Melissa Merendino Hey everyone!

I’m Melissa and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA!!
I recently got back into reading regularly, and I love it!
I read mostly fiction and am open to try any genre!
I found the group through a friend who ultimately got me back into reading by telling me about the books he has read!
My goal for this year is 25 books, so fingers crossed ◡̈

Hi David,
Well if Mythology is a favorite, you definitely joined us at the right time :) Our theme this year is Myths, Legends & Fairytales and there is a variety of challenges to go along with that.
I'd recommend checking out the A-Z Challenge aswell as the quarterly that takes place from January through March: Myths From Around the World
And ofcourse there are a bunch others well worthwhile looking into if you enjoy challenges and discussing books with other readers :)

Have fun!

message 113: by Angel (new)

Angel Koo | 1 comments Hi, I am Angel from Seoul, South Korea. I am preparing the exam to become an English teacher for public school in Korea. And I decided to read 100 books this year to have not only knowledge but also plenty of indirect experience for life, world, love, children, and myself. As I read more books, I also have a dream to write my own children books with my own drawing and illustration. Hope that I share my thoughts and listen to various ideas from you in the world so that I could have insight that I have never had before.

I also want to make friends who can share ideas often. If you are interested in Korean culture, or Asian culture, human, philosophy, christianity, life, or spirituality, we can definately talk together with a lot of entusiasm.

Please leave me a comment.

And I support your goal this year, too!

message 114: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 1 comments Hello, I'm Sharon, from England, joining the challenge in my quest to clear my years-old TBR pile. 52 books in a year should make a dent. :)

message 115: by EmilyW (new)

EmilyW (emilylibrarian) | 4 comments Hi, everyone. My name is Emily. I live in California. I am still raising kids and I work as a librarian. I read slowly, so I often read easier things like chick lit and young adult. Lately I have read some mystery books thanks to my book club.

I found goodreads a couple years ago, but I do not remember how I did so. I have underutilized it, so I hope to learn to use it better and more frequently.

I look forward to joining you as we share our joy of reading. :-)

message 119: by Deba Jyoti (new)

Deba Jyoti Khawas (debajyoti) Hello,
I'm Deba from US (Kentucky).
For the past 4 years, I have been setting up modest reading targets, but am able to complete them.
From this group, I hope I shame myself enough to read fewer but better books.
I like Sci-fi, non-fiction and historical books a lot.

message 120: by Rose (new)

Rose | 2 comments Hello everyone! My name is Rose and I'm from Australia. As a former primary school teacher librarian my reading focus was children's books. Now that I am teaching again, I have more time to read books for grown ups! I am really excited to be taking part in this challenge at last. I have been a group member for a while but have never had time to participate. 2020 it is! I enjoy reading most genres of fiction (not a fantasy or sci-fi fan) as well as autobiographies. I am open-minded so willing to give any kind of story a go!

message 121: by Yvette (new)

Yvette (morales13795) | 20 comments - Where are you from? Hi, I'm Yvette and I'm from Laredo, TX. In enjoy reading mostly fiction books, such as mystery, YA, Science fiction.

I looked up about book challenges in the search bar. I started doing the PopSugar book challenge in 2017. I started to look for challenges to get me to read more, discover new genres, authors, etc. The challenges helped me find books and authors that have become my favorite. Unfortunately (depends on how you see it), I have bought more books then i can read for the yearly challenges. So by suggested by my sister and friends, I decided not to do this years Popsugar challenge to concentrate on the books I have now. I noticed most of them do not fit this years prompts.

So I am doing a personal challenge to read 20 books. All from my bookshelf or local library.

I would still want to find a challenge that can incorporate the books I currently have. But for now, starting on what I can.

I think it safe to admit that memoirs are definitely a favorite too. I am aiming for 30 books this year. But hoping to exceed that goal. I mostly rely on my county library to supply my books, but I also listen to books in audible from time to time.

Sarah Caine (crochetingpoweredbygin) | 124 comments I’m Sarah - I am book obsessed and have the biggest collection of books in my house I could start a library! My aim is to read as many books as I can this year and I am looking forward to trying new genres. I am from Newcastle but live just outside of Cambridge and work in London so I have a long commute everyday - plenty of time to read!! I also travel overseas for my job regularly so love to read on a plane! My favourite genre is crime and thrillers, although I am up for trying anything!! Looking forward to this challenge

message 130: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookmarks_and_dogears) | 25 comments Hi everyone! I'm Amanda and I'm from the US. I love any good book but in particular I like to read fantasy and modern fairy tales, historical fiction, and literary fiction. I also enjoy nonfiction books on leadership, communication, and psychology. My reading goal this year is 60 books, but I also want to get more involved in the Goodreads community and get better at writing reviews. It's nice to meet you all!

message 131: by Surupa (last edited Jan 04, 2020 06:33AM) (new)

Surupa Mukhopadhyay (surupam17) | 39 comments Hello! I'm Surupa and I'm from Dubai. I have been doing the Goodreads reading challenge for the last 3 years, and have absolutely been loving it! My reading goal this year is to read 24 books. I enjoy reading almost any type of book nowadays, specially after being inducted into the Goodreads community, as prior to that I only read Thrillers (still have a real soft corner for that), but in the past 3 years I've acquired a new found taste in contemporary and off the hook Business books such as An Economist Walks Into a Brothel: And Other Unexpected Places to Understand Risk (also the first book I'm reading in this new decade). Would love to follow through my goal this year, and keep up with everyone else's goals, so as to get a good idea of what's new in the Bibliophilic world, and keep myself updated with some good reads!

message 132: by Naomi (new)

Naomi | 1 comments Hi! My name is Naomi and I’m a bookworm who’s having a reading crisis.
I’m a lover of fantasy, paranormal, young adult, romance and more. To be honest I like all books except for the ones I don’t like...you get what I mean?
As for the reading crisis, I haven’t been reading as much as I do and this year I would like to change that by reading at least 60 books for the year.
I love meeting new people! So hopefully I will be around goodreads as often as I can :)

message 133: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (goodreadscomjenniferediting) | 4 comments Hi all,

Happy New Year!

