message 406: by Lynds (new)

Lynds Hi everyone!
My name is Lyndsey and I am from Australia.
I am very new to goodreads. Iv'e had an account for many years but never really explored it until tonight.
My reading genre is very board and I like anything with a good storyline or self development books. I am always up for new recommendations and expanding my horizons.
I stumbled across this group, when I was exploring the 'group' tab, thinking it would be lovely to be a part of a supportive group.
My reading goal this year is very small, 5 books. I use to love to read and would devour though lately my job has been at the forefront. I though 5 books was manageable and achievable.

I look forward to meeting you and chatting about books!

:)

I'm Talia from the US (Oregon, currently, but I've been pretty nomadic in the last few years!). I'm a huge fan of Stephen King and I'm currently participating in a challenge hosted by admins in my Constant Reader group on Facebook. The challenge is to read the Dark Tower series throughout 2020, but I'm reading ahead, as my goal is 52 books this year! Besides SK, I really enjoy an eclectic variety of genres, so I'm open to recommendations!

Hi Bryan and welcome to fiction! Can I recommend my favorite genre? Read any of the great authors from the Golden Age of science fiction - 50s - 1980. I see from your taste in reading that you like to learn. Therefore I urge you to check out the so called "hard scifi" authors. These are scientists and people with advanced educations who bring their knowledge into their books, and thus their readers learn a lot. It's an education. Like: Asimov, physicist and chemist (I, Robot, where he invented the Laws of Robotics, discussed today in robotics), Robert L. Forward, gravitation physicist and aerospace engineer (one of my top 10 - Dragon's Egg), Arthur C. Clarke, inventor and NASA advisor (The Sentinel, basis for movie - 2001 Space Odyssey), Greg Bear (Blood Music), Gregory Benford - Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of California, Irvine (Timescape), David Brin, advanced degrees in engineering and physics (the Uplift saga series). Then, though not hard scifi, but essential, is Dune, by Frank Herbert. The great classic.

As for my favorites, Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles (Ray is my favorite author), The Heechee Saga, by Frederic Pohl - starting with Gateway (changed my life), The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny - absolute jewels, and the one that started it all..blew my mind when I was 12 even though my youthful intellect understood little of it, The Wheels of If, by L. Sprague deCamp.

Science fiction educated me, sophisticated my outlook, made me flexible, open minded, curious and adventuresome. I can't recommend this genre enough.

Erin | 65 comments Hello, My name is Erin and I'm from South Carolina!
I adore classic novels, historical fiction, and non-fiction mainly, but I am always willing to try new genres! My ideal weekend is sitting by a window on a rainy day with a cup of coffee and a good book.

message 418: by .sunflower. (new)

.sunflower. | 134 comments Hey everyone!

I'm Isabella, and I live in Florida. I only joined Goodreads a few months ago, and I found this group while browsing the community.

I mainly read YA, and I particularly enjoy a good fantasy. I do want to start reading some classics though, as well as horror/thriller.

My goal for this year is 20 books because I only read a few books last year due to school and other things, and I really want to get back into reading. Right now I'm going through the books on my bookshelf, as I definitely have a habit of buying books and not reading them.

message 419: by [deleted user] (new)

- Where are you from?
I am from North Carolina.

- What kinds of books do you like to read?

I found this group under the Community/Group. I was looking at the groups that allowed me to read what I wanted and at my pace.

- What's your reading goal?
I would like to read at least 52 books this year.

alex_and_all_her_books (alex_her_books_and_the_rest) | 2 comments Hello there!

My name is Alexandra (Alex for short) and I'm from France.

I mostly read fiction, I love thrillers and psychological novels but I also read a lot of YA (Harry Potter essentially ^_^). I can also be tempted by romance when I need something "light" to read. I'm a big fan of Tolkien. Actually, I read everything (except for Erotica which is not really my thing...).

I found this group by browsing on Goodreads and I thought it would be great to be part of the adventure :)

This year, I would like to read (at least) 52 books (one a week if possible) but as I work full time and have some health problems, I don't always have time to pick up a book...

