The first badge is the easiest to get because there are so many tasks available to choose from. If you are a fast enough reader to get 12 books finished in 3½ months, then you should definitely go for it.

Another benefit is that even if you aren't able to read enough for a badge this year, you will get the feeling for how it works and know what to expect next year.

It is a bit of work to get started, but it is also a lot of fun. :)

It really is, Kristie. As grateful as I am for the rain to clear out all of the smoke in our area, it can actually be a bad thing for the areas hit by the wild fires, if there is too much.

Hopefully, your sinkhole is not too bad and your flooding is relieved soon.

Kristie | 19182 comments Peggy wrote: "Lol Sandra, for me it also always happens in september that I get curious about next year ;-)"

Usually I make it until some time in October before I really start wondering. I think it's the fall air and decorations, feeling like the holidays are starting and the new year is around the corner. So apparently, holidays = thoughts about the yearly challenge for me. lol By December I am ready to start a major gophering. I'm always conflicted between wanting to gopher for the new challenge and trying to finish up a badge for the current challenge.

Thanks, Cherie. We are all good here now. We had some time without rain finally and they patched the sinkhole up really quickly.

I really hope your area is under control soon. It seems like this has been a terrible year for out of control wildfires.

Sarah | 18550 comments We've had a bit of a heat wave this last week which has been wonderful. Great to have some sun before autumn sets in properly. We had a bbq a couple days back with some very potent punch. It was good fun. I am starting my yoga up again as i'm struggling to sleep at the moment. I think it's becuse i'm so inactive.

message 1857: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Heatwave here too. It was 34 C this week, 3 days above 30. Insane temps for mid-september. Next few days will also be warmer than usual, with around 26C.

Hope the yoga helps! I'm okay if I skip one week, but I really notice it both mentally and physically when I don't go for 2 weeks.

Yes. He reads well and clearly. I have friends that want to improve their English skills and were asking about something they could listen to practice. This is perfect.

Funny. I have a bunch of books on hold that do not fit this year challenge. I was just telling myself, should I wait? they may fit next year. I wonder what will the challenge be...

message 1860: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I usually start thinking the same towards the end of the year. I never know what to read. I'm always afraid I read a book 'just because' only to find out a week later that I should have saved it for the challenge.

message 1862: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11267 comments Every year is the same to me. I'm anxious to know about the next yearly challenge from September to November. Then in December, when it is finally posted, I force myself to think only in the current challenge so I can read the last books for another badge... Last year I got my second badge on December 24th!

message 1869: by [deleted user] (new)

I've decided to give it a go. I can read about 40 to 50 pages an hour so not a super fast reader. I think for me, it is about making the time to read which I am wanting to do. I watch far too much TV in my spare time lol.

I hope yoga helps Sarah. Now that the nights are getting a bit cooler, I have been sleeping a bit better. I love the sunshine and heat during the day but prefer the cool of an evening.

Go! Half of the fun is looking for books. Consider it as training for the 2021 challenge. :)

It's been on my mind too but I didn't want to bring it up this early in the year ;-)

Katie, I also started my first yearly challenge well into the year. It will be fun!

message 1872: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59953 comments The trick, Katie, is to read books that will be quick. You need to meet the 175 page limit, so aim for books that are 175-300 pages. Just watch the rules about ebooks and audiobooks. Chunksters over 500 pages will slow you down.

Got it! I don't have a lot of books to choose from so I guess I may just have to buy a few or 12!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes they are! They always seem a bit clumsy, I can easily identify ;-)

I got some happy news! My sister is pregnant again, and she's expecting another boy!

The first few weeks were quite scary as after the first ultrasound she was sent to the emergency apartment. The person doing the ultrasound (sorry, I don't really know the English names for all this) couldn't hear a heart beat, thought it might be an ectopic (?) pregnancy, and saw something on her uterus or ovaries that shouldn't be there. She was saying all this out loud and said my sister had to go to the emergency ward immediately. Obviously she was totally stressed and freaking out.

In the hospital she was told she was only 5 weeks and it wasn't even possible to hear a heartbeat yet, and that the 'thing' that was on the ultrasound was only an innocent cyst. She was asked to come back in 2 weeks and when they did the ultrasound then, there was a heartbeat and everything was as it should be. Still, some scary 2 weeks and not a nice start of her pregnancy.

Jeez, sounds like they let an unqualified person loose on the ultrasound. That was very stressful for your poor sister Peggy!

Kristie | 19182 comments Peggy wrote: "I got some happy news! My sister is pregnant again, and she's expecting another boy!"

I was up really late last night and must be pretty tired. I initially read this as 'bad news' instead of 'happy news' and had to go back to reread it. lol Congratulations to your sister! You must be excited to be an auntie again.

What an awful technician. I agree that they seem to be very unqualified.

I don't like when medical people don't tell you anything and send you for more testing. I know they are trying to reduce worry, but I think it's worse because your imagination runs wild. However, this person seems to have gone full swing in the opposite direction causing unneeded anxiety. I'm glad the additional testing showed no problems and your sister can now relax a bit and enjoy her pregnancy.

message 1884: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59953 comments Woohoo! Congrats again Auntie Peggy. I'm happy that your sister finally got good news, but those 2 weeks must have been nerve wracking. Waiting is always the worst.

@Sandra: I think he's still a little too young to fully understand. If you ask him 'what's in mommy's tummy?' he'll say 'a baby!!!', but when they talk to him about it sometimes he responds to it, but other times he asks if he can watch a video on youtube ;-)
