I think for this one I'm going to give The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera a whirl. It's set in Czechoslovokia which is, as of 1993, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
I read Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, set in Czechoslovakia, now Czechia. I will have to find some commentary on the book to really gain a better understanding.
