Read a book that is considered a classic from a country not your own

Each country has books that are considered classic literature, books that should be required reading for all of their citizens.

Some suggestions:

Twenty Love Poems and Songs of Despair by Pablo Neruda (Chile)
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Colombia)
Coming to Birth by Marjorie Oludhe MacGoye (Kenya)
Romance of Three Kingdoms – Luo Guanzhong (Ming Dynasty China)

I read the satire Candide by Voltaire. I was reminded at times of Wesward Ho by Charles Kingsley, The Gold Eaters by Ronald Wright, The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni, and Utopia by Thomas More.

For this I read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. It was an interesting story but I don't think I'd suggest it to my friends. (besides the ones that had to read it because I selected this for our book club!)
