Glad you're home and it all went well! Rest up, don't push yourself, and check in when you're feeling better. We'll be here :D
Sorry to hear though it's taken a bit more out of you than expected.

Kristie | 19166 comments I've gotten a lot less friend requests from creepy men that answer my screening question with you have a beautiful smile or you look like an angel, etc now that I changed my profile pic too. Typically I just decline those friend requests and they go away. Like Rusalka, if I get a request from a guy who only has attractive female friends or people he's following I'm not interested. This isn't a dating site!

Glad your surgery went well, Margo. I hope you recover and your pain goes away quickly.

message 1803: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4524 comments @ Margo - Speedy recovery. I had a similar surgery in 2006. Listen to your body - it knows what you need - rest and take little walks. It was the best thing that I did. I have been pain free for over 14 years, but it does get a little achy when I overdo exercise.

I've gotten less requests since I have people answer a question. If I don't recognize them from a group I'm in, I delete them. I am also thinking about changing my pic - again.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Look. It's just a burden we have when we are all such an attractive bunch lol

Sarah | 18550 comments Great tto hear the op went well. Sorry you''re in paain and the recovery is not quite how you expected it to be. Wishing you a speedy recovery. See you around soon. Taake it easy!

message 1806: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I have my profile set to private. I also had some creepy friend requests. I figured it was men being men.

The thing that made me change to private was an author who was upset with rating books with out writing a review. I use the site the way it works for me. I got more then one request from this author. I changed my setting to private and have not looked back

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Renee wrote: "The thing that made me change to private was an author who was upset with rating books with out writing a review."

This one really bothers me. Authors should not be harassing readers for not doing things they think would benefit them more. Same as readers should not be harassing authors if they don't like a read or if they are taking too long to write something. Sorry that happened to you Renee.

But yes, I think the point that is important out of all of this, that there are lots of options for people if you are experiencing things like this that you don't enjoy. You are choosing to engage with people here, and on your terms. So don't feel guilty - block people or change your info or how much you share.

To quote Captain Planet - "The Power is yours!"

Remember we here at YLTO have your back, so always let us know if you are experiencing things like this. Happy to help with advice or getting you in touch with Goodreads groups who can help.

message 1808: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to hear that Bach. Unfortunately, social media can be a very scary place at times. I think some people believe that, because they are behind a computer, they can say and act however they like but in person, they would not dream of it. Instagram can be a minefield. I don't have an account anymore but when I did I had to set my profile to private as I was receiving requests from guys who quite clearly were not interested in me for the content I was posting.

Glad to hear your op went well Margo. Just need to take it slow and steady.

message 1809: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments I agree with all the ways of filtering friend requests you mentioned above. Another thing I pay attention to is how many friends that person has. If he/she has more friends than books in his/her shelves I ignore the request. It is a good indicator of what that person is doing in GR, which it is a social media for readers after all.

message 1810: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Oh and one more. Sometimes when you go take a look at their profile you find out at this person requested friendship to a lot of other people at the same time he/she requested it to you. You can see 20 posts inn a row in the profile "X is no following Y", or "X is now friends with Y". That is someone fishing friends.

message 1811: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I agree, Sandra. I filter out all of the requests based on who, what, and how many too!

Margo - I hope you feel better soon! Take it easy on your recovery. Rushing things are not good. Just read/listen and relax. We are all glad you are home. Thanks for letting us know. ;o)

I've been at my computer for 2.5 hours already. I have started up Word and had a 30 minute video call with a student. I feel like this is going to be one of those super productive days. Not.

Roz | 4532 comments Cherie, I know you live close to Portland Oregon. Have you been impacted by the fires?

message 1822: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Roz - there are fires around us, but none close to where I live. We are getting the smoke from all sides though. The air quality is so terrible! I have co-workers and friends in a couple of the evacuation areas. My sister lives in southern Oregon, about 30 miles from where the fires are in Medford. She is not in danger but the little towns around her area have been decimated.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I'm glad you and your family are okay so far, Cherie! Hope your friends are too. Been thinking of you all day so glad Roz got you to check in. I agree with Roz, it's far far to similar to what we had all summer over here on the West Coast there. I am so sorry you're going through it too and I hope all goes well. Let us know!!

Grainne Coughlan | 1298 comments @Cherie I am glad to hear that you and your family are safe. It’s terrible that there is so much smoke. It makes it difficult to breath. It’s been like that here too when the air pollution from manufacturing here in Asia. There’s so many chemicals in the air. It can’t be good. It’s improved a lot since Corona.