Hi Gary, how's the weather up there? I lived in Duluth many years and I dearly loved it. But life took me elsewhere. I live in Colorado now so I still get some of my beloved snow. I am joyfully retired now so I am reading like I always wanted to be able to. If I ever have any grammar questions, which I sometimes do, can I ask you? English grammar is one of my passions. I was blessed to teach English to Romanian middle school kids for 5 years...great fun.

Fenris (fenrislyulf) | 15 comments Hello! I go by Fenris and I'm in the United States. I read a variety of genres, but generally keep to fiction (especially magical realism), fantasy, science fiction and mysteries. The longer the book the better, to me. My favourite novel from the past 10 years is Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, a fantasy/historical fiction novel which was also made into a short series by the BBC. This is the second year I've joined the Goodreads Challenge, and am set to read 40 books this year. I'd read more but books are expensive, unfortunately.

I found this by just searching and clicking my way through Goodreads :)

I loveeeee a challenge! I’m always challenging myself during the day, in work, with reading. I want to read at least 100 books in 2020, but looking at my current status it will be easy. So I have to make my challenge harder :)

Love hearing about you guys!

Im Lauren from Florida. I love love love a good mystery novel. Some of my favorite books are Dark Places by Gillian Flynn and The Likeness by Tana French. (They are also two of my favorite authors) I just made my Goodreads account this year and have been trying to find more friends so I’ll see more books pop up on my newsfeed. I’m always looking for something new to read.

message 434: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 20 comments Hi Everyone! I am Nikki and I am from Pennsylvania. I love to read thrillers and mystery books, some of my favorites include Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter and The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.
For 2020 I set a personal goal of reading 15 books. I know it's not a huge number. So far this year I've read 4 books, which makes me feel confident that I will not only meet my goal, but hopefully I'll crush it.
I joined this group because I need something to help me remain consistently focused on my goal. Between work, family and just everyday chores I have the tendency to put reading on the bottom of my to do list, but it is a resolution of mine to make more time for myself this year and reading is one of my favorite "me time" activities.
Looking forward to discussing some great books this year!

message 444: by David (new)

David | 6 comments Hi I am David

I am currently in high school so I have read some books I am not a big fan of, but during my free time I tend to read romantic fiction books. If I ever get bored with those I switch into some fantasy series. I help shelf books at my school’s library, so I see what books are in the trend at least at my school.

message 445: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Stalnaker | 1 comments Hi,
My name is Lisa Stalnaker, I am from Demorest Georgia USA. I love all books, but my current favorite genre is mystery, crime thrillers. I mostly read books on a Amazon Kindle, however my BFF has gotten me into listening to Audiobooks which is fantastic for me during the day while I am taking care of my 4 month old grandson. Speaking of BFF she is also who turned me onto this group. We have known each other literally my entire life.

message 446: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everyone!
I'm Kevin, currently living in France (well, I'm French, so XD). Graduate student in Anthropology, I tend to have interests in Humanities, but literature is so much more! That being said, I can tell that I'm not picky. I really enjoy lots of writings, mostly novels and poetry (followed by short novels). Concerning the genre, well, I can't say I have a few either. I do have a lot of favorite books, and it would be hard to tell which one is THE book... I love so many of them, but maybe I can write down a few titles: "Les Fleurs du Mal," "La Peste," "Le Lion," "Animal Farm," "Harry Potter," "The Lord of the Rings" (almost everything from Tolkien actually), "Hunger Games," etc.
Anyway, it's nice to meet you!

message 447: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Dix (valeriedix) Hi, everyone! I'm Valerie from Sevierville, Tn, USA. I'm a 62 year young wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. My husband and I both are retired, so I have a lot of time to read. I love mystery/suspense novels, especially anything by Lisa Jackson and Heather Graham. I do love a good romance, historical romance that is. My authors there are Kathleen Woodwiss, Rosanne Bittner, Rebecca Brandewynde, plus many others. My challenge this year is 80. I more than exceed that last year, but, of course, it is a new year and I always start out slow. Thanks for letting me join y'all and I hope everyone has a very joyful year of reading.
