That's good.

Sarah | 18550 comments @Kristie - I have heard that there have been quite a few false negatives. Theey did give a % but I can't remember what it was. It was higher than I would have expected it to have been though.

message 1353: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments When my husband and I had the covid virus we both lost our sense of smell and taste. My husband more so than me. That started back in March. It's mostly come back for me but it's taking more time for him. We both had full blown virus symptoms. If there was a symptom, I had it. We've both had the antibody test. I came back positive for antibodies but he came back negative. His doctors think it's probably because certain medications he's taking that can compromise the test. Either way if the test is to see if we had the virus, it's kind of moot, isn't it? We know we had it. I've also heard that about 50% of the test may be falsely reporting results. There seem to be several different tests out there, some more accurate than others. It's probably good to have an antibody test either way if you didn't have blatant symptoms since some people are asymptomatic or mistake their symptoms for something else.

message 1355: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sorry to hear you were both hit so hard with the virus Roz. Interesting though that it's taking so long for both of you to get full sense of smell and taste back. I thought it was only a matter of a days/weeks (according to some other people who experienced this), not months. Now I definitely want Rob to get the antibodies test. If he tests positive I expect I would test positive too, but then both of us are completely asymptomatic or non-symptomatic. Also, around the time Rob must have been contagious there was no talk yet of isolating so he must have been in close contact with his colleagues, none of which have had any symptoms either.

I hope you'll both be back to full health soon!

message 1356: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments That's weird, Peggy. Hope you get an answer. But I agree, it's a major listed symptom here, particularly for asymptomatic people. Personally, i'd get tested.

Here we are testing everyone who has symptoms. You can go to a drive though here, they stick a swab up your nose to the back of your throat while sitting in the car, and then send you on your way. My brother, who had symptoms and came back clear, is being tested every time he goes on a new defence force base. He is super happy about that, not.

Although, 31 days here in Canberra since we've had a case. So you know.

message 1359: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments @Peggy, I hope they find an answer for Rob. It would be great to have him tested for antibodies so you not miss anything else that might be happening with him thinking it is the virus.

message 1360: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Also, I don't believe we are doing this antibody test. Do you guys not have access to a test that tells you you currently have the disease? That's what we are doing over here.

Kristie | 19148 comments Rusalka wrote: "Also, I don't believe we are doing this antibody test. Do you guys not have access to a test that tells you you currently have the disease? That's what we are doing over here."

We have both, but I don't think the antibody test is readily available here. The antibody test is useful for people that think they may have had the virus before the test was available to them. I think people will need to take the antibody test before getting the vaccine once it is available.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Kristie wrote: "We have both, but I don't think the antibody test is readily available here. The antibody test is useful for people that think they may have had the virus before the test..."

Fair enough, thanks. It sounded from the conversation that this was the major form of testing. i misunderstood, and was thinking that sounded like the most counter-intuitive way to stop the spread.

"We can tell you 4 weeks ago you had the disease which infected 50 more people on average over those 2 weeks who are on averaging infecting 50 more people each as we speak. Have a nice day."

message 1363: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree, the antibodies test is only useful when you need to know if it could be the cause of other symptoms you have. Loss of smell could be due to many other things, especially in Rob's case, so it would be good if the cause can be determined for certain.

If it was corona this is a an after effect, I don't think he can currently be tested for it if it started 3 months ago and the virus is out of his system but did some serious damage to his nose that he's still suffering from.

Testing for everyone was only made available here on Monday, 323.000 people called the phone number on that day, and loss of smell is not listed as a valid symptom to get tested.

We'll just wait and see for next week.

Sarah | 18550 comments I spent some time going through my tbr and moving books to my maybe list. I've owned some books for a while and always pass them over. Especially ones I got as freebies. Feels better already. I miss the website that kept track of your series. So I added books i own to my 'current series' shelf but I couldn't face going through my wishlist doing that. Maybe I need to make a list somewhere of my current series that I want to continue

message 1366: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I should clean out my shelves too Sarah.

I used that website too and made a list in the beginning of the year of series in my thread in the member zone section. It's good to have some overview.

message 1367: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We can get either the antibody or the other test here. As part of NY opening a certain percentage of the population has to be tested so anyone can walk in and get whichever test they want. At least where I live you can

message 1368: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments I need to clean off my shelves too, but it seems so overwhelming. The other day I found a book on my TBR that fit a challenge task, but then found out the book isn’t available to me. I need to go through and remove books like that as well as books I’m no longer interested in.

message 1369: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59905 comments Sooooo - maybe we could shift the Corona talk back to it's own thread? Maybe it's not such an issue now, but we had separated the discussion out so people could avoid it if they found it stressful.

message 1377: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well I'm feeling pretty good today. Had one heck of a Facebook rant last night. I'm no English major so probably me writing for half hour came out as a rambling disorganized mess but that's ok. Was very therapeutic to me. And I tried to hit as many possible trigger points as possible. From telling white people to just own the fact that they are racist by being born white in this country, to keeping religion out of politics since our forefathers gave freedom of religion, then made a separation of church and state and then like dumbasses have us say one nation under god to completely contradict both the separation and the freedom of religion. Hit on cops. Black lives matter. The media . The fact we're all puppets to a higher power that wants this nation divided in order to control it and on and on. I tried to hit a lot of topics for 2 reasons. Not focusing on one to single anyone out. Better to piss everyone off. My feed has become a diarrhea of Bs. People don't even know what they post I think or they'd notice the contradictions. How do you post like 10 things that are clearly racist and then post something saying everyone needs to love each other. It's because no one stops to notice their own prejudice. My aunt is one of the most racist people on Facebook yet for my entire life is vouch that she doesn't have a racist bone in her body. I'm not sure she gets half the memes she posts. Goes on and on. Social media is toxic.

