SOLVED. fictional airborn contagion released on a cruise ship [s]

Male author???? Purchased paperback book around 2005. Fiction. 2 main characters. 1 is female doctor specializing in contagious diseases or viruses. The contagion is man made and is first released on a stolen cruise ship. It kills everyone on board.

If I haven't confused it with another book/movie....I think the ship was hidden from aerial viewing by a net of some kind that the characters had to climb on to sneak onto the ship. I think it might have been in a lake in an extinct volcano.

I think I have vague memories of this book. Were there killer eels in the bay the ship was anchored in? Or squid instead of eels, maybe. Heck, it could've been squid with eels in place of tentacles for all I know.

I don't remember the title at all, but my brain is suggesting James Rollins might've been the author. I just took a look at a list of his books and none of them look right, though.

In other news, if anyone knows of a book involving squid with eels in place of their tentacles, please let me know.