Kristie | 19166 comments I’m not sure where the best place to put this is, but I wanted to pass some sad news along. This was posted on Rachel Caine’s fan page on Facebook a few hours ago.

~~~~~~~~
Dear friends ...
Last week, something happened that meant a big, dramatic shift in my life: I failed out of my last cancer trial. I just wasn’t well enough to even start it.
Unfortunately, that left me with only two options: do another round of extremely brutal chemo (for which I was really too weak, and for which the odds of a positive were less than 10%) ... or to move to hospice care.
Now, if you’d don’t know a lot about hospice, mostly it’s done in-home. Your doctor transfers your care to a hospice doctor and team who is more about making sure your home is safe for you, and provides you with medical equipment you need (I now have a shiny new cane and an adjustable toilet seat, beat that!).
I also have a team of nurses, including an every-other-day wound care nurse, supervising nurse, counselors, people to help me with everyday tasks that have become hard.
But hospice is not treatment. It makes sure that if I need pain relief, I get it. It helps me with oxygen if that’s required.
But I’m not getting better.
We don’t know how long this process will last; it’s absolutely unknown. The tumors will grow unchecked, and eventually spread. But we have support now, and 24-hr-on-call nurses. My doctor gave an estimate of six months, but it could be faster or longer. One day at a time is how it has to go now.
We have a ton of wonderful friends, but unfortunately this is a point where friends can’t do very much. We’re trying to stay in touch, but with COVID and my up-and-down health I’m not great at responding to messages, texts, etc. But will try.
I’m trying to feel more at peace, and I think I’ll get there but WOW is it breathtaking how fast life can shift under your feet, and your sense of control and ... well, future ... can spin away from you like your house in a tornado.
I’m going to try to keep writing when I feel up to it. I’ll do my best to keep you updated as things progress.
Most of all, I love you all. My husband Cat and I thank you for being part of our lives, you’ve made the world infinitely kinder, cooler, better, and truly special.
Love,
Rachel Caine
message 1828: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)
Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh that's not good. I saw something that looked vaguely positive health wise from her a few days ago, that's sad it's not the case. I don't follow her (I haven't gotten to her books on my shelf yet) but a lot of authors I do retweet her updates.
Cancer is a jerk.
message 1829: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Sep 16, 2020 07:00AM) (new)
Kristie | 19166 comments I don't follow her either, Rus. Someone else posted it to a group I was in. I didn't even know she was sick. That's so sad. Yes, cancer is a jerk.
Also, I edited the above comment to delete her PS. I feel kind of bad doing so, but it was promotional, so I cut it out. Basically, she said if you want to support her you can buy her books with links.
message 1830: by Peggy (new)
Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's very sad indeed.
I don't think I know her.
message 1831: by Renee (new)
Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I will keep her in my prayers . It is always sad when this time comes for someone. I wish her as peace
message 1832: by Sarah (new)
Sarah | 18550 comments That is sad. I haven't read any of her books I don''t think, although I'm aware of her.
message 1833: by Janice, Moderator (new)
Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I saw that post this morning. She's been posting about her journey through cancer on Twitter and for a while it sounded very hopeful. I have Stillhouse Lake to listen to and I would go ahead and buy the other books in the series, but I wanted to wait until I'd read the first book to see if I like it. I also have her first book in the Great Library Series, Ink and Bone.
message 1834: by Kristie, Moderator (new)
Kristie | 19166 comments I've read all of her Stillhouse Lakes books. I wouldn't necessarily put them on my favorites list, but I did really enjoy them. I liked the potential direction she was setting the series up to go in. The newest in the series is completed and due out in March 2021.
I haven't read her Ink & Bone series, but I own the first one on Audible.
Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I don't have a Kindle account and I am not in the US or UK or wherever to see where this deal is.
But Kevin Hearne just posted on his instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CFPBWXmA2Dw/ that the first of all of Rachel Caine's series are on sale.
I have Ill Wind on my shelf.
That's great. Cherie. Glad the weather has decided to help you out finally.
Recently I was talking to my mother and found it interesting that we had been getting rain every day. We were having issues with a lot of flooding and even a sinkhole near by. We were asked to stay home and only travel when necessary due to roads being closed and hazardous. She was having a drought and had water restrictions put in place. Crazy how much control the weather has over us.
I think he decided to start that when the shelter in place stuff started. I remember him talking about it and Neil Gaiman saying he could use his books. I never checked it out though. I bet it's good.
That's such good news! Enjoy! There is nothing like the first rain after horrific heat and encroaching fires.
message 1847: by [deleted user] (new)
I love it when it rains. I am very glad to hear it is now raining for you Cherie.
So, I am sitting here wondering if I should joint the yearly challenge even though the year is almost over....I see I would need to read 12 books to get a badge. Should I jump in??
message 1848: by Peggy (new)
Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments YES!!!
Yeah, you should :) it's great fun, you'll have plenty of book choices (in the beginning many books will fit), and you'll know what you're getting into for the 2021 challenge.
message 1849: by Sandra, Moderator (new)
Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Katie, Yes! Yearly challenges in this group are like anything you have seen before. We are all addicted to them. Actually last week when I was making reading plans for the last months of this year I was wondering if Janice has something in mind for 2021. I didn't wanted to ask since it is only September, but I considered October was appropriate enough for asking. :D
message 1850: by Peggy (new)
Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Sandra, for me it also always happens in september that I get curious about next year ;-)
