ABANDONED. Fiction, English colonial administrators on a desert island in the ?1930s, rich friend visits

Hi,

I've been trying to remember the name of a book I read probably a decade ago. It's set in an English colony that's a remote island in the South Pacific (or at least that's what is implied). A well off friend of some of the expats comes to visit and falls in love. In my mind she is called Veronica but I may be making that bit up! She flies in from the UK and the journey takes several days, but I don't remember any mention of war so I am guessing it is set in the '30s. I don't remember a huge amount more about it. But I've been trying to remember the title for months and it is driving me slightly mad.