Of course I see a bunch of people have commented, as expected, but I've decided I'll wait . Could be people agreeing or disagreeing. Doesn't matter. The therapy of just venting is kind of wasted if I jump right back into the trenches to argue with people.

At the end I admitted to being guilty of every single thing I've said at some point in my life because I'm a flawed human being like every single human being

If I recall I said can we stop with the diarrhea of the mouth already. Sometimes just sit back and listen and don't voice your opinion. Just think about what has been said. Good luck isn't social media a place for diarrhea of the mouth. You go on it to find all the people who disagree with you to argue with them just because you're bored. Seems to be the main purpose of it from what I've witnessed.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments To be honest I thought I had some good thoughts though. I quoted rage against the machine - they don't gotta burn the books just remove them. And explained they didn't even remove the books. They gave us smartphones and social media and 24 he propaganda networks to control us. A lot of people don't read or try to educate because the glowy thing in their hand

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Peggy your husband is in my prayers. The loss of smell and taste was one of the first symptoms we were warned about. I hope it is some other cause. Prayer cant hope for either reason.

I feel sad for my country. This has been a wake up. Something needs to change. The thing i feel sad about is violence is what it takes to make us listen.

Love the idea of a curb side service for Library books. I wonder how many people will use it? I definitely would. It would be so easy to reserve books online then wait for the delivery. Not that I’m lazy or anything! Tee hee.

You pull into a numbered parking spot. You text the library. They bring the books out and place them in your trunk

It gets you books but i miss talking to the librarians

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments That is how is going to work at my library, Renee. I certainly will miss talking to the librarians, and my kids keep asking when we can come back to play at the library with other kids. Hopefully it won't take long.

Sarah | 18550 comments There have been 3 days of BLM protests here in the UK in so many cities. The ones in Manchester and London yesterday were massive. There was one in Bristol today and a statue of Edward Colston, who was a slave trader, was toppled. I have no idea why it was still standing in 2020!! Sure he did some good things for the city but the bad outweighed the good. I'm pleased it's gone.

message 1390: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59905 comments We had a BLM protest here in GP too. They report that about 1000 people participated.

message 1391: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments There were 10000 in Bristol, 15000 in Manchester and I'm not sure how many in London. They were the largest ones here I think. The UK is definitely not innocent when it comes to Racism. Hence the large turnouts.

message 1392: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Jun 08, 2020 04:35AM) (new)

Jayme | 4520 comments We have had protests in my town of Virginia Beach. The first night it became violent with looting - 38 businesses damaged, so we have been on curfew for the past 5 days. It angers me because the looting deflects from the importance of the protests and gives Trump all the "ammunition" he needs to justify bringing in military troops. November 2nd can't get here fast enough.

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments We've got protests in various cities in Belgium too. The one last weekend ended with riots. I feel warm for all the support that people from different countries in Europe give to the people in America. I hope this time it can make a change.
I have my Japanese axam this evening. I'm so nervous. I know it's only a language course, but it's online and it's pretty weird.

message 1394: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We have many protests here too, not only in support of the US but also to protest against racism here. It's not the same as in the US, but definitely exists. They have been peaceful, although in some cases there were so many people it was impossible to keep the 1.5m distance and now there's all kinds of political debate about that.

That has been the concern here too. People who attended the protests are now discovering that they are COVID positive and the CDC believe it's going to set off a second wave earlier than predicted.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I loved the toppling of the Edward Colston statue from here. I get that without him and the slave trade, Bristol wouldn't be the place it is today. So that should be acknowledged. But glorifying or commemorating the man I'm not on board with. Sounds like the mayor is on board. A lot of our statues here need to be in the sea as well.

We've had massive protests here too. Not just in solidarity for the US, which is very much felt, but also in support of our Indigenous communities here. We had a Royal Commission into Indigenous Deaths in Custody that finished in 1991. Since then, over 430+ Indigenous people have died in prison or police custody, and no one has been charged here for any of them. Indigenous people in Aus make up round 3% of the Aus population, but 20% of the prision population. We've all gotten very incensed, and rightly so, about the American situation, but it needs to be acknowledged we are in a glass house here with big stones.

I haven't watched it yet, but apparently Trevor Noah has a great video the other day about the looting, and how it's a reaction tot destroying the social contract. Looting really is a group reaction to unparalleled situations with heightened emotions. I mean, you shouldn't do it, but if you are so worked up about not being in society or society gives no stuffs about you at all, and you are in a crowd of emotions and adrenaline, I get how it happens. There isn't logic, it's mob mentality in a situation where the perception is "you don't care about us at all, we don't care for your rules or your so called "society"".

This all said, this is all my white girl thoughts. There are much more informed and articulate people than me who live this experience everyday we should be listening too. Stay safe everyone. And if you go to protest (fair enough!!!), wear a mask and socially distance if you can!

message 1400: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I agree completely Rusalka about the statue. I think it's going to be removed feom the harbour and put in the local museum where they already hhave a lot of info on the slave trade and previous race riots. Yesterday will go down in history in Bristol. There are other buildings named after Colston, one of which is a concert hall, andd they have said they will be changing the name by the end of summerr when they reopen after a refurb. People have campaigned for years to have the statue removed so its good that its gone. Mad that news about it has travelled all around the world. I didn't expect it to get as much coverage as it has.

Yes I thought the protests would be large in Australia based on the little I know about the situation there.

I've not waatched the video you mention but Rob has. I was another video by a woman who quoted him about the breaking of a social contract though. Makes sense.

Rob and I just bought one off the great courses on aidible about the rise and fall of tthe British empire that we're going to listen to. We know so little about our own history here. Kids are only taught about the two world wars in any depth and there is so much more.
