I read this last year with the group, but didn't go past the first book. I got extremely busy and while I liked this, I wasn't compelled to keep going. The Netflix show changed my mind. I started watching it Friday and I'm thru 5/8 episodes so far.
I compulsively started reading this again for refresher, and to compare to the show.
TV Show: (view spoiler)
I also read it a couple of years ago and didn't make it past the first book. I actually read it on audio and really didn't enjoy it.
This time around, I started reading on the 21st and actually stayed up late last night to finish it!
I am going to start watching the TV show after reading The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny. I heard there are episodes based on stories from both books.

I've read up to 'A Grain of Truth' and I'm really enjoying it so far. I love the atmosphere of the stories, they have a mythical and fairytale feel to them. I'm reading the greek translation and I find it very interesting. The translator chooses to use old-fashioned/traditional/difficult words, to a degree that I need to look up words in my native tongue very often. Sometimes it feels pretentious; in many cases he could use a more common word and it looks like he looked up for synonyms and used the most uncommon one he could find. But, in general, I'm really digging it. It reads like a traditional fairy tale. How do you find the english translation? As for the stories themselves, I love the format and I can already see why some people prefer the collections over the novels. I like how curses are part of the world and I think it fits that we don't know (yet?) exactly how magic works.
As for the Netflix show, i've watched the first 5 episodes and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm a bit sceptical about the timeline, which is mixed up, and also, about the way the worldbuilding is presented, which I find a bit all over the place. Some CGI could be done better, but there are also some stunning sceneries, as well.
I'm read up through "The Lesser Evil". The English translation seems good, but it's hard to say for sure since I can't read the original Polish lol. I do get the fairytale vibe though, which these are heavily based on. I think of it as a (view spoiler)
The English translation doesn't use very many difficult words, but like Chris mentioned, it would be interesting to know what type of prose the original Polish version contains and see if the English has been simplified, or if the Greek has been made more difficult.
I caved and started watching the TV show even though I am not done Sword of Destiny yet. Episodes 1-5 are all based on The Last Wish, but based on the synopsis, episode 6 seems to be from Sword of Destiny. I'm going to try to wait until finishing Sword of Destiny before continuing the show.
I was/am actually a newbie to this whole series, but since finding out about it, I am wanting to read the stories maybe as I watch the show?? Be a critic in my comparing and contrast ways... It has been pushed up on my TBR list for sure! Plus, who doesn't love Henry Cavill!!??

I really like Henry Cavill as Geralt. :)

Hi Peggy! If a thread is already created, you don't need to sign up for a buddy read. Just pop in, comment that you'll read along too and comment as you read. Just make sure that anything that might spoil the story (however small) is marked with spoiler tags. You can see how to do that by looking in (some html is ok) at the top of comment box on the right.
It should look like this < s p o i l e r > I can't believe (character) did (blah blah blah)!! < / s p o i l e r > but with no spaces between the spoiler code.
Then it will look like this:

We started the read a week or two ago, but we're all still around so feel free to join this read. :)
Hello, are you planning to continue with the other books in the series? I have exams at the moment so I might catch up by the time you start the next book? :)
I just finished this book two days ago and quite liked it.A review full of personal biases: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It's interesting that I really don't think it's particularly grimdark. Dark yes- but there's too much humor in it for the grim.
sorry to ask but I really cant figure out which book to start with there is too much different options
Peggy wrote: "sorry to ask but I really cant figure out which book to start with there is too much different options"This seems to be the recommended order:
The Last Wish
Sword of Destiny
Blood of Elves
The Time of Contempt
Baptism of Fire
The Tower of the Swallow
The Lady of the Lake
Season of Storms
We just wrapped up The Last Wish here. Some might not be finished yet. We haven't set up a date for Sword of Destiny yet.
Chris wrote: "We just wrapped up The Last Wish here. Some might not be finished yet. We haven't set up a date for Sword of Destiny yet."which means I can still catch up. I have too many books on me rn. I did the mistake of starting too many of them and need time to finish few before starting last wish...
I finished The Last Wish a couple of days ago and would love to join you guys if you continue! :D When do you plan on starting Sword of Destiny?
Sooo I'm finally starting this one ^~^ I absolutely loved the first story about Foltest and his daughter. It's just such a unique tale (view spoiler)I also really appreciated this tale in how proved Geralt isn't invincible. He got pretty banged up in that crypt despite all of his skills and magics. He mostly had to rely on his cunning to finish the job. lol. But having a character like this just seems real to me, yah know? There are so many characters in books nowadays who just survive anything. So it's good to read tales like these ~
I loved how the tale of "A Grain of Truth" reminded me so much of a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. We get these classic fairy tale themes but with a twist. <3 Plus (view spoiler)And yet again, another story of the witcher trying to understand these 'monsters' before settling things with a blade. Love~
Finished up "A Question of Price" and really enjoyed it. I think they treated it well in the Netflix show too. Question though...in this the Queen was trying to set up the marriage with the Skellige...but weren't they trying for Nilfgaard in the show? Also, just have to say I love the characters Calanthe and Renfri <3
Finally finished "The Last Wish"~ I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Through it I got a better sense of the characters in this massive world. It's also interesting how the author had these little in between shorts called ' The Voice of Reason' to show inner reflections or moreso the decision of Geralt to turn towards his destiny.
"The Last Wish" chapter was definitely the longest. I mean being the name of the book and all it should be. While I loved the story immensely I still don't like Yen. lol (view spoiler)
