Margo | 11628 comments It is beautiful here today. Sun shining, daffodils blooming - yes, they survived the storm! But we're expecting high winds and heavy rain tomorrow.

It's amazing how much effect the weather has on mood. For the last few days I've really been down in the dumps but today feels hopeful :-)

message 452: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I struggle with my mood with poor weather too, Margo. I need sunshine or after a couple of days I have no motivation.

message 453: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, weather definitely affects my mood to.
Our winter has been very atypical. Not very cold and very little snow.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Are you a teacher Bash? What do you teach?

I read mainly in English too. Not all books I'm interested in get translated to Dutch, and I prefer to read in the original language anyway.

It's sunny here too, but still cold and windy. Sun improves my mood too!

I'm an I.T teacher, yeah thats true about translated books, If I can speak the language I will always go for the original.

and most books aren't translated well. (from my experience)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We have had several days sunshine here in NW Oregon. When I pulled out of the driveway today, I noticed that my Mt. Hood daffodils are about 6 to 7 inches tall and sticking up above the grass (which already needs to be cut). They are not blooming yet, but they all have big bud bulges at the tops where the flowers will be. There are a few bearded iris leaves just beginning to poke up too and the daylily leaves are 3 or four inches tall. The Mt. Hood daffodils are always the first to bloom.

I do too, Margo. They really are my favorite flowers.

Sarah | 18550 comments Second storm of the week. This one is rocking our boat quite a bit so i'm feeling pretty queasy right now. Rob just got a new job as a gardener in a school nearby with lots of grounds. It's much closer than his previous job so more spare time. It does mean he can't drop me at a train station for me to get to work. So i bought myself a car this morning. I've not had my own car for 13 years so i'm very excited.

message 465: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. Well we survived the storm. It's still eeindy and raining but nothing like yesterday and through the night. No damage to the boat thankfully. Looks like it was pretty devestating for some parts of the country. Lots of flooding. Lots of trees down. Pretty crazy. They are calling it a bomb cyclone. I've never heard that term before. It's thrr firet time I can remember tthere being amber and even red warnings for wind and rain.

message 466: by [deleted user] (new)

How exciting to have a car Sarah after such a long time of not having one!

I was thinking of you on your boat yesterday. We are in Berkshire/Surrey and the winds and rain have been crazy. Luckily for us no damage but it is very scary.

We have no heating or hot water due to our boiler going kaput Friday night. Luckily we have underfloor heating in the conservatory and an electric fire which have helped to keep us warm downstairs. Went to a friends for a shower this morning. Don't expect it fixed until mid to end of week as the part they need is hard to find.

Glad to hear it hasn't caused any damage where you are. Or at least not to you and yours. My parents live in Berkshire so I've heard all the updates from them about what it's like out that way. That sucks about your boiler. What timing! At least you have a couple of backups for heat and friends to help you out.

message 468: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So very glad you guys are okay! Just read about the storm, pretty full on!! I do wonder as you guys are working with the elements (including sea sickness) whether that protects you from a lot of things...

And give Rob our grats for the new job! And yay for new car!

message 469: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I've heard of that before, Sarah! Glad you made it through safely.

I hope they are able to locate the part and fix your boiler quickly, Anna. It's no fun being without hot water!

It is finally sunny here today. We have had several cloudy and rainy days lately and I am in need of some sunshine!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Storm Dennis is passing over here right now. It's been very windy all day, but now it's even windier and raining as well.

message 471: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I hope that storm dissipates soon!

message 472: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It has been very windy here all day, but it has kept the clouds passing over pretty quickly too, so we have had some sunshine. I went for a short walk, to soak up some sun, but I did not dress warmly enough for the wind and cold and had to quit. I got into the car and drove over to my work to get online instead of going home. It is very nice and quiet here.

Still pushing up. I think they grew an inch this weekend. I will let you know when the first ones bloom. I have a couple of clumps in the backyard of my house, but the ones in front get more sun. The neighbor's tree has grown up and shades them to0 much now. When I planted them, there was no tree to shade that area of my yard. No, fence then either, but the neighbor passed away and the people who bought the house had two barking dogs and three small boys and cut down the small hedge that separated our yards. We agreed that a fence was needed, so my room mate and I built the fence. Then, they planted the blue spruce and it is over 30 tall now. I think there have been three or four different families in that house since then. All of them with dogs. I do not have an issue with doge, just the people who keep them outside all day, to bark at every noise. I cannot even go out in my own yard without being barked at constantly. In the summer, Tim, my parrot, barks back at them or along with them, I cannot tell. He forgets to bark over the winter, when it is quieter

Having daffodils growing in your yard would be awesome. Funny how we want what we can't have - way too hot here. Barking dogs I know about. When our neighbours moved in, we thought the guy next door was yelling at his wife when he yelled "Shut up Sarah!" We have since found out that the dog's name is Sarah. Tee hee.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've seen daffodils too! Always make me happy!

I have to do a little bit of work today, and after that I have a week off. Carnival holidays :) This week there was an announcement at work that the dates of the next holiday (end of April) have been changed. I stressed out, because I already booked a holiday. Turns out we get 2 days extra, yay!

message 490: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had a birthmark removed today. About 1.5 weeks ago I was at work and it started bleeding. It seemed like I had scratched it but I couldn't remember doing that, so I called the GP and she said to better have it checked, so I went there last week. She said it didn't look like anything to worry about, but that they're always extra careful when there's bleeding so that her advice was to have it removed and checked out. She removed it with a local anasthetic and then used stitches (it wasn't huge, but large enough apparently that it needed stitches), but the anasthetic is starting to wear off now... Also, she put the birthmark in a small container and I had to drop it off at the hospital myself. That was a bit weird!

message 491: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments That's strange when they make you transport things like that yourself, Peggy. Hopefully the tests will turn out just as you expect and it will nothing.

We had a dusting of snow here yesterday. Our weather has been a little off this year. We had a dusting back in November 12th, which was really early in the season, then nothing until yesterday.

message 492: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments here we have to go to a hospital to the "day ward" to get any growths removed. I had mole removed from my groin last year and they tested it but it came back clear. they said the results usually fine, that it is a prcaution.

It must have felt strange delivering your owe tissue sample!

We also got a little dusting on the coast, but further inland they got about 4". They were forecasting up to 7" for us. Weather has been wacky this year. Everything is about a month ahead in blooming schedule.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments It is good that your doctor decided not to take chances, Peggy. Hopefully everything will be ok.

message 496: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Wishing you speedy healing Peggy. Yes I bet that was very odd taking the sample yourself. Fingers crossed it will all be fine.

We have daffodils here too. Snowdrops and crocuses too. It all seems a little too early. I guess because we've barely had a winter. Just endless storms it seems. The wind has picked up again for the weekend, although I don't think it has a name this time!

I'm off to pick up my car tomorrow. I'm very excited.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My daffodils are not blooming yet, but I have seen some dark yellow ones blooming around the neighborhood. Some early crocus and snow drops are showing up too. It really is early. We have had several more days of cold, cold sunshine though. It has been an unusually mild winter here too, but March could still give us some grief. It has happened before.

Have fun driving your car, Sarah.