My name is Jennifer and I’m from Colorado. My favorite genres are biographies and memoirs; I love learning about other people. I’ve had the same reading goal for several years, which is 40 books. I debated increasing my goal this year but decided against it. I’d like to read a couple of biographies by Ron Chernow and those are not quick reads. 🙂

I look forward to meeting you all and sharing book ideas.

Happy reading!

message 134: by Matt (new)

Matt Stanford Happy 2020 Everyone!

I'm Matt, and like some of the other newbies, I've used Goodreads primarily as a book log, but I've always wanted to find groups that fit my reading interests and background. I'm a high school teacher with a degree in engineering and also spent the first act of my life in the military.

Typically I like to read at least two books at once; a fiction book and the other a non-fiction book. I am always interested in something new, especially when it's science-related. My fiction preferences change pretty frequently; sometimes, I like dark and gritty and then need to find an upbeat story to balance out.

Thanks again for welcoming to your group, feel free to chat with me about anything.

Bienvenido Paul!
Hmm, I don't really know if I have any tips for reading faster. I think I only have tips for reading more, so sorry I can't help you out there.
However, the cliché "practice makes perfect" does come to mind. The more you read, the better you become at it.

Apart from that, I think acceptance is important. Reading shouldn't be a race. The focus should (imo) be about enjoying the read at your own pace :)

Goodluck with your goal of 12 books this year :)

Hi Marcy and welcome to the group!
That's a great goal :) I'm sure it will!
Joining this group has definitely helped me explore genres outside my comfort zone and read books I wouldn't necessarily have gravitated towards otherwise.
I hope you'll join some of the challenges throughout the year and check out the group and buddy reads.
Happy reading!

Dorthea Kemp | 2 comments Hello, Dorthea from Michigan (USA). I love sci-fi, mystery, and detective books as well as anything comic related. Dean Koontz, Patricia Cornwell, Star Trek and Star Wars are my favs. I don't usually count things I read for professional reasons. Mostly I use audible versions, but also read books from library sales and kindle sales. I am setting a goal of 20 books but hope to actually get to 50. Good luck all and reach out if you like.

I mostly read fiction books of all kinds but I also love to read classics. For 2020 I want to make it my goal to also read other genres. I found this group by accident while scrolling. My reading goal is to go trough 1 book per week.

message 143: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Welcome to the group, everyone! We are pleased to meet you all :)

Jessica (too shy to go out and socialize) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Jessica from the Philippines now living in Japan.
I'm not new in Goodreads but I made a new account to kind of renew my reading life after not reading for 3 years because I had to ban myself from the English language to study in Japan.
I love fantasy, fiction, and recently, I'm into nonfiction books. I found this group because I want to participate in group activities. I've been a solo reading journey my entire life so I've decided to join a community and make new friends who also love books. I never had a friend who read books.
My reading goal is to read at least 2 Japanese novels because I have to practice reading in Japanese and read at least 10 nonfiction books. The rest is fiction.

message 145: by El W. (new)

El W. (elysewelles) | 4 comments Good morning Baltimore! I live in Baltimore, Maryland, USA where I teach high school English. My goal this year is to read 30 books! Last year (2019) my goal was 20, and I managed 25, so here we go! I love reading because it’s traveling for free - but I also love reading because it’s great to do on and to prepare for vacation. I travel as often as I can, usually 2-3 times a year, and almost always for historical sites. I love reading historical fiction, non-fiction, and classic literature, mostly British lit, and then doing my best to see the places I read about. The most memorable experience I’ve had traveling and reading is a Jane Austen tour with my mother, seeing every place Jane grew up and lived in, and also some filming locations for series and film adaptations, across the UK for 4 weeks. We read all her novels and some supplemental non-fiction leading up to the trip that made every place we saw feel like meeting her in some way.

I also like that reading takes me places I can’t go at the moment, especially ancient times! The anthropological side of reading is my favorite, really putting myself in the shoes of people I’ll never meet, who live lives I’ll never truly relate to directly. Reading is transportive!

message 146: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jlvgriffin) | 2 comments Hi all,
I’m Jennifer, from Columbus, Ohio. I have committed to reading 24 books this year. I tend to read l/listen to historical romances, biographies, fiction, and business/self help. But am really much open to any good book.

I joined because while I love to read books, I would like to get better at discussing about them.

message 147: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 1 comments Hi! My name is Lauren and I live in Portland, Oregon. I love all sorts of books but have been getting into a lot of non-fiction lately. Though my favorite book will remain The Phantom Tollbooth forever :) I am doing some book bingo, so aiming for the blackout - 25 books!

message 149: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (beachnsnow2188) | 2 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm Sarah. =)
1) I'm from Cheyenne, Wyoming in the United States.
2) I read many different books when I was younger but as college textbooks became more important while I was in school, reading for pleasure became less of a priority. I'm exploring what I love to read for enjoyment again.
3) I was browsing through the site when I found this group. I was looking for books to get motivated to read.
4) I would like to read at least one or two new books each month.

message 150: by Aimée (new)
