I don't get the end!

*SPOILER ALERT*
I love Diana Wynne Jones books. Great characters, very imaginative and clever - but sometimes too clever for me! I don't understand the end of this book. What Thought did Ceri put on Gai? The idea he wouldn't come back? The idea to offer himself as the sacrifice? Those would be very risky thoughts to put on his own brother. Or the happy feeling he had at the end? If the last, why is Gai surprised it goes on and on? Doesn't the logic of the story suggest Gai should be happy because he has discovered his gifts and discovered that his father is proud of him after all?
