in the year/decade you were born.
-"light" or "dark(ness)" in the title
-a map on the cover
-picked only for its cover
-a book with an ugly cover
-the last one in a series
-a play
-"life" in the title
-Set in the 60s or 70s
-a book once started but never finished
-set in the future

message 1929: by Cherie (last edited Oct 01, 2020 05:22PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments How about:

- a book by an author whose name is the same as yours - either first or last
- a book by an author whose initials are the same as yours - first and last only
- a book with a cover that is your favorite color
- a book set in your home state if you live in the USA
- a book set in your home province is you live in Canada
- a book set in your home territory if you live in Australia
- a book set in your home country
- a book with your favorite animal on the cover
- a book with the name of your favorite animal in the title (ie: dog, cat, horse, pig, gopher, turtle, fish, etc)
- a biography/autobiography/memoir of a movie star

message 1930: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Thanks for the ideas. I'll keep them in mind. They will need to fit the challenge topic so it might be a bit tricky.

message 1931: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments - Geometrical shapes on cover
- Mode of transportation with 2 wheels on cover
- The cover depicts a scene inside (it's a living room, kitchen, etc)
- The story spans at least 10 (or any other number) years
- The story spans no more than 2 (or any other number) weeks
- Stuffed animal on cover
- Cover is a night scene

It's hard! You've thought of hundreds of tasks over the years already.

Oh dear - advice please!

I was sitting at my dining room table. It was 7am and dark here in the UK. Our dining room is at the front of our house and we have a big bay window that I was facing. OK so far? Good. It starts to get interesting now....

I had opened our curtains and blinds to wave the hubby off to work, got side tracked, sat down and blinds and curtains are still open.

The front of our house overlooks the front of other houses across the street. I looked up and holy batman!! (not batman but you get me).....naked man, in shower, no blind......I can pretty much see everything, (it wasn't pretty tbh)....I wouldn't be complaining if it was something wonderful to look at lol

What should I do?

1. Knock on the door and let them know that they may wish to invest in some blinds

2. Leave it alone and just make sure my blinds are closed or

3. Tell my immediate neighbours so that they can enjoy the show tomorrow morning?

Go!

message 1933: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Haha Katie. Perhaps he left the blind open on purpose for you?! ;-) I think I'd go for option 2, but maybeeeee alsoo tag on option 3. Haha. What a way to wake up for you Katie.

message 1935: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Katie!!! I'm laughing so hard right now.

We have a similar situation at work, where we can see 'ugly naked guy' from Friends in the building across the street. We can thankfully only see him from quite a distance, but still.

Not sure what the best solution in your case would be!

ROTF. Ever talk to him? Because if you get to know him this well, you should know his name. No tattoo? That would be a easy way to start the conversation: "Hey" Could I know your name? I am tired of referring to you as the guy with the snake tattoo on its lower back."
Sorry, I'm being silly, Not enough sleep... But honestly I probably would leave it alone. Unless I do happen to really talk to him and if he does not seems the type to take offense.

message 1938: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Oct 02, 2020 07:28AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Katie, if you weren't married I would say invite him for a drink this weekend, but I guess you will have to just leave the blinds closed.

message 1939: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments In addition to Esther's 4th option, if you feel bad for him but don't want to embarass him, you could put a note in his mailbox. Anonymously or not, that's up to you ;-)

message 1940: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments I’d go over, introduce yourself, and tell him that you are listing your house and may have viewings at odd times, so if he wouldn’t mind showering with his blinds closed until it sells . . .
Treat it like a PSA for him, and if he blows it off you know it’s on you to block him out, or enjoy the show lol

I agree with this. We have borderline blind issues in my house, and I was thinking about what I would like if my neighbours coped an eyeful. I think a sufficiently vague, anonymous note suggesting that specific blinds get closed would work. Mainly as I wouldn't be embarrassed when I saw the neighbour. I would just be mildly anxious with all my neighbours, and wondering who had seen me naked. But ignorance could be bliss lol

What a wake up to your morning! Better than coffee!

message 1942: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm pretty sure a couple canoeists have caught me getting dressed in the mornings. I often open the curtains wet side so I can see rather than puttting thee light on. You can heqr an engine if a boat is coming so you can get out the way easily especially as they don't move fast. But those canoeists are silent and can be quick when they want to be. Definitely been caught out. Hhahah.

message 1943: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Wow! That was a different way to say "good morning". LOL! That reminds me when we were in St Maartens and going on a ski-boat tour. Apparently, we would be passing a nude beach. The tour guide said that he would point it out when we passed but not to get too excited, "Naked isn't always pretty", was his comment.

I probably would do option 2 & 3. And thank my lucky stars there are no windows in my bathroom.

LOL we took a wrong turn in St Martin and ended up on the nude beach. Although I've gotten more of an eyeful here at the nude "beach" along the river here. That's more of a shock as you just walk through the beautiful bush and stumble into a lot of nude, leathery men.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I'm actually going to be building a screen this long weekend as the neighbour has cleared all her fence that gives a clear view from our bedroom to her back door. And I don't like having to dive every time I'm getting dressed and she wants to empty a bucket (why does she have so many buckets? Why are they in her house?).

Anyway, here's to a whole heap of Hardenbergia's blocking the bucket lady :P

Kristie | 19148 comments Oh no, Katie! lol

Sarah, that's too funny. As long as you don't have any repeat offenders. haha

Very true, Janice. When we were younger, we went camping on the weekends and we had to pass a nudist colony on the way. We couldn't see anything, but they had a big sign advertising at the end of the road out front. My dad used to put on his directional and pretend we were turning in. We used to be mortified and think it was hilarious at the same time. Dad humor... lol I'm sure plenty of other dads did the same thing.

That's a pretty option, Rusalka!

Lots of people with nudity / neighbor issues! lol

message 1947: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments That will make a lovely screen, Rusalka.

Kristie, Dad humour... yeah. This is now politically incorrect, but my dad would always tell me that he was going to trade me off to the Indians for a canoe. Oh, and any cow in the field was called a tractor, and any tractors became cows. Really Dad?? Now, I'm just a cross for him to bear, especially when I'm beating him at crib.

My father-in-law used to tell me that I was as pretty as a picture, I ought to be hung.
