Teodora | 359 comments I honestly felt like ACOMAF was one of Maas's masterpieces, but not in the ploty-twisty, art-of-war kind of way. It was something that somehow went feeling-to-feeling. It's definitely the best book of the series!

Laura, she really does! But she does it well!

Finished Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran was a good historical fiction

Yeah SJM definitely has a type for her characters. That comes through into her new book as well but not quite as much. Hope you continue to enjoy it.

Out of my crazy list of series to finish I picked out the Top 15 series I hope to be caught up on/finished by the end of the year:
A Court of Thorns and Roses - 1/4
Arc of a Scythe - 2/3
Caraval - 2/3
Empress Theodora - 1/2
Fever - 7/10
InCryptid - 3/9
Kate Daniels - 6/10
Mercy Thompson - 9/12
Montague Siblings - 1/3
Mortal Instruments - 4/6
Night Huntress - 4/7
October Daye - 10/14
The Folk of the Air - 1/3
The Guild Codex Universe 4/12
The Storymakers - 2/3

.... Wish me luck on it! I won't get through all of them (that's like 44 books) but it would be nice to get caught up on half! Or at least all the short ones

message 155: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments Good luck! I am sure you'll going to conquer at least half of them!

message 156: by Anna (new)

Anna | 36 comments You totally got this, Britt. I’m with you on Kate Daniels and Mercy.

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Let's do it Anna! I still don't own the next KD so not sure when I can get back to it.
Where are you at in Mercy again? I have Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4) by Patricia Briggs to read and then Silence Fallen (Mercy Thompson, #10) by Patricia Briggs

message 158: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Would you guys recommend Mercy and KD? Which of the two do you prefer? I've been meaning to pick up either for ages but there's so many of them it's a bit daunting!

I love them both. I used to be caught up in Mercy but I dont typically buy new releases ( don't really like hardcover books).
While they are both UF with strong female characters they are quite different from one another. KD is more badass but I probably prefer Mercy. She has always felt super real to me. And I love her relationships with people. I highly recommend using the recommended reading order. Here starting at year 0. Only novella that is necessary is Alpha and Omega 0.5 as it really sets up Anna. You can read the first 3 Mercy books without starting A&O if you want but after that they do have tie ins that make both series better when read together in order.

Also the original KD series is finished at 9 books with some spin offs coming while Mercy and A&O are still ongoing.

Have you read any Illona Andrews books?

Thanks!

No I haven’t read any Ilona Andrews yet!

If you want to start with something small (and absolutely fantastic) try Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #1) by Ilona Andrews Its written as a free serial originally and then edited and put out like this a while after. Such a neat world! Quick, easy reads with fantastic characters. One of the most interesting takes on werewolves and vampires. And the first 3 are on in a bundle for .99 The Innkeeper Chronicles, Volume 1 (Innkeeper Chronicles #1-3) by Ilona Andrews

message 162: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll definitely check it out

Anna | 36 comments I second the Inkeeper series. It’s very good!

message 165: by Anna (last edited Apr 17, 2020 12:57PM) (new)

Anna | 36 comments Ok, Britt! Let’s see...I still need to read Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews for KD. I left off with Fire Touched (Mercy Thompson, #9) by Patricia Briggs for Mercy. I think I am behind you on those. I’ll have to request them from the library.

Hi Laura! I would agree with Britt. I like Mercy’s books a bit more. I find her character to be more relatable/personal/believable. She’s very vulnerable, yet strong. I’d also strongly suggest reading the short novella Alpha & Omega (Alpha & Omega, #0.5) by Patricia Briggs either first or second because of the background information. It can usually be found by itself or in the On the Prowl (Alpha & Omega, #0.5) by Patricia Briggs anthology.

So you are 1 behind me on both. After you are done that one for Mercy we should buddy read the next one! I need to read Dead Heat from A&O first though have you read it?

I finished A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and while I mostly enjoyed it there were things that bothered me. Too many similarities in her characters across series!
I started listening to Noughts & Crosses (Noughts & Crosses, #1) by Malorie Blackman and enjoying it so far

Also had to return The Toll (Arc of a Scythe, #3) by Neal Shusterman to the library so I am back on hold for that. Reading Coraline by Neil Gaiman now instead

Listened to Noughts & Crosses (Noughts & Crosses, #1) by Malorie Blackman was a good book that was recommended to me by Jo. I'll likely listen on in the series at some point

Oh my god Noughts and Crosses killed me when I read it!! I read that book when I was 15 and the ending destroyed me so much I have never picked up another book by that author again. I’m not joking I was crying for about an hour afterwards. I still remember it vividly 13 years later!

I need to watch the tv show that’s been made of it.

I was 11, and honestly, I've been crushed by a lot of book endings, but that one still sticks out! The TV show is pretty good, though very different from the book (and obviously I thought the book was better)!

There's a TV show?! I knew nothing of this book until Jo recommended it to me. I didn't cry though but was saddened.
Heather, the narration is good. I liked the male narrator better but they are both good. Easy to listen to.

Yeah, just came out this year! It's on the BBC in the UK, I don't know when or if it will be available in other countries though, since it's still fairly new.

I never continued with the Noughts and Crosses series either Britt. I loved the book but it totally broke me (I was only 16 or something when I read it) and I never felt the need to continue the series.

message 197: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments Six years! Wow that's quite some time! How does it feel to be back to a series after all that time?

message 198: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Pretty good actually! I got a push from a friend in another group and glad I finally went back. Was easier to follow than I expected. I appreciated the one page recap to start the book.

message 199: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments Oh with the recap I think it was way easier. I have recently started the second book of the Everless duology and I honestly forgot most of the things that happened in the first book and so it is a bit complicated for me to get into this one now. But I am glad you finally went back to this series. That was a hell of a push from your friend 😂

Oh yeah, that one page quick refresh definitely helped! Now see if I read the next one anytime soon lol
